I believe this is worthy of its own thread rather than being drowned out in other Cyberpunk threads, as it already was in the OT yesterday.

For context, the GameSpot and Polygon reviews, written by Kallie Plagge and Carolyn Petit respectively, both shine a spotlight on the representation and transphobic issues in the game. Kallie's review has especially gotten a lot of attention simply due to having a numerical score that isn't a 9 but Carolyn's review has also led to grotesque harassment.

I will not be linking to the social media posts specifically, at least one of which has now been deleted because of the harassment, but will instead copy and paste just a few of the comments.

lmao, you should lose your job.

Luckily for us your reviews don't have the intended influence. You'll be just another statistic within a year so until then keep masturbating to tranny porn and writing reviews about chicks with dicks. Your pronoun is "he". You're welcome.

Lying, useless, daft b#%%%. People like you should be banned from games. Period. Sexist piece of #$%%

You should really just die...

Just because I'm a heterosexual white male does not mean I hate you, nor does he. You SJW types seriously cannot stand anyone who doesn't align with your beliefs.

I can't believe they let a random dude write articles that just complain about irrelevant shit in a VIDEO GAME.

your cp review is filth. mental illness.

This is only the smallest fraction of what these women (and I'm sure other reviewers who have commented on the game's blatant issues) are seeing.

I'm sure some will argue that giving these sexist, transphobic assholes any sort of "spotlight" is the wrong thing to do. That is wrong. One of the biggest problems is that too many are ignoring this and simply hoping it goes away. This is a very deep issue in the gaming community.

There is first the obvious issue of social media companies doing absolutely nothing to stop this. Twitter and Instagram do not care. Reporting these posts, in many cases, does absolutely nothing.

The other is that this is overall being ignored by most of the industry. Even some of the more respected critics, websites and YouTube channels are barely touching on the issues in the game in their reviews/impressions and on top of that, they are completely quiet about the treatment that their colleagues are receiving for daring to poke the bigoted hive by laying out facts about the representation issues and transphobic content within the game.

Something needs to change.

I am a life-long passionate gamer and nothing has upset me as much as seriously as these bozos take their hobby...
It's disturbing how easy it is to (funny enough) trigger these assholes because someone isn't as in love with their toy as they are.

Not sure how you can't see yourself as the bad guy in these situations and 100% the problem with modern social media.

Threads, including death threads have unfortunately became a standard thing for games journalists. You report on a patch? Death threats. You give a big game a score below a 9? Death threads. You do anything? Death threads. It's disgusting.

I knew this would happen. Poor women. Hopefully they can ignore it, but I know it's easier said than done.

Crazy that today it requires courage to not post a 9 on an incredibly hyped game.

Imagine being upset that someone you don't know doesn't like a video game that you haven't played.

Now imagine being so upset at that person you don't know that you do this.

Snowflake losers.

Our hobby is toxic as fuck and its on all of us to call it out. CDPR needs to say something as well. This has to stop, and social media platforms need to do something to help end it.

Allowing toxic Youtubers to sick their followers on individuals has to stop. Hate-speech and threats need to lead to bans from platforms. Private facebook groups designed to doxx or harrass people need to be deleted.

If Era with an all volunteer staff can do it fucking billion dollar companies can.

Yep gamers suck, on top of that I think review scores just need to be done with all together. The CD people pretty much have been pushing this game to be a 90 or whatever at the cost of their developers. People really really need to stop worrying about scores so much as is a game worth their time or not and it's def not the last or first game where these jackass gatekeepers go after women but if men had a similar review(and some have) they don't attack them.

That's the type CDPR has been proudly encouraging for months.

So embarassing, infuriating and deeply disgusting. We need so much better moderation and zero tolerance for...whatever we should call this pathetic group of people.

They aren't welcome, should never feel that way.

Kind of expected, unfortunately. I immediately feared for the Gamespot reviewer after I saw her 7. She also got harassed for her TLoU Pt. II review (she gave it an 8).

It's sad to see that a large amount of the community of something I love deeply are garbage human beings.

Youtube already started recommending me reactions from chuds about the Gamespot review, and the only thing I watched this week about the game is Mad Queen review of it.

For the love of God. CDPR should say something about this, especially given all the shit they've allowed to fester throughout the marketing campaign for this but I won't hold my breath.

These fucks need to be publicly denounced.

Unfortunately nothing new when it comes to game reviews (or, hell, any kind of opinion about anything on the internet). If this is you stop being a nob.

As I was watching the Gamespot roundtable review thing with Kallie I was legit nervous for her... Could already see the tsunami of the imminent harassment. Like I really hope she's got a good support system and that she knows better than to read twitter and/or YT comments. And CDPR should definitely chime in on this too. This needs defusing.

What a bunch of losers. Just imagine a professional reviewer giving a 7 to a game that is beyond buggy ... Even without the transphobic content this game should review way lower in it's current state.

That's another issue. CDPR could absolutely make a statement here. They are aware this is happening. But they haven't because they simply do not care.

It is sad that this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
Also if you are gonna attack low scores then attack everyone, not just the women. These people aren't even trying to hide their misogynistic motives.

Probably worth noting that CDPR has been targeting the capital-g "Gamer" crowd for years now. Not to say these are the specific people they're going after, but they're at least in the Venn diagram.

This is disgusting but ultimately unsurprising. It fucking sucks.

"We want ethics in games journalism!!!!"

-serious reviewer gives review score lower than gamers want-

"HOW DARE YOU GIVE THIS GAME I LIKE AND HAVEN'T PLAYED A SCORE LOWER THAN WHAT I WANT?!?!"

Reminds me of what happened to jim sterling and botw.

a lot of young inmature gamers out there.

also, i don't think they're been attacked beacuse they're women, like the thread title seems to imply- but because they dared didn't like -a lot- a game.

Gaming in general has an issue with toxic discourses, people don't react well to reviews, and CDP went out of its way to cultivate a particular audience.
No shit this happens.

CDPR worked hard to cultivate this so it's not surprising as much as it is impossibly depressing.
