What was the concensus on Shantae Half Genie Hero? I just completed it and I found it very disappointing. I really like the previous two, but this one felt like a shadow of those games. The metroidvania and Zelda dungeon-like aspect is gone, replaced with 7 pretty simple linear levels, which you replay about 4 times each to find secrets. I thought the story was incredibly weak as well, each level has a paper-thin justification for what you're doing (eg. every character suddenly loses their memory mid conversation for no apparent reason), which is totally unrelated to the overall plot, and then in between levels you're just doing this fetch quest trading game, getting different characters random items in exchange for other random items until you get the one which unlocks the next level. It looks okay but I much prefer the pixel art of the previous games. Really short too, less than 5 hours, and very easy; I was just damage boosting through most enemies in the second half as they did so little damage.

Had a look at the DLC but it all seems to reuse the same levels from the main game so I'm not going to bother with it.

It's an incredibly mediocre platformer considering how great the rest of the series is. I'm a backer and still always warn people about it because after Pirate's Curse it's hard to expect HGH to be such a disappointment.

The only redeeming point is the soundtrack really, but that's hardly a surprise. I never even tried the DLC and I doubt I'm missing much.

So, I'm playing True Fear: Forsaken Souls Part 1, a horror themed hidden object game, on expert difficulty and enjoying it so far (2 hours in). Puzzles are rather on the easy side (it's mostly finding the right objects to interact in different areas or assembling pictures), but I'm having a good time. There's a demo in the eshop.

Gunkankun and anyone else who might be interested in Warriors Orochi 4, I found this review / impressions video yesterday. It has dampened my enthusiasm somewhat. Note that he is not specifically reviewing the Switch version. It's a review of the game, not any particular port.

Warriors Orochi 4 - First Impressions/ Review (Unscripted)

Actually saw that exact video earlier today. The whole game being stages and menus is really disappointing as is having to pay for skills, but I guess that wont be too big a deal once you get playing. Might delay the preorder and see what the reviews say. Still excited for the game though, just want to get a few more impressions in.

Thanks for sharing!

As someone who has never played Pirate's Curse, I'll say that Half-Genie Hero is a decent game in its own right. The graphics and music are top notch, the gameplay is tricky but fair, and it's charming and funny all around. I think it gets dinged unfairly just because people like Pirate's Curse more.

I got all 3 DLC packs on sale & for the most part, they might be better than the main game considering aside from Risky Boots, there's absolutely NO backtracking & it's more like an arcade stage rush of "get to the end while finding these hidden items that are only 100% completion bonuses". The only one that I didn't like was the Beach Mode considering it got rather frustrating near the end. If you can get the version of the game where the DLC is included for free, it's worth checking out. It can feel like a huge downgrade if you're coming from Pirate's Curse, but it's not a bad game by any means, just one where I'd say wait for a sale.

I've fallen off the second half of Octopath Traveler pretty hard because the story hasn't held my interest and the difficulty seems artificially inflated with high number shields and long HP meters.

Are there any other turn based rpgs I should take a look at?

Grabbed Robonauts just a while ago since it was on sale, and... is it supposed to be really difficult or am I just bad? Can't get past level 7.

Thanks for the impressions on Shikando. I was debating on it, as well.

I believe I still have one of those Splatoon 2 outfit codes that came out this week, if anyone wants it.

Even though I haven't put too much time into MM11, I'm enjoying it. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of Mega Man but my favorite (and the one I remember playing the most) is MM2. 11 feels just like those days.

Yeah, I assume he's talking about that game, which I bought, and immediately regretted. Static artwork for the backgrounds are shit, and enemy waves just seem plunked down. For being pimped as a big Chinese shooter I was expecting more. It's genuinely a waste of funds, almost at any price. I don't like being entirely negative, but there's nothing to be contented with here, especially after the long wait, and paying $13 for this pile...

What says a lot about Shikhondo is that its online high score tables are unpopulated. I just booted it up and my score from when it came out on Day 1 is still in 83rd place. And some online high score tables for the other modes are completely empty. I'm guessing this hasn't sold well at all, hence the sale price since the week after release

To be fair, my problem with HGH wasn't that it isn't a Metroidvania like past games, but rather that it's an okay platformer with boring level design that gets reused in a very non organical way, probably due to lack of budget to make an actual Metroidvania, so it feels disjointed an unpolished as a result.

The DLCs as described by Zonic do sound better, but I'd need to buy the game again since I played it on Vita and got banned from PSN lol (worst part is I got all the DLC for free due to being a backer and can't use it).

On the Switch? Cosmic Star Heroine, Mario + Rabbids, Disgaea 5. There's also Battle Chasers but I can't speak on it since I haven't played it for myself.

Elsewhere? Dragon Quest XI.

At the moment, Debris Infinity and Steredenn are getting alot of playtime.

Debris Infinity is a steal at $5. If you enjoy Geometry Wars, you'll love this one.

Steredeen I bought on sale but I feel it's worth the full price. A rogue-like shmup. Enemy design is basic and it doesn't get crazy until the later waves. Even then, "crazy" doesn't mean a bullet hell. Just enough to keep you on your toes. What keeps me busy are the leaderboards.

Inversus is another good one. Simple concept but addictive.

I've been interested in twin stick shooters like Jydge and Neon Chrome but I've become very picky with this genre, lol. It needs to have online leaderboards but I make some exceptions from time to time.

Enter the Gungeon is another good one, but haven't played that in a while.

I'm constantly looking for more shooters on the eShop. Just to see if I missed a hidden gem. From time to time I'll make blind purchases just cause. That's the danger with having tour CC linked, ready to go, haha.

Is there anything you recommend?

Other than the games I've mentioned, I've been playing Labyrinth of Refrain. A mix of Disgaea and Etrian Odyssey, imo. Some interesting mechanics, like being able to break dungeon walls?

I want to give Neurovoider another chance. I remember enjoying it but quickly dropping it.

Namco Museum is another fun one, even though I've played Rolling Thunder the most.

Probably, I'm at the save the 3 three machines/towers level, any pro tips?

Ha ha, good timing! I just finished Robonauts this morning in one sitting, but I played through it on Casual difficulty so I'm hardly a pro. :P

Speaking of which, to start, make sure you're on Casual and not Hard when you select a level. I recommend using the shoulder buttons for the primary/secondary weapons so you can fire both simultaneously. Since your basic weapons have unlimited ammo, your fingers should almost never leave those shoulder buttons too. Don't worry about conserving special weapon ammo; power-ups are plentiful, so fire away with abandon. Those annoying flying enemies that swoop down at you are great for farming health "bloobs"; try to clear out the area of other enemies leaving only a flying enemy generator remaining, and then destroy it when you've collected enough health from its spawn. Don't forget to press the + button to view the map to see where enemies and objectives are.

It's an okay game. I'll be deleting it though since I feel like I got my dollar's worth out of the two hours I played, and I can't see myself ever trying out the local two-player mode in the near future with Smash coming. I wish Qubic Games spent more time fleshing out the actual game mechanics and adding more levels since they clearly put the polish on the graphics and music. And that music is excellent. Best unexpectedly awesome game soundtrack of 2018 for me. To my surprise you can listen to it on Spotify, which I highly recommend:

Oh absolutely, the level design isn't as fun because there's very little reason to revisit a stage aside from "you learned a new move that lets you find a new item", which thankfully the DLC understands because with the Costume & Friends DLCs, it's just playing all the stages in a row without a map. Risky still allows you to revisit stages, but it's more about finding power-ups to make your overall moveset more powerful & honestly, her moveset is a little more fun because it's basically the Pirate's Curse moves.

The Police outfit changes up the design a bit because it introduces the Mighty Switch Force block switching, and the Friends DLC is about swapping between 3 characters on the fly with having 3 unique stages at the end all about using each friend's moveset to the fullest. Ninja was a bit fun due to the moves while Beach forces you to keep moving due to a meter & having to collect sunscreen to not risk having the meter fill up & thus getting sunburned/getting damaged, but your moveset suuuccckkkssss for certain bosses & are easily the worst part of the DLC.

When you play the game as a stage rush platformer, it works a bit better. But yeah, considering it was a Kickstarter game, it probably didn't have the same budget to fully expand the levels to make them worth exploring. I totally understand why people aren't as fond of HGH compared to Pirate's Curse, but it's still an overall decent game. Just nothing as special compared to Pirate's Curse.

WAIT WHAT!??

Game Dev Story, Hot Springs Story, and Dungeon Village are 188MB each from Kairosoft?

I'm thinking, could it be texture upgrades? But that doesn't seem to make sense since everything in the games are all pixelated.
That's about how big those games are on mobile, too. They're huge.

If a sequel is a step down from the previous game then it isn't unfair to be down on it. That's just how it goes with sequels in media.

You should pick up Pirate's Curse.

Edit: i also think you shouldn't evaluate a game in a vacuum, especially if other entries in the franchise are available on the same platform.

Screaming because I just beat oOo: Ascension and I've never completed one of these twitchy maze games before.

It's a weird game. It has some serious quality issues: Tight yet unwieldy movement. A sluggish framerate. Off-kilter hazard patterns. An awkwardly placed hitbox that can pop into walls with a simple pivot. And yet this is some of the most fun I've had with a game of its kind. The escalating gimmicks got frequent laughs out of me, and the in-game visual design is easy on the eyes (most of the time). I think Its saving grace is the brevity of levels. The levels are so short that even if I face a barrage of seemingly unfair deaths I never feel discouraged. Victory is always just a few seconds away.

I don't think I can recommend the game to others for anything more than $5 but I'm satisfied with what I got at $8 and would pay the same price for a sequel of similar quality. I'd happily pay $15+ if they addressed all the mechanical issues and fleshed out the barebone menus. The dev won me over :)

------------

My ranking of completed Switch games so far:

1. Super Mario Odyssey
2. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
3. Bomb Chicken
4. Splatoon 2
5. Detention
6. oOo: Ascension
7. Oxenfree

Now, onto Minit and Goetia...

So... Finally started 2064: Read Only Memories and this is quite good so far. The sprite work is lovely, the interface very nice, great music too and the voice acting is really good, especially for an indie game.

Really into it. Also I'm playing Yo-kai Watch Blasters: White Dog Squad on the side and noticed Turing from ROM shares voice actress with Komasan, hhaha. They're both the cutest things.

The list of Switch games I should pick up is a big hole with no bottom... :-)

I'm of mixed feelings about this; while I understand being disappointed that Game 2 isn't as great as Game 1 (see Excite Truck --> Excitebots), I also feel that each work should be evaluated on its own merits and given a chance to come out of its siblings' shadows. For me, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is like Back to the Future Part 2, where it simultaneously doesn't reach the lofty heights of its predecessor but is still an entertaining work in its own right.

I've played a little under 2 hours of The Midnight Sanctuary so far and I'm enjoying it well enough. The visuals really are great and they do some cool stuff with the main visual trick with the static textures. The story is somewhat more compelling than I would've anticipated and the localization isn't bad at all, only occasionally a bit clunky. It's very much a traditional VN, in the sense that there's no interactivity outside of choosing locations to visit, but even then decision-making (at least so far) is limited to picking the order in which you'll watch certain scenes play out, since you have to see them all as far as I've played, and I'd be surprised if there's anything approaching branching paths later on.

There are some smallish issues with the Switch version that are likely not present in the other versions. It eats through the battery very quickly and really gets the fan running (especially on the map screen), moreso than most other seemingly more demanding games. Also, the confirm/continue button is mapped to B with no option to change it to A (which does nothing in any situation I've seen). Not a huge problem and likely just a vestige of porting from other control schemes first, but a bit annoying.
Also, there are no real touch controls, but it seems like they were half-implemented and not fully removed at some point, since tapping around in the map screen can sometimes cause different things to be selected. Pretty weird.

Anyway, I have no real sense of how long it'll be but I'll almost certainly finish it. I think I could give a middling recommendation to those interested, although I think the only advantage of the Switch version is its portability, so other platforms may be worth playing instead. Still, its nice to start seeing some VNs on the eShop, and I hope future ones don't have battery issues like this...

Nice , thanks for the detailed response. Will check out those recommendations.

I haven't been playing much on Switch, barely even scratched the surface of Zelda. Just been playing Dead Cells recently because it's so easy to pick up for just 10 minutes. That's why I asked for your recommendations, because I'm looking for short burst games.

Not getting close to them is difficult, as they won't move around the planet if I don't go near them. I agree that OST is great though, reminds me a lot of the OST in Housemarque games, not as good, but similar.

Any feedback on the Switch version of Jettomero? Visual style is pretty cool and concept seems kinda original.
It works great (unless there's 20 flying saucers attacking you, in this case framerate takes a dive but the game is still playable) and it's visually and musically stunning. Definitely recommended to all who have loved Journey. Great game. Could be a bit repetitive for some but just the feelings when you're flyin' in space make the game worthy of your money and attention.

Thanks for the feedback! Heard that the game had procedurally generated planets, is there an endless mode after the main game when the main game is over?

Not getting close to them is difficult, as they won't move around the planet if I don't go near them. I agree that OST is great though, reminds me a lot of the OST in Housemarque games, not as good, but similar.

Yeah, those tanky purple laser enemies are nasty. You either have to chisel away at them using your secondary weapon or hope for a power-up to extend the range of your primary. On one occasion I think one of them even jumped off of another planet in pursuit of me. They suck. lol

And now that you mention it I can see the similarities to Resogun in the soundtrack. Good stuff. :)

Thanks for the feedback! Heard that the game had procedurally generated planets, is there an endless mode after the main game when the main game is over?
Yes, you can continue as long as you want after the ending. If you like photo mode, you can easily be totally sucked in the game thereafter. The panoramas in this game are absolutely fantastic.

Mind you, this is taken throught the Switch capture, with no filters or tweakings of any sort. These are directly from the game. One interesting thing though is you can play the whole game if you want with all the filters available in photo mode.

What is the consensus on Iconoclasts?
I'm playing through it now, i like it, the gameplay is nothing sensational but it's got an intriguing story, likeable characters, really bright and colourful art, creative boss designs/fights and okay music. The music is actually pretty good, but it's one track per area and it can a bit tiring after a bit.

It's a solid game worth the price.

So, Sega Ages Phantasy Star...was hoping to see a western release sometime soon. Anybody know what's up with that?

What is the consensus on Iconoclasts?

Liked it at first, the colorful visuals and animations felt reminiscent of the GBA, while the puzzle mechanics and bosses are quite well done.

The pathing can be confusing however, especially if you break from the game for a long period. The objective clues are vague and relate to locations that are unmarked on the map, leading to some wandering. The writing is difficult to parse as is the plotting, to the point that it can be both baffling and excruciating to try and piece together even if paying close attention. Not a fan of the music at all either.

Shame as there are punctuated moments I genuinely like, but too much in between that pushed me away. One of the few games I just kind of dropped fairly deep in.

Need some help:

I've not got a high tolerance for long games these days, but I feel like I wanna get Okami as I've never played it before and it's pretty well loved.

I know it's a long game but how is the pacing? I can handle a long game if it's well paced but if it has a lot of filler/bullshit then.....

Okami is not well paced. Especially the opening hours.

That's not to say it isn't great....but it's not well paced.

Traded in a bunch of old crap at Gamestop for $35 in eShop credit, and I'm staring really hard at that Beat em Up Collection...
Don't do it. That's a game you pick up on sale and it will likely get a discount next month. There's no depth to those games.

As a rule, I try and put trade-in credit towards something truly wonderful.
