Since it's out of early access I'll give this a shot when my budget let's me get a game but I just have one question:

Does this mean there's time traveling children? The time traveling children of Awakening were the worst part of that game IMO.

No, there's no time traveling children. Rather if you were the kind of player who agonized about stats and inheritances in Fire Emblem then the customization in Troubleshooters will scratch much of the same itch.

Damn op, next time I get some extra disposable income I guess I have to get a PC. You always have these great refs but 95% of the time it's PC only. And the 5% of the time it is on console your usually right, and this looks right up my alley and way better than X-Com.

Is it fucking brutal, though?

Does all the building and using stuff MATTER, or i'm just gonna rotflstomp things anyway?

I first put this on my wishlist a few months ago, but because of the sale and the extra free time I'm going to get this and jump right in. It looks great, and I love lots of numbers and systems in my games.

God the hand drawn art they use in the little interludes is so fucking good. I'm taking screenshots and making desktop wallpapers out of it as I play.

LOL, WTF?!

Fist-bumb.

Well the good news is 99% of my recommendations can run on a potato PC as I'm primarily into indies.

Some may trickle down but most can run on your grandma's Dell. :p
I know that's why I said it as realistic, a couple times a year I pick up a favor for a friend odd job or two that I can handle that doesn't screw with my disability so next time I do I will probably pick up a refurbished tower I can plug into my gaming setup. It's worth it to me since your one of the 2 or 3 game people who's opinions and taste usually work for me, and you have a nose for picking up the stuff that slips through the cracks.

Done derailing the thread now.

The difficulty is very modular, but overall if you play on high difficulty yes it does. The story missions are mostly hard in a spikey sort of way; enemies will actually have their own builds and at certain points when the enemy builds upgrade the difficulty spikes significantly. Also there's optional missions that you can play in "Challenge Mode" which basically ups the rewards but level ups all the enemies and gives them a bunch of new abilities, and even super-hard optional maps that really require build optimization.

I hear you.

Most everything I 'discover' is thanks to someone else that has already done the footwork and risen the gems to the surface.

It certainly ain't me, but rather those I follow online that bring these unearthed treasures forward. SplatterCat, Nookrium, and Tomato and many more as I noted in another thread.

I'll keep an eye out for any recs from them too then.

Thanks.

NP.

Games that no one talks about thrill me more than anything.

EDIT:

And just to give credit where credit's due, thank you Austin Walker for hipping me to this one.

Should i get This game or another Xcom like Mutant Year Zero?

This is better than Mutant Year Zero, and I like that game.

Think so too, and I think it isn't even that close even though MYZ is also a good game. This game deserves way more recognition. It has some rough parts like the translation, but the devs seem intent on improving it and are constantly patching the game.

I'm like ten hours in, and the mission variety--and how it interweaves with the story--is astounding. Every story mission has been utterly unique, with some big surprises along the way. The "Jigsaw" mission (IIRC) is the best early showcase of its brilliance.

I also utterly love the way the mechanics tie into the worldbuilding. Things like character levels, masteries, and even their items tell a story.; it's brilliantly done.

This seems like a real gem of a game so far. If it keeps this up I think it easily ranks as one of the best SRPGs ever.

Hella + this thread sold me on this game and I'm only like 2 hours in but I'm super impressed already. Even at this early point it feels really unique despite looking like XCom, and it's wild reading about how much MORE it becomes later. The art and design is also super impressive. The character portraits look great and the art they use for scene transitions are wonderful. The translation is mixed but they focused where it counts I think - the story writing has been totally solid so far and most of the jank is saved for system and tutorial stuff which you can figure out even with the clunky translation. I also just love seeing how passionate the dev team seems to be. Comes through both in the game itself and how they conduct themselves on the Steam forum.

Finally beat this, thanks OP.
115H of Cruel difficulty, loved every second of it.
Working on builds and then watching it work in battle, the feeling is incredible.
I made some very op shit if anyone is interested send me a PM.

There's even a pokemon aspect to this game, having your own dragon is unreal.

I'm maybe halfway through the game and still bowled over by how well it functions as a tactics game. In spite of everything going on, you can create builds that feel indestructible, only to be cut down by some new twist the enemies throw at you--causing you to go back to the drawing board with some new, better mastery combinations that let you continue things once again.

Troubleshooter is a masterpiece of design. There's just no other way about it. They put so many mechanics in and somehow manage to make everything work flawlessly.

Game of the year, right here. And a lot more.

This game is mind-meltingly good. For the first like 10 hours I was going "hey this game is really good!" and then my brain broke and now I can't stop thinking about builds every waking moment of my day. I think unlocking class changes was what did it. It's almost incomprehensible how well the many, deep systems work together in this thing.

Quick shout out to Aaron D.. After you mentioned the game in the "GOTY so far" thread i initially put it on my wishlist but then bought it anyway. Already played over 20hrs in the last 2-3 days and i really love it. This is definitely going to be on my Top 10 this year. Thanks again for sharing, would've probably missed it otherwise.

This closer to Chimera, or Xcom2/wotc? Because honestly, I actually hate how much of a slog Xcom2 is after playing CS. Running around big maps trying to find the very last group of spawns, etc etc

To be absolutely fair it's worse than Xcom 2 in this regard. Maps aren't much bigger but they are much more populated, and you have alot more units that you can control and give commands to, and hell there's often more to do per individual turn. It's mitigated with options that let you play out animations ludicrously fast but there comes a point later in the game where you've clearly won and there's like 20-30 minutes of mop up work and hunting for the last pod.

Turns out Troubleshooter has a Steam Greenlight page.

Steam Community :: Error

From way back in 2016! It has a lot of old, in-development screenshots that are cool to see. Looks familiar, but VERY different from the final product.

They also pitch it as 'XCOM x a JRPG' which surprises me, because it really does remind me of something like Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics more; I would've sworn that's what the devs were going for out of the gate.

It has dynamic battle music that changes depending on the intensity of the fight, like XCOM.

You might be able to change the specific songs playing from the music player you unlock, but I haven't messed with it to confirm.

I've been playing a bunch of this lately and it's incredible. It's a game that layers systems upon systems all in the mold of a XCOM tactics game, yet never buckles under its own weight somehow. It's insane how much you can customize and tweak, yet it doesn't feel broken. I have no idea how they pulled it off, but this game is incredible. It's only getting better as I play more. This game deserves way more attention.

I was just wondering if they're even planning on re-translating it later on myself. Downloaded the game yesterday and while it was pretty intriguing indeed, I have to say the current translation did end up bothering me a bit too much, especially since the game seems extremely complicated when it comes to the variety of systems in play, and it was all the non-narrative stuff that was particularly wonky.

Am I parsing these patch notes right in that they're saying human bosses now have more unique mastery builds? That's pretty cool, if so.

The devs have a "translation" section of the Steam forums where they ask questions about how to fix things up and accept feedback on the translation so I think we'll probably see it continually cleaned up. It may take a while though, because there's A LOT of text in the game.

I would encourage you to stick with it, though. The game is easier to get a handle on than it seems at first, as while the translation can be clunky you'll get a pretty good feel for it through playing, and on Normal the game's forgiving enough you're not gonna be punished for not immediately grasping everything.

I'm about 4 or 5 missions in (I have 2 characters in my company), and this seems pretty good so far. Early missions do give you a pretty good chance to check out characters from outside your company, so I can sort of project what later missions might be like. So far (playing on normal), it isn't challenging enough to force me to dig into the complex masteries and what not, but I also feel like I'm kind of still in tutorial mode a little?

I'm playing on hard and felt the same early on; it starts pretty easy--I think partly to get you used to how to play--and partly because enemies also have very basic masteries and abilities. The biggest challenge early on is just positioning, and not getting overwhelmed. As you fight new enemies it will get a lot harder and you'll need to really specialise your crew to succeed.

And honestly, you're kinda always in some form of tutorial from what I've seen--every chapter introduces new stuff. I'm in chapter five or six (70 hours in) and still being introduced to entirely new systems.
Am I parsing these patch notes right in that they're saying human bosses now have more unique mastery builds? That's pretty cool, if so.
Yeah, that's what it says. They reduced their stats slightly and gave them mastery sets, from the sounds of it. I'm not sure if it was all human enemies, or just the ones listed farther down.

Some wanted men can be quite fearsome, so I'm curious to see what they look like now.
