I'm incredibly dissapointed that a big company like Sony decided to give a trailer like that spotlight. It's one thing to have a game with those elements but not actually present in a trailer.

It's another that makes those elements one of the primary focuses.
I was surprised they actually showed it in the event. Did they not actually watch the trailer or something?

So awful and so out of place.

Freya's updated design and the newly introduced Angrboda are looking great on the God of War: Ragnarok front.

ezgif-7-aff0178faf42.gif

This one stood out the most and the devs knew what they were doing with those angles.

The only reason I can (mostly!) tolerate these types of camera angles from the Bayonetta games is that Bayonetta herself is generally self aware and playing to the camera. Urghhh.

Project Eve really looks like a non-ironic Bayonetta.

Yep, lol.

Fortunately in the PC version you should be able to replace her with Paddington Bear or something

How dare! Paddington would never!

Yes! Loving Frey's design.

Frey looks amazing.
I love that she is from our world too.

We barely get any black girl protagonist in japanese RPG games and I can only imagine how cool it is for black women who grew up playing JRPGs to finally see someone who represents them in such a game.

"a mother fucking dragon" so cool

Really looking forward to the game.

I find it extremely telling that in the Eve thread posters are telling us to look past the character design and camera focus...

And in the Forspoken people are telling us it looks/sounds cringe and they muted the trailer.

🤔🤔🤔

People excusing sexist character because horniness/fun gameplay.

People dismissing character because not sexy enough/talking too much for their liking and therefore ignoring what looks to be a fun game

The same people?

I personally dislike the character design in the former, and haven't bothered to check its thread because it looks like "we already have Bayonetta at home". On the other hand I love Frey's design, yet still find the dialogue to be cringe inducing (although to be fair, it might not be representative for the writing in the full game). It seems to be a trend in many games these days, to keep the protagonist talking at all times no matter how little it adds to the game or how stupid it sounds (Guardians of the Galaxy also seems to do this, for example).

When we'll play the game and get to know that she's a sex doll that rebelled agains her owners we will Feel Ashamed of Our Words & Deeds™
lol it wouldn't surprise me if they tried something like this.

It seems to be trying to ape Nier which as most people who played it know isn't shy about using excuses as ways to justify sexualization so maybe they have it as a plot point or something in this one.

I'm not surprised about how the threads for Project Eve and Forsaken have gone, I still remember how they reacted to the Saints Row Reboot and Battlefield 5 and the numerous other examples over the years. They'll always argue it's not the non-sexualisedfemale characters that aren't designed for them aren't the problem, it's that it's too "basic" "generic" or "historically inaccurate " but it's too common a pattern at this point to believe that

Yeah that sounds weird.

I personally don't understand what is wrong with Forspoken's dialog. It sounds ok. Reminds me of Mr Robot at some points with some Primal (the PS2 game) here and there.

I know the vagina-seam and "metal legs as latex" have gotten all the attention, but what stood out to me on that Project Eve design is that her top is reminiscent of the Japanese school girl sailor suit.

Which is A) a completely intentional reference on their part and B) fucking YIKES based on every other part of that design.

That used to be bad but now it's hopelessly quaint in the face of weebs going "if you hate sexual harassment jokes it's because you hate Japanese culture."

I mean it's just a vagina. You didn't say anything when Snake had his tight ass for everyone to see.

I think this is a bit of a stretch.

Personally, I'm really happy Forspoken exists - it's clearly made for an audience that rarely has games made with them in mind at all, and that's really refreshing. But, as is typical of Gary Whitta, the writing really is awful, in my opinion. I don't think it's fair to dismiss dissenting opinions on the writing as sexist.

I don't think I can look past the character design for Project Eve. Gonna have to be a skip for me.

It says something that I can tolerate some pretty out there Anime designs Yet Project Eve feels like a step to Far.

Edit: Many steps to far the more I think about Project Eve the more upset I get. I can not visit the thread about it for my own sanity.

Yeah, I hard noped on Eve because of the character design and complete framing of shots around that specific design, while also almost noping on Forspoken just because I'm not a fan of the the plot conceit even though I love the character design. Now I wasn't going to hard skip it just because of isekai, but I wasn't as thrilled as I should be. Amy Hennig's involvement has me back into it.

However;

I find it extremely telling that in the Eve thread posters are telling us to look past the character design and camera focus...

Anyone that says that is getting an immediate doubt from me. Along with the person that claimed they didn't even noticed the character design much because of how cool the world looked. Yeah the world and monsters were interesting as fuck to me but the biggest issue (to me) with the character design wasn't even the design itself, but the framing of it to the point where you literally can't not focus on the parts I find terrible. It's like if you needed a textbook example of male gaze, there it is. Almost to the point of parody but without any kind of self awareness or intentional humor.

Consider me on-board with Forspoken (you know, when timed exclusivity ends in two years).

Trailer was a ball.

It's amazing how those camera angles with that outfit in the first 30s of the Project Eve trailer put the game on a hard nope list for me. I'm just frustrated that Sony treated it like a headline game in the showcase event.

At least Frey in Forspoken looks great, and that game looks fun as well.

Well I feel exhausted by the project eve thread and it's only 10am here lol.

The whole thing complete with discourse around it feels a bit like opening a time capsule from 90s video game marketing.

It's hardly the most egregious element of the Project Eve trailer (my eyes feel offended watching whatever that was) but the person's stream I was watching brought up how utterly unrealistic it is to have hair that long and be fighting like that, hair is cumbersome, there's a reason people tie it when working in factories and such, it's basically just an extra weakness in a fight.

This feels like a monkey paw moment. The end result of this will be a a new hair pulling feature in the game.

Edit: the muscles on that forsaken character are great. Makes her more intimidating, for sure.

Its silly but I don't mind some fantasy/aesthetic even if unrealistic. Not all of it has to be realistic that's the fun of fiction and art. Largely the issues is here for me is the skin-tight outfit or heels and the camera flying close to her crotch because those elements tend to be sexualize more than a person's hairdo (good and bad hairdos aside).

I can't remember the name of it, but last year, a small Japanese developer showed off their game and it was a 3rd person shooter in fantasy world war two, where little girls dressed very similarly were running around mowing down fake Nazis with the camera basically shoved up their butt. I wanted to post the trailer as an example of how this sort of extremely generic oversexualized representation is about to hit us in a new wave we're not prepared for, but without the title, I was just left left awash in poorly made porn games on steam.

Time well spent...

Yup, both are made by Shift Up.

For a bit of the trailer I thought her hair was her armor flowing behind her like it was liquid armor or something.

Like, the most annoying thing about the project eve stuff for me is that I KNOW that Hyung Tae Kim is capable of gorgeous designs that aren't, by definition, pin up trash. While perhaps overdesigned, his more elegant female outfits are quite nice and his male outfits are the kind of Chunni cool that most gamers are looking for, but he doesn't realize that those designs are also cool on women.

So when we see that he's a significant presence on a new game and what we get is....project eve...it's just disappointing.

It got posted on the last page, actually. Unless there's more than one of thee games?

The same developer (SHIFT UP) is developing a mobile game, which makes Eve look tame in comparison.

It's not the mobile game. It was some other thing, similar in tone but...yeah, different product.

I think we just have to accept that these are coming in a big way as the previously untapped elements of the eastern game dev scene starts getting their feet wet.

Agreed, if the hair was the only issue here it would be a massive improvement, thought I do like the idea of a game that punishes you for having unrealistic hairstyles/clothing, sure you can wear that if you want, but don't expect to get far.

I like the person who got mad at me for being mean to the now permabanned member who was just wildly sexist (and who it turns out had previously been banned for defending underage sexualization).

Fuck decorum sometimes.

Seriously. The folks who tried to avatar-quote me, as if Rogue's super suit is somehow any dimension similar to what these devs are doing with their teenage girl protagonist, made me see red for a second.
