It's that time again which means a new thread for the new season of the new year. I'm sure everyone has their own New Year's resolutions in mind and mine is to be more active in here but we'll see how that goes! Our dear friend Printer Paper 8 X 11 would join me but he's incapacitated by some sort of reptile flu he refuses to explain to me. I'm not sure if I should believe him. Just a short three months until AOTY arrives and Spice & Wolf fans finally get their due.

Bang Brave Bang Bravern

Bang Brave Bang Bravern is set in a world where humanoid armored weapons known as "Titatonostrider" ("TS" for short) are used in warfare. The story kicks off when troops from various countries converge on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, including the main characters, Ao Isami of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and Lewis Smith of the United States Marine Corps. Isami and Smith cross paths during battle, but suddenly their teams are attacked by an unknown enemy, scattering soldiers and sending their forces into disarray. It's been seven years since the start of the Meiji Era, and the Japanese government is pushing its policies to catch up with the might of the Western nations. Former Aizu retainer Shizuma Origasa has thrown away his sword and gotten rid of his topknot, is now a rickshaw driver in Tokyo, but his swordsmanship skills from the Boshin War are still alive and well. He is looking for his wife, Sumie Kanomata, who went missing during the Boshin War. Shizuma is recruited into the police force after he ends up thwarting the assassination attempt of a government official.

At the same time, Kyoushirou Shuragami is a talented one-eyed swordsman who is a member of the Moriya-gumi yakuza gang that is embroiled in a turf war in Tokyo. The Moriya-gumi are working with wealthy merchants in the trafficking of opium, and the profits are being paid a mastermind plotting to overthrow the government to return Japan to a place for samurai.

The destinies of Shizuma and Kyoushirou, who have opposing points of view, are fated to cross. And a sad and ironic encounter and farewell await Shizuma.

I'm really trying to get into Witch from Mercury (on episode 14 I think), but damn it's tough. Sometimes there's something to be said for down time, slower pacing. But it's constant political intrigue and back stabbing back stabbers. It's too much, too often, so much so that I feel completely desensitized from caring or being shocked when yet another "oh this person is actually shitty" moment happens.

Tempted to scrub to her just whopping ass in her Gundam and then get to the way too few and far between moments between Suletta and Miorine, which is the main reason I'm here to begin with.

We're getting Gundam SEED Freedom and Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising in the same year and only months apart. This year has been a long time in the making.

May Metallic Rouge be good. Also may we get more good and well produced yuri anime this year.

I hope Bang Brave Bang Bravern has more up its sleeve because the commercials make it look less exciting than Fafner Exodus, and that came out a decade ago. Cygame Pictures should have all the money to make a really well produced 3DCG mecha anime. Alas the talented folks from Xebec are split between Sunrise Beyond and I G. Zwei.

I'm in for Dungeon Meshi, probably Mashle, and maybe Metallic Rouge depending on the reactions to the first episode. I will continue to enjoy Frieren and Apothecary Diaries as well.
As for the rest, I'll just wait and check in on the impressions in this thread. Hopefully there'll be some surprises this season.

To recap my year a bit, I finished 33 anime in 2023, compared to 47 last year.
My non-sequel anime of the year would be Skip to Loafer, followed by Frieren. My favorite sequel would be Vinland Saga S2. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to watch Pluto in 2023 but I'd imagine it'd be around top three or top five. Maybe top two even, who knows.

As for this season, I will be watching these new shows:
1. Dungeon Meshi
2. Himesama "Goumon" no Jikan desu
3. Great Pretender razbliuto

Several stuff I'm interested in but won't probably watch for now include Ao no Exorcist (I haven't reread the manga), Sengoku Youko (It's three cours and I don't know if I have the commitment right now), and Yubisaki to Renren. Bit of a weaker season for me, but with the three shows I mentioned including 2nd cour of Frieren, Kusuriya, and Undead Unluck, it should be a fun season still!

2023 was definitely a quality over quantity year for me. I watched the least amount of shows (by far), but the ones I stuck with were all at the very least pretty good, with 3 in particular being just absolutely outstanding 10/10s (MyGO, Road to the Top, and Frieren). Although ironically, 2023 did also have 2 shows that I rated 1/10, out of 9 that I've given that rating in total.

Hopefully 2024 can at least match the same quality. But given that most of the shows I enjoyed are either continuing or have confirmed sequels, that shouldn't be too hard.
