It has no doubt been mentioned, but leaving Annhilation out of the OP, which is thematically one of the truest forms of Cosmic Horror is cinema, while including surface-level trash like The Void is fucking shameful.

Annihilation is most certainly the better film but The Void is hardly 'trash'.

It's low budget with plenty of rough edges but it's a creepy little cosmic horror film that wears its influences on its sleeve (Barker, Lovecraft) and emulates them well enough.

I was pretty mad when i watched the movie. Not because it was bad but because it felt like such wasted potential.

My opinion on Void switched by my second watch. I didn't like it much when I first saw it but the atmosphere and pacing really clicked with me the second time

The Void was good. It has an amazing atmosphere but the ending kind of lost me. Once they go downstairs, it pretty much dropped off. I am looking forward to seeing it again some day though.

I liked The Void, even with its flaws.

Is there a movie / book about living / surviving in a void like dimension?

Apart from the suggestion here, I have seen those movies.

Resolution was mostly boring until the last thirty minutes where it turns into a SCP incident and gets uneasy and weird as fuck

Looking forward to The Endless

The Endless is a nice movie, hopefully you'll enjoy. The blu ray comes included with Resolution which is really great as that never had an official release where I live. I've seen it (and love it) but always wanted to own it. I also love the box art for The Endless.

Now The Endless was more like it. That was grade-A cosmic horror without using the well-trodden Lovecraftian imagery that way too many games and movies fall back on (looking at you, The Void). Actually it retroactively made Resolution a more interesting movie too

And yes, definitely watch Resolution before The Endless

Also, if you liked The Endless, check out the Spanish movie The Incident. It's on Netflix
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3528756/
That movie's brand of cosmic horror is more akin to Twilight Zone's "And When The Sky Was Opened", an unexplainable phenomenon rather than something Lovecraftian

Been lurking for a while and watched Resolution and then The Endless..... Very interesting and I liked them both (because I'm easily entertained :P). I was reading some Reddit stuff about Resolution, and how it flips the tropes, stereotypes and stuff.... Quite interesting. As for The Endless..... The ending sort of brought the movie down for me. I just didn't like it. It went over what I expected. I kind of didn't like how it explained some things from Resolution :/

As for Coherence..... Now that's a fucked up movie and really goes into what you would do by the end of the movie.

I'm sorry if this has been brought up already but if people are interested: City of the Living Dead. Don't let the title fool you. I'm not really sure if it's Cosmic Horror by nature but it's fucking weird, lol.

Also, keep up the movie recommendations :D I love these kind of movies!

Just watched Annihilation. Really enjoyed it.

Have not checked the thread, but are there any recommendations on books or games on this subject matter?

As for games, the one of the top of my head would be Bloodborne. That's out and out cosmic horror. Though as you'd imagine, the story isn't exactly forthcoming.

Just watched Coherence because of this thread, and it definitely delivered. Thanks for the recommendation, Era!

Now I'm looking into watching Resolution and Endless next, or maybe Stalker since I love Annihilation.

How did you not list Event Horizon.

Or did I miss it

(because it is basically the definition of what you're describing)

This is why I was expecting to get more pushback on Event Horizon, because I thought people would balk at the religious elements in that film disqualifying it as cosmic horror.

Ah, I see, well I think it fits the bill perfectly, especially if Alien does (very similar themes imo)

The Color Out of Space is the GOAT.

My favorite cosmic horror game is Sunless Sea. Fallen London is great too but it's a lot more quirky and very, very, very slow burn.

Ohhh. Fuck me, how could i forget. Cultist Simulator on the PC is also cosmic horror. And on GOG too, which is always a plus.

Y'all should watch Coherence:
coherence-2013-movie-poster.jpg

  • Celestial event? Check.
  • Inexplicable events that may or may not be tied to said event? Check.
  • Unexplained phenomena? Check.
  • People losing their grip on reality? Check.
  • Sort of ambiguous ending? Check.
It's a real good movie.

Stranger Things season 1 is to me, the most well-adapted Lovecraftian story in film or television. Season 2 would've really put a cap on it if they hadn't gone into too many directions with the plot(s).
Thanks. Just saw this and it was neat

Yeah Event Horizon truly fucked me up when I originally saw it in the theatre. It hasn't aged well, I still love it though.

Probably not a popular opinion but I think it would be really cool to eventually see a remake of it, cutting some of the goofy shit. There's a few scenes that really kill immersion for me watching it these days lol.

I'm absolutely baffled that so many people itt disliked The Void, especially if you're specifically looking for a cosmic horror themed film. I've been putting it on the back-burner for a while now due to the generally negative response here and elsewhere. I don't know what you could possibly have wanted in such a movie.

Was it (relatively) as scientifically grounded as Annihilation was? Definitely not, but then it wasn't trying to be. It was trying to be a suspenseful, character-driven, Clive Barker-esque space-related horror that didn't necessarily make all the sense in the world but did provided a convincing atmosphere, characters, tone, and visuals. Were some of the story beats maybe a little obvious from the get-go? Certainly, but you know what you're in for, so you just roll with it and enjoy!

It was maybe the most well-executed film of this sort I've seen, which - in a genre that easily can and frequently does come off as cheap and cheesy - is incredibly rare. I thought it was wonderful start to finish.

Baffled - baffled I say!

i saw The Void relatively recently and it wasnt the lack of scientific grounding that turned me off the movie. Visually the movie was amazing but the story and writing brought it down for me.

The Void felt totally amateur and not in a good way. Felt like someone saw some John Carpenter/HP Lovecraft fan art and thought they should make a movie out of it.

Because of this thread I ended up watching Coherence. I dug the movie but I feel like it sort of took a dive in quality in the last 20 minutes. Everything before that was fantastic though. Great concept for a movie.

I just finished the read of Blindsight yesterday and... Oh man, what a tour the force! Didn't scared me (never did, any book) but man, the dread, the grimdark atmosphere and the utterly weirdness of what they find is for sure the most disturbing and psychologically charged sci-fi book made in this century (very much as Annihilation, but longer, stranger, better explained). I would love to see a cinematic adaptation.

Now buying Echopraxia.
I just finished Blindsight earlier today and this line form a Reddit thread made the overarching narrative even more fascinating in hindsight. What a fantastic book.
It's not really a story about a crew investigating an alien ship. It's a story about a chess match between two unconscious intelligences: Captain and Rorschach.

I finished it a few days ago too. Great book. Going to check out the Rifters trilogy next which you can read for free on Watts website.

Over the weekend I watched Resolution and The Endless. Enjoyed them quite a bit. The Endless maybe went a bit too far in explaining things and showing things that didn't really need to be. Didn't need that big ending either.

The Void is next up.

John Langan's The Fisherman is a fantastic book about just this. It's a short tight story that really transports you to another place. Highly recommended for cosmic horror fan's.

Maybe this is a slight spoiler, but the finale of 2001: A Space Odyssey definitely drifts into Cosmic Horror territory.

The Void was pretty good. It felt like it was trying to do lots with the time that it had, and ended up being more of a "good" flick as opposed to a "great" one. Still, I definitely recommend it for those that haven't seen it...it's worth the watch.

I searched but didn't find it mentioned.

But i recommend the film Honeymoon (2014) It's some good stuff. Here's the trailer.

Annnnd. While i was getting the trailer. I found the entire film was also on the Youtubes. So watch it while you can.

I finally watched Event Horizon for the first time a couple of nights ago. I didn't hate it but I didn't really love it either. It may largely be down to age (mine) and perspective. It was obvious where chunks of story were missing and that hurt my experience. Also the sound mix was really low but maybe that is just the version on Netflix. I only have a cheap soundbar but I had that thing at max volume and if I so much as farted I couldn't hear the movie.

Overall I liked it but I think I'd be fonder of it if I had first seen it back when it released. Not sure why I never did as it's really the kind of thing I was in to.

I feel like Spring is a better version of Honeymoon, in terms of mixing romance with cosmic horror.

I still get surprised every time some one new discovers Coherence.

It is very low budget and niche af
