Does anyone know if PAL WEGAs support NTSC signals? Thinking of getting one seeing as they're so abundant and cheap in comparison to Sony's PVM and BVM line.

Been working on restoring an old Gamecube I got in a game lot. It's not perfect but it looks miles better. I decided to paint it since the shell was in awful condition. Will probably give it another coat around the button areas. And maybe change the LED light to a different color.

I'm working on lighting up my setup. Had to do more soldering than I expected and I still need to fully hide the connector wires, but it's coming along I think.

I think I'm about to pull the trigger on an Analogue NT Mini.

Part of me feels like this is crazy (I have less than 30 NES games). Reviews seem to be positive, but I just can't get a gauge on how much I'll actually use the thing. Anyone else here have one?

Edit: And just like that, they're sold out :(

This is why I am so happy I pulled the trigger on the second batch — I was worried they'd get discontinued at that would be it. I am still regretting not having bought their Analogue CMVS Neo Geo years ago. Those things are gorgeous, and no resell for over a grand — but you never see them for sale.

Nice setup! Where did you get your lights? I've been thinking about lights for my setup in the OP.

I got these ones from Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073RC43WF/?tag=era0f0-20 along with this extra wire https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071GY9V64/?tag=era0f0-20 and this package of connectors https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011BD2B5Q/?tag=era0f0-20 .

Just a heads up some soldering is required. It seems they make the LED strips in 1 1/2 foot strips and anything longer than that is just 1 1/2 strips soldered together. To connect the wire to the L shaped connectors requires some soldering too. It's not bad at all if you have some soldering experience.

Hey RetroEra!

I recently picked up a Neo Geo Pocket Color, and I'm loving the heck out of that thing.
So far I've got:
  • SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighters Clash (SNK Ver.)
  • SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Milennium
  • Samurai Shodown! 2
  • Fatal Fury First Contact
  • King of Fighters R-2
  • The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny
  • Metal Slug 1st Mission
  • Metal Slug 2nd Mission
Played some Metal Slug: 1st Mission on my commute this morning.
Currently I'm looking to get Magical Drop Pocket, Faselei, Sonic: Pocket Adventure and Dark Arms Beast Busters. There are a couple others, but those are the main ones, especially Faselei. All my games are Japanese so they're not breaking the bank too much, though I'm not buying boxes. Metal Slug set me back a bit still :(
Anyone else got one? Thoughts? I love the clicky stick and nice buttons. All the games are really nice and charming and the fighting games play surprisingly closely to their Neo Geo counterparts.

I'm also thinking about frontlighting it, but it looks really hard. Anyone done that?

The clicky stick on it is fantastic, great little system. I'd recommend Biomotor Unitron as well. It's a fantastic little RPG with a robot you can upgrade and outfit however you want. Game has crawled up into the $50 range nowadays though.

Edit: Wow, I haven't collected for the system in years. Everythings jumped up in price. In 2010 I got almost all of my games for under usually $6-$20. Good luck with that nowadays.:(

Newport, South Wales
I'm based in South East Wales (towards Chepstow), but my nearest big city is Cardiff. I also work here as well

I collect manly Gameboy and Mega Drive games, as these 2 consoles were the 2 that i grew up with. Didn't have many when i grew up, but now i can add to the great collection. Been adding to my collection for about 7-8 years, ever since i got a full time paid employment. I had to sell many of my collection off to keep myself afloat, i hated doing it but times were tough and i had to pay the bills. I have rebought quite a few, and got a corker deal on a few.

My retro backlog isn't too big, most of the games i've recollected i've finished in the past. It's nice to play them for nostalgia purposes though. I'm on the hunt for a Sonic 3 cart for the Mega Drive, i swear i have it somewhere in the attic but i cannot find it to save my life. Sonic 3 (and Knuckles) is my favourite game of the original Mega Drive Sonic games, a last of the good Sonic's in my opinion. I have looked in the retro stores in the area, and there was one in Swansea before it burned down.

Hey guys. Do we not have a Neo Geo thread? I searched and couldn't find one. After looking and thinking about it since I was 12, I finally just bought my first system (not including the CD unit which I sold years ago). I'm hoping it'll show up this coming week and would like to talk shop with owner MVS/AES owners.

First time I've heard of that board, huh. I can probably start a Neo thread, but it won't be super extensive as I'll be a "new" owner as of this week!! I can't believe I finally took the plunge.

EDIT: I just read his thread on the RGB board. Yeah, that's the old one alright. Assume it would be not cool to copy a large portion of it? It's REALLY good.

You're in good company. I've got an MV-2F board sitting in an old server case i attached some AES controllers to.

The RGB-board is the reason its so dead in RetroERA. I and many others primarily post there.

Btw, there is no Neo-Geo-thread, but there is an SNK-one: https://www.resetera.com/threads/snk-community-ot-the-future-is-now.1245/

Great thread! :)

- What systems do you collect for and why?
While I did massively downsize my collection last year for space reasons of moving to a small apartment, I still have a collection that spans from the '70s to the present day. I enjoy every era of video games

- How long have you been collecting?
Since the early '80s when I got my first game system, a VIC-20. I would have liked to start even earlier but it wasn't economical.

- How big is your classic game backlog that you have come to accept you will never touch?
If I own a game, then I have played it.

- What pictures would you like to share of the stuff that's been hard to find, rare or just cool?
No cool pictures right now, most of my stuff is in boxes.

- What are you looking for right now? It's all about the hunt!
It would be cool to come across some old C64 Aardvark Software text adventures.

- What city are you in?
Burnaby (suburb of Vancouver), Canada

Thanks for adding the X68000 thread I made. Here are some other classic appreciation threads, if anyone's interested: I tried to mostly cover a bunch of non-Japanese ones that I didn't see threads for.

Alright, let's do this!

I have to admit that I'm feeling a little uneasy to post pictures of my setup and stuff and have never done so before because....uh, well, I'm a worried about negative feedback, I suppose. Which is ridiulous because, as long as I am having fun with my collection, all is good, right? But still....I don't have anything special like this AWESOME Tate monitor (congrats on that, looks fantastic!!!) or a "Stadium Events" for NES or LED-lit shelves, which also look very nice in that post above me. My shelves are boring. :)

I'm really very quiet about collecting games, mainly because I don't have any super high standards. I don't have my games graded or am too concered with condition or manuals...as long as the game is boxed one way or another, I'm fine. Just wanna be able to take them out of their packaging and play them, you know?

So this is a really low-standard "collection" you're looking at here, but I'm absolutely loving it and have done so since 1988, since my parents gifted me an NES for my ninth birthday. They have been very very awesome about gaming in general and gave me everything I ever asked for, including import systems like 3DO, Turbo Duo and even the Neo Geo AES. Well, not EVERYthing, they didn't have unlimited money either so I didn't have huge amounts of games....like between 15 and 30 per system, maybe. Luckily I never sold anything.

Have slowly been collecting games I wanted to play ever since, because playing on emulators and whatnot does absolutely nothing for me, sadly. There have been times, like right now, at which I had to work with very little money...because of university in the past, and currently because having to small kids and lower than anticipated income. But I have experienced unbelievable kindness from other collectors, which ranged from selling me stuff at killer prices to a gifted "Radiant Silvergun" for Saturn, and yes, at a time at which it already was friggin' expensive.

Sorry for this wall of text, I realize it's very tl;dr ^^
Let's continue:

- What systems do you collect for and why?

All of them, almost, because every system has something I really, really wanna play :)

Exceptions are some handhelds because I'm a bit more of a big screen person, so I have excluded Game Gear, Lynx, Wonderswan, Neo Geo Pocket and obscure stuff like Tiger and the likes. Also no Game & Watch.
I am also NOT collecting anything older than the NES, simply because that's my starting point when I was a kid and previous system are not as much fun for me.
Oh, and no arcade PCBs for me :( I can't solder and they're expensive....just can't have it all.

- How long have you been collecting?

Oops, already stated that above. Since 1988, starting with an NES with "Mario Bros.", shortly followed up by "Super Mario Bros.".

- How big is your classic game backlog that you have come to accept you will never touch?

Huh, what? I've played every single game I have!

Well...I have yet to play many of them more thoroughly, of course, but no game is "untouched".

- What pictures would you like to share of the stuff that's been hard to find, rare or just cool?

Okay....never done this before but since this place is all about new beginnings, so why not. ^^
This could also go in the general "gaming collection" topic but I'm here now, plus I like the bonus questions and the focus on retro. Also they're talking way too much about digital games in their collections, which to me is an oxymoron. :)

Let's roll:
__________________________________________________________________________________

The room in which I PLAY my games is kind of modular, now that I think about it. The couch is for watching stuff on the silver screen that's not visible due to the angle of the photo, and I can place comfy armchairs in front of the TV depending on the number of people playing. The launch PS3 is not here right now, it's upstairs because the kids wanted to watch a Blu-ray.

This is the other end of the room, I have moved the armchair back next to the other one in front of the CRT TV, and when I'm on the couch they are against the right-hand wall and out of the way.
The table for arcade sticks is only here when needed as well.

This is a little bathroom in the other room across so we don't have to run upstairs every time one needs to pee. ^^ I include this because if the gaming room wasn't here, neither would this, so it kind of belongs to it. I had it installed just for this purpose. :)

Back to topic. Here's my hardware shelf, so no, I don't have everything hooked up due to space constraints. Not in here are the PS3 and everything that is next to the Sony TV in pic 1 (PAL X360, NTSC-J X360, X1, PS4, WiiIU, Switch)
On the right there's some stuff that's too big to fit anywhere else. Before you ask: The styrofoam head is for PSVR, to put it there between uses when I don't want to store it in its box. :)
And yes, the left one's too crowded and not nice to look at. I'm aware.

Across this "storage" room I was recently able to put three of my larger games, but the wife's threatening to place a flower vase on top so we'll see how it goes. ^^

So this is pretty much the main body of my game "collection" (not sure if it warrants those term objectively, but whatever). More detailed pictures below this one:

This is the shelf in the front, with current gen, Xbox, WiiU....you get the picture. 3DO is on top because those beautiful longboxes are too big for anywhere else. :)
To the right would be the room where the systems are stored, by the way. On the left you're seeing some DVD stuff, that obviously has nothing to do with this right now.

All right. Here's Sega Master System, a couple of PS1 games and Amiga CD32 on the top two shelves.

Here's WiiU amiibo editions, Switch, Gameboy, GBA, PSP, PS2 and PS3. Also my only three SNES big boxes. As a kid I was mainly into importing SNES games from the US so I got the likes of "Mystic Quest" and "Secret of Mana" from there, in standard small boxes. That's fine with me, though.

Couple of games that are too large for the normal shelves.

Here's NES, SNES, N64, Mega Drive, MCD and Saturn:

Closer look at the top four rows:

Bottom four:

The Neo Geo was my favorite system from the moment I saw it in magazines, and it is to this day. Got an US system for Christmas in 1993, and had it modded with a twin BIOS for blood 'n boobs the year after, just in time before I received "Samurai Shodown" and "The King of Fighters '94". Crazy shit was crazy! ^^

This is Dreamcast, Sega 32X, Jaguar, PC Engine and, on the top shelf, FM Towns Marty. Man, I still want so many games for that one....almost impossible to find, especially at an affordable price. :-/

I just KNOW everyone's gonna be asking what's behind the black curtain, so let us get this out of the way. It's just boxes with all the hookups for the systems (still wanna lable those with the console logos), and stuff like a replacement CRT TV, "Rock Band" instruments, dance mats, a cardboard box with some replacement cases for PS2 or GCN games....you know, boring shit like that.

- What are you looking for right now? It's all about the hunt!

Money is really really tight right now so currently I'm not actively looking....my holy grail would probably be "Flying Shark" for FM Towns Marty, though.
Also some Super Famicom games that I can't afford.

I've been feeling a massive itch to get some more Gameboy games recently, as well. As you can see I don't have many. "Alleyway" would be my very most wanted right now, for some reason.

- What city are you in? (could be good for RetroEra meet ups)

I'm from Hamburg, Germany. Anyone else? No...? ........hello? :)

That is a MASSIVE collection in quantity and quality. The Neo Geo stuff especially is mighty impressive! Are those all AES carts?

Really...? I mean...thanks! But I'm really not sure about how much of a collection it really is, as I am so little OCD about condition, oompleteness and so on.....just wanna be able to play the game, and put it with the others to enjoy looking at it from time to time. But if you think my stuff is worthy of that term - terrific! Very happy to hear it and it was worth it to finally take the plunge and post some pics.

Yes, AES is the only Neo Geo I ever owned. I have actually never seen an MVS until about two years ago. :)

Some of these games would have been MVS exclusive, or CD in one case, so I had to get MVS conversions of these....it was either that or getting a consolized system, but in the end I decided to go the more route I liked better anyway when some terrific fellow from the UK sold some of those and I caught it in time. They go so nicely with the proper AES ones.

The AES is the only system constantly hooked up at the CRT. All other systems rotate. That love is real. ^^

So what's everyone's area of focus for retrogaming? We all might collect everything, but I'm sure we all have something we love over all else.

For me that's the Game Boy line. I've been slowly building up a collection beyond my childhood collection and once I get a space to display it all I am going to go all in. I've also made it the focus of my modding efforts.

Currently, i bounce between Saturn, Genesis, and NES. I've been repairing a PC engine CD right now though.

My current focus is CD consoles. Don't know why, but I totally love them, even the crappy FMV titles. I'm also documenting them in chronological order in a video series called ChronCD (yes, Dr. Sparkle on Chrontendo inspired it and even helped me get started). I'm currently through a few years of the PC-Engine CD/Turbografx CD if anyone's interested: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlLaoX7aLm99-8DoKJp4bf61CUvS-ewps

Well, I finally got a Neo Geo. I went full hog and bought the system I've wanted for years — the Analogue CMVS. This is the last major system I have never owned. I am beyond excited, and admit it was a splurge purchase in advance of my birthday this coming weekend. And, since the games are crazy expensive, I went the NeoSD route. 250+ original titles at my fingertips on real hardware. I'm in love.

Very nice!
I'm just waiting for my RGB cable to test my AES with the OSSC and then I'm gonna pull the trigger on the NeoSD, too!
I had a four-slot MVS with a supergun in the past, but this is much cleaner. Welcome to the club!

By the way, has anyone noticed that the "|OT|" for this thread uses upper-case i's instead of pipes? ( | ) it's a little weird. Only noticeable in the tab title

i just want an RGB modded AES & good flashcart

how much you want for that ultrasketch though

also what's a X68000 everdrive go for

If I ever got around to getting a NeoSD, I'll let you have my 161 in 1 for much cheaper than whatever the typical price for one is.

As for an X68000 everdrive, it depends on if you want to go the floppy emulator route or the SCSI HDD replacement route but this is what I have in mine: http://www.artmix.com/SD_FuzinMonster.html whereas if you go the floppy emulator route you'll need two of these.

...well, damn

what's the hardware go for in working condition now though?

That's probably going to end up costing around 600. You could also gamble on a junk one and hope that all you have to do is replace the power supply which would likely be much cheaper. How are you with a soldering iron?

Of course, if you want to go the HDD route or play games like Street Fighter 2' you'll need a RAM expansion as well.

PFGA NeoGeo

Analogue, pls
The 68000 is one of the most well-understood processors in the world. It's only a matter of time before we start seeing high quality FPGA Mega Drives, NeoGeos, and X68000s. We already have an FPGA Amiga so I'd be surprised with the new popularity of these devices if we don't start hearing about them soon.

....well, shit
no time soon, but it's on the list then!

It does RGB natively.

ah right right, but isn't it only the lower serial # units that do it well or something?

I understand the appeal of going original AES, but it severely limits your access to actual carts based on the crazy prices. That's why I went the Analogue CMVS route. If you don't want to spend the extra cash to find one of those, just get an Omega CMVS. That gets you access to the full MVS library at a reasonable cost. Jumping into the AES scene in 2018 seems a little nuts in my opinion.

ill freely admit to just wanting it for the aesthetic, always wanted one as a kid. please believe, the few carts i have aside, i'd just buy something like an NeoSD and some good sticks & that'd be it for me, not diving down that hole.

Yup, same. I bought SamSho2 to test the thing and now I'm gonna pick up a NeoSD. Will end up cheaper than a CMVS and flash cart anyway cause I got the console for cheap

The thing that's killing me right now is I really want to play Gunlord on my system, but can't. There are no dumps available for the NeoSD and it's impossible to find on MVS. And, if I did, it would be $500. The AES version sells regularly for over a grand. I know I can get it on Dreamcast, but I haven't bought a Toro for my setup and honestly don't know if that's another rabbit hole I want to go down right now.
