There is some cosmic things but no horror.
There is some cosmic things but no horror.
It has no doubt been mentioned, but leaving Annhilation out of the OP, which is thematically one of the truest forms of Cosmic Horror is cinema, while including surface-level trash like The Void is fucking shameful.
I was pretty mad when i watched the movie. Not because it was bad but because it felt like such wasted potential.Annihilation is most certainly the better film but The Void is hardly 'trash'.
It's low budget with plenty of rough edges but it's a creepy little cosmic horror film that wears its influences on its sleeve (Barker, Lovecraft) and emulates them well enough.
My opinion on Void switched by my second watch. I didn't like it much when I first saw it but the atmosphere and pacing really clicked with me the second timeIt has no doubt been mentioned, but leaving Annhilation out of the OP, which is thematically one of the truest forms of Cosmic Horror is cinema, while including surface-level trash like The Void is fucking shameful.
Got a link for those Reddit threads?Been lurking for a while and watched Resolution and then The Endless..... Very interesting and I liked them both (because I'm easily entertained :P). I was reading some Reddit stuff about Resolution, and how it flips the tropes, stereotypes and stuff.... Quite interesting. As for The Endless..... The ending sort of brought the movie down for me. I just didn't like it. It went over what I expected. I kind of didn't like how it explained some things from Resolution :/
As for Coherence..... Now that's a fucked up movie and really goes into what you would do by the end of the movie.
I'm sorry if this has been brought up already but if people are interested: City of the Living Dead. Don't let the title fool you. I'm not really sure if it's Cosmic Horror by nature but it's fucking weird, lol.
Also, keep up the movie recommendations :D I love these kind of movies!
Just watched Annihilation. Really enjoyed it.
Have not checked the thread, but are there any recommendations on books or games on this subject matter?
This is why I was expecting to get more pushback on Event Horizon, because I thought people would balk at the religious elements in that film disqualifying it as cosmic horror.

Thanks. Just saw this and it was neatY'all should watch Coherence:
It's a real good movie.
- Celestial event? Check.
- Inexplicable events that may or may not be tied to said event? Check.
- Unexplained phenomena? Check.
- People losing their grip on reality? Check.
- Sort of ambiguous ending? Check.
Stranger Things season 1 is to me, the most well-adapted Lovecraftian story in film or television. Season 2 would've really put a cap on it if they hadn't gone into too many directions with the plot(s).
Done!
i saw The Void relatively recently and it wasnt the lack of scientific grounding that turned me off the movie. Visually the movie was amazing but the story and writing brought it down for me.I'm absolutely baffled that so many people itt disliked The Void, especially if you're specifically looking for a cosmic horror themed film. I've been putting it on the back-burner for a while now due to the generally negative response here and elsewhere. I don't know what you could possibly have wanted in such a movie.
Was it (relatively) as scientifically grounded as Annihilation was? Definitely not, but then it wasn't trying to be. It was trying to be a suspenseful, character-driven, Clive Barker-esque space-related horror that didn't necessarily make all the sense in the world but did provided a convincing atmosphere, tone, and visuals. Were some of the story beats maybe a little obvious from the get-go? Certainly, but you know what you're in for, so you just roll with it and enjoy!
It was maybe the most well-executed film of this sort I've seen, which - in a genre that easily can and frequently does come off as cheap and cheesy - is incredibly rare. I thought it was wonderful start to finish.
Baffled, baffled I say!
The Void felt totally amateur and not in a good way. Felt like someone saw some John Carpenter/HP Lovecraft fan art and thought they should make a movie out of it.
agreedI agree that it didn't really come together, but I thought the mood and visuals were solid. It would probably make a better 10-15 minute film.
I just finished Blindsight earlier today and this line form a Reddit thread made the overarching narrative even more fascinating in hindsight. What a fantastic book.I just finished the read of Blindsight yesterday and... Oh man, what a tour the force! Didn't scared me (never did, any book) but man, the dread, the grimdark atmosphere and the utterly weirdness of what they find is for sure the most disturbing and psychologically charged sci-fi book made in this century (very much as Annihilation, but longer, stranger, better explained). I would love to see a cinematic adaptation.
Now buying Echopraxia.
I liked The Void, even with its flaws.
Is there a movie / book about living / surviving in a void like dimension?
Apart from the suggestion here, I have seen those movies.
John Langan's The Fisherman is fantastic book about just this. It's a short tight story that really transports you to another place. Highly recommended for cosmic horror fan's.
Gonna give this a go in about 10 mins. The Void was pretty good. It felt like it was trying to do lots with the time that it had, and ended up being more of a "good" flick as opposed to a "great" one. Still, I definitely recommend it for those that haven't seen it...it's worth the watch.
