imagine watching the credits of xenoblade chronicles 2 and keep thinking that is not an high budget game.

just imagine being so stubborn.

How high do you think the budget was so that 1.42 million sales is exceeding expectations? Other people's "high" and your "high" might not be the same.

Dude I love XC2 (Its one of my favorite JRPGs), but it just isn't that high budget. The fact that their expectations were such that 1.42 million sales exceeded expectations demonstrates it more clearly than any credits sequence could. I'm willing to bet the reason why those credits are so long is because so many different companies/people ended up contributing a few art assets due to the fairly outsourced nature XC2's production. I alluded to it earlier, but Monolith does a good job of covering their weaknesses to make their games appear higher budget than they really are.

BOTW hanging on by the skin of its teeth with that 28th placed ranking. If the sequel trailer spurs interest, it should be safe for a while longer.

Any game can have a long credits sequence; just see any kickstarter game's credits. And even just looking at Xenoblade's credits, I doubt a lot of the people credited in the game had a substantial part in the game aside from the larger positions.

I retreated from that thread because lacks of hard data.
The argument is not Xenoblade had high budget (compare to what?) but it could reach $100m and that poster concluded game should be $70 because budget is too high.

Like I know GG was going to have low numbers, but how do you sell less than a ninja gaiden trilogy?

Long cut scenes, voice acting and extended soundtracks are not the sigh of million dollars budget. Visual novel games like Danganronpa, Stein Gate have full of them and they happy with 100k sold on PSP.

HD graphics have a funny way of ballooning the budget. Those geometrically complex models and all that shading and texturing and rigging and animating.

So with most of the games for this year announced, I have to wonder how Nintendo can keep up the Switch momentum in Japan, especially if the Pro is going to come out this year. Metroid Dread isn't something that's going to light the charts on fire in Japan.
Are they just going to rely on Mario Party and Pokemon? They're big series but they're still just remakes.
I thought for sure that Mario Kart 9 would launch with the Switch Pro, maybe they'll announce it later, or maybe they're choosing to coast until next year due to issues like Covid.

Rise up XSX this is the beginning!! Two more weeks in the same numbers and it will outsell the X1 in the same timeframe.

The Konami games might make up for "big games", like they did in 2020.

Don't underestimate Wario Ware since some entries have sold a million.

Also, stuff like SMT 5 will appease a hardcore audience. What Nintendo has this year is variety which is important in keeping the Switch's momentum going.

Edit: Also the Pokemon Remakes are games that Japan is incredibly fond of so they will be a big player in the fall no doubt.

Imagine thinking this proves your assertion of a large budget. How many names do we need for it to be $50 million? 75? 100?

What is the credit length to dollar ratio?

NSW at min ~85.635M WW

based on using JPN numbers.

Is 86 M by the end of the moth possible? I think not, but should be close.

And at that point, I'd say it passed the PS3 and XB360 pretty comfortably. Gonna guess that for this quarter WW it is at ~88-89M

But could be at 90M.

Switch is coming for the PS1 and the Wii next, they are finished.

If XB2 was budgeted around a breakeven point of 600k copies sold worldwide (which would make sense following the first game's sales trajectory) then budget was probably around 36$*600 000 = 21.6 million$

less if the breakeven point was lower. That credits list doesn't paint a much higher picture anyway

Why 36$? Retailer cut and manufacturing costs removed from the 60$ price point (15$ for the retailer, 9$ for the manufacturing)

None of those are as big as Animal Crossing, which made huge sales last year.

But I guess Team 2021 can still win out, the Switch has such a huge collection of games now.

Sure 2020 had Animal Crossing, but as I said in my post 2021 has variety on it's side which can target different audiences.

That's what's gonna help 2021 a lot and that's not even factoring Pokemon Remakes (which will be huge) and Mario Party.

The replies I received to my question about how any non top-tier JRPG could make any profit ever in that other thread all indicated that JRPGs reuse a lot of work from their previous game to keep the cost down. That seems like a correct reasoning to me, except it counters the premise put forward in that thread that 'most JRPGs cost up to 50M to make'. I could see setting up a fully new JRPG franchise with new lore, completely new music and new assets costing 50M or more if you go for something somewhat technologically advanced, but most JRPGs can probably keep their cost down quite a bit, and most aren't on a 50M budget otherwise they would have stopped making games already as they consistently fail to reach profitability (to be fair, it's probably why we don't see many top-tier budget JRPGs in the first place).

From the man who brought you "Pokemon DLC flopped because the Resetera thread for it had few pages", now comes "The Xenoblade 2 budget is massive because of long credits".
I don't think it's fair to beat them over the head with a previous poorly-considered take. If you don't agree with an argument being put forward, attack it on its merits, not on the poster's merits.

When it becomes a pattern, you have to start wondering if a person's even really trying to argue in good faith, or if they're best not to engage with at all.

Plus part of the Switch's strong sales is a continually growing body of evergreen titles that continue to sell well week after week, years after release.

For Xbox in Japan there is a big retail problem - there are only 2 (?) new games available in physical form (GoW Tactics and Chivalry) since Series S|X launch. The only JP game which is going to have a Disc edition in near future is Scarlet Nexus. That explains the lack of presence in Top-30 even for a big releases.
That's not how it goes, sales of Xbox games have reached the bottom in Japan. No publisher will print just 1000 copies and except big retailers no others will dedicate space for Xbox games and systems.

Warioware, Advance Wars, Metroid, and Mario Party should sustain sales. Weren't they hinting at a new Brain Training as well?

It's also 2 Pokémon games in a single fiscal year which should be interesting.

Will Superstar notably affect SMP's trek to 20 million?
Seems different enough for it not to have that big of an impact, no? Could very well be one of those situations where SMP quickly comes back on top in quarterly sales.

I think Sword/Shield vs BDSP will be like that too, but with more returning players from SwSh to BDSP than from SMP to Superstars.

Nintendo was careful in naming it something other than Super Mario Party 2. Both games are different enough in some regards that they wouldn't cannibalize each other's sales too much, but it will still happen. What's for certain is that it isn't a Let's Go vs SWSH scenario, where the older game is overshadowed by the new game by virtue of the new game being a new generation.

With a hint of:
3pne4m.png

To be honest though they are probably only maintaining any presence in Japan for the purpose of securing Japanese content for the worldwide audience, and trying to remove that key differentiator Sony has had over them this past generation. The last relevant PlayStation becomes in Japan and the more developers focus on markets outside of Japan the easier it will be for them.
