The main reason why almost every game doesn't show characters lying under the covers or changing clothes is because it's a significant amount of animation and modelling work for something that you're only going to see for a few seconds; so it's not really worth the time and money to make.

It's how you save the game and change time of the day in skyward sword

Poor Link's back... must be killing him with a bed that stiff!

On that matter, I loved how you could just jump into literally anyone's bed that you saw, as if you owned the place; Hilarious!

If I had to pick one single worst scene it'd probably be in Ao though. The one that introduces certain someone's little sister who admitteldy ends to be a decent to good character overall, but same could be said for CS characters too IMO. Easily the worst introducing scene in the series when it comes to egregious mood-breaking fanservice.
Indeed. But it's quickly forgotten compared to the dozens of mediocre cliche scenes in Sen.

People sleep. Who knew?

Western games have it too. Shit, half the fun of playing a Thief or Assassin in Elder Scrolls is waiting for people to crawl into bed so you can put an arrow in their sleeping face with a sneak damage modifier. Also uh, pickpocket success goes up.
Jesus 5 pages and people still aren't reading the op, just jumping to the defence of Japan.

Anime/Japan fanboys will defend everything coming from the country regardless of context. In fact, the more context they can ignore, the better.
Even if there's not even an attack. Anime fanboy gotta fanboy.

TBH, I'm more bothered by KEEPING SHOES ON. But then, can't remove them from the model. It just looks so awkward.
[Desperately trying not to comment on the SAO thing, because creep overload]

I'm more bothered about the 'incest-y' trope japanese media has. Like what the flying fuck

Go and have a look at the front page of something like Pornhub. I agree with the "WTF", its weird as fuck, but it definitely isn't just popular in Japan.

That works both ways, for every "fanboy" (which I dont think is a useful term to be honest) mindlessly defending Japanese media you have someone dismissing it without context because "Japan" or "Its too anime".

Yeah I get the fetish on porn site but the difference outside Japan is that it doesn't permeates to other common media like Movies, Tv show etc. And if it does it feels like a taboo which it is, blood related or no. In Japan it's kinda accepted in a way? It's a common trope in anime, manga, and games. Like example the SAO above, the Elise crushing on Rean on Trails of Cold steel, those weird ecchi moments on most animes.

Thanks for the warning. Once upon a time I would've played those or at least tried to. Not anymore.

DQXI has shown me how a JRPG with anime influence can be done right without the more egregious tropes like the ones discussed here from Cold Steel. I also have no patience for crap like those Tsundere shenanigans.

I have to say that having played those games (CS I & II) is it really not that bad, they use some of those tropes and somewhat subvert them by having the characters discuss what happened pretty early in the story becoming a non issue later

Monster Hunter is kind of funny in this regard, because there's no possible way these people can sleep in some armor sets, especially with how they throw themselves onto the bed lol. Like you can have spikes jutting out all over the place and your hunter just jumps right on.

Im not animator so i dont know, but it kinda looks simple. You just have to move the blanket and get up to the bed and pull it to cover the body.

Back in the SNES-days, Seiken Densetu 3 was a neat exception to your rule. All characters actually had sleep-sprites, which you could see if you used an emulator and turned off one of the foreground layers. (as shown below)

Was hoping someone would post this or else I was gonna do it, bravo! My perverted 12 year old self felt really proud of himself when he figured out the foreground layer thing and could see Angela nekkid.

To answer OP's question, this isn't just in Japanese games but in RPGs in general. It's probably an ode to tabletop RPGs where inns were seen as a place of safety and resting was a way to recover health. In D&D you still need to take a "long rest" (6-8) hours in order to fully recover HP and remove certain status effects, and the safest place to do that is at an inn.

The Quest for Glory series (old Western PC RPG/adventures) also featured nice screens where the main hero character went to bed at inns.

Yeah, its one of those weird tropes that's weirdly common.

As for the SAO talk, that's not even the worst thing to come from the series. 16.5 is one of the most embarrising sex scenes to come out of a series so high profile. It's lucky fate exists so it can't take 1st.

What are you talking about? With prose as wonderful as "Two years worth of semen made a glopping noise as it flowed endlessly into Asuna. Every time my penis twitched, fireworks would go off in my head." I cant possibly see someone seeing this as anything other than a masterpiece!

In Wario Land 2 sleeping like a log reveals a new series of levels. In Atelier Totori, if I remember correctly, you get the bad ending if you sleep for the entire prologue. In Pokemon Sun/Moon you can sniff beds and describe how you feel about them. Beds can be quite important in videogames, yeah.

Final Fantasy VIII has multiple scenes with squall waking up in bed or attempting to sleep all while fully clothed on top of the covers.

The hottest part was when it started getting painful and not in a BDSM kind of way so much as the main character kind of just being an asshole.

Pokemon characters can get in and out of bed, full clothed, in the blink of an eye simply by walking left or right over the bed. They don't even need to save when they do it! (doesn't work in 3D)

I love the Legend of Heroes. I hate Cold Steel. The creepy shit starts earlier in the series if you're really paying attention though but the bed shit in Cold Steel 1 really soured my first playthrough lol

giphy.gif

... you know, I was thinking about starting the Trails series pretty soon and then going to Cold Steel.

I think I'll try to play those Crossbell games after the Sky games, because I don't think I'm mentally prepared for Cold Steel if that kind of shit happens on the regular

People grossly overreact to this gif.
Millium is just a hyperactive there's nothing sexual about this scene.

Trails of Cold Steel I & II are great games with some dumb tropes but if you can't handle games having weak moments then I don't know how you play anything.

She nearly sits on his face while wearing a school girl outfit.

You don't exactly find that in most games, so it's pretty easy to play a lot of stuff.

Wait are these 2 excerpts from official SAO content? lmao
Sort of. It was written by the creator of the franchise, but they seemed to be somewhat ashmed of the fact, so they tried to hide behind a pen name and put it out as a "official fan fiction" and was published. He apparently wasn't toi ashamed as he's made couple of others like this. My favorite is the one where a character has sex with Kirito. Then wakes up thinking it was alll a dream, but realized they were filled with cum and that she'd had sex with him while asleep.

What's up with the main character oversleeping in his introduction. Is it supposed to make him/her aloof and charming?

Chronos-mom.jpg

that and it's a call back to Horii's other MC's in Dragon Quest. Lots of them start off with a main character that oversleeps. It's supposed to sort of establish that these are unassuming, normal kids having to fulfill these huge destinies.
