Let's just say Japanese readers aren't too keen on it either.

qNOajuc.png

But apparently, it may be getting an anime soon.

I'm not too informed on how volume sales tend to behave with long-running series, but that decline seems a tad too steep!

And yeah, I saw somebody talking about a Platinum End announcement during Jump Festa earlier today. The only reason I remembered it even existed lol.

I ended up dropping Platinum End but it was absolutely the weaker work of the three (Death Note, Bakuman, Platinum End). There some neat aspects to its magic system but it was just..... Really dull tbh. That and all the problematic stuff in their work felt in full force in the manga (tho that might be me looking back. Its been a minute since Ive looked at jt.

Platinum End was just a worse version of Future Diary, which isn't a great place to be. It was "fine", but it should have been better then "fine" with the pedigree.

Eden's Zero is really growing on me, same as Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest which actually seems above original Fairy Tail.

In any case, does anyone read Platinum End by Ohba and Obata? I've been meaning to pick it up, at least a volume or so to see if I like it.
Monthly series tend to have lesser comments than weekly ones, even something like World Trigger only gets posts on one or two days a month...

that said,

I did read Platinum End monthly through the first 20 or so chapters...thought it was good, then just put it on the side because it was monthly and well, I like to have lots to read (now I just buy the volumes). I was hoping it would get an anime.

Honestly, I think thats all it needs for those volume sales to pick up. IMO, I'd assume it would get an anime, last, if the anime doesnt make it explode like Owari no Serafu or BLue Exorcist, then it'll end in two or so years.

I liked Platinum End, the lead cast and their allies. Art and character design was/is great too. The Death Game aspect is always a compelling idea.

do love sports drafts, so this World Trigger chapter was fun, but I kinda feel like I needed to have more of the cast memorized, lol. I don't remember these peopleeeeeeee
Definitely felt a little bad when we got to the two pages of operators and realized I couldn't place half of them on their corresponding squad.
So... everyone should watch Urasawa Naoki no Manben.
Wow, pretty stacked guest list. Power move to hold off on his own episode until season 3 haha.
Maiko-san Chi No Makanai-san (Up to Date)
A wonderful manga about the life of a caterer for a maiko (junior geisha) house in Kyoto, a young 16-year old who is best friends with an aspiring maiko but who dropped out of her apprenticeship. Very slice of life, very calming, mono no aware and all that jazz. With chapters only about 12 pages long and lots and lots of food porn, it's fairly plotless though structurally it does basically follow the progression of the best friend through her apprenticeship. Probably at its best when contrasting the 'public facing' part of the maiko persona with the 'backstage' portion (a maiko who mostly wanders around off-duty in glasses and a hoodie is the best example of that contrast).

198353l.jpg

I will say for all the ephemeral beauty of the Japanese cultural traditions etc etc etc it's nearly impossible not to come to the organic conclusion (though the narrative doesn't draw attention to it) that being a maiko/entertainer/geisha is baaaaaasically just prostitution but far more polite and with no sex. The parallels of mostly having elderly male clients shower you with money and gifts as maiko display their feminine arts is so upfront it hurts.

Apparently NHK is making an anime ... in 3D. it looks godawful.
Sounds interesting. Went through some other covers and that art is great.

Backgrounds in that CG trailer kind of remind me of hi score girl but I can find any staff info.

In any case, does anyone read Platinum End by Ohba and Obata? I've been meaning to pick it up, at least a volume or so to see if I like it.

I'm curious because I never hear anything about it and I don't know why this little enthusiasm. Like, Bakugan and Death Note had a fair share of problems (many of which could have been solved ending them sooner), but I still really loved both of them and they're incredibly popular, so I'm wondering if this is just not very interesting or good.

I did check it out when it first started for about four or so chapters. I remember disliking the MC's design and hating his demure nature, but the whole guardian angel concept (and a tournament iirc?) seems cool.

Is Platinum End any good?
If you read Platinum End hoping to enjoy a new "Death Note", you would be disappointed. Overall, the story has good moments (but is not exceptional), and the art is amazing as you would expect from Obata. A main problem, in my opinion, was the pacing. This was particularly evident in the final arc, where I had the feeling that nothing was happening for 4-5 months - just not too much uninspired dialogue, in particular if (I repeat myself) you expect something at the same level as the Kira VS L "fight". I fear that the monthly serialization didn't help Ohba. Having the physical volumes, when I re-read them I felt that the story was progressing in a more natural way than when I read the monthly chapters (I doubt this will be apply to the last chapters, which were really dragged).
However, there exist much worse manga. As BassForever is saying, this a "fine" series - not completely bad, not exceptional. If you read it with this mindset, you could appeciate it.

Speaking of Obata, I remember having Ral Grad be one of the first things I read with my SJ app... I remember eyeing it in bookstores years back, knowing the artist and how this is sort of a Blue Dragon spin-off (but a super MA-rated, edgy one). Oh boy... that was... yeah... Would not recommend that to anyone :/ Sucks that it has the nice-looking Obata art...

im glad this means that things on Renta aren't blocked from being licensed, further reason to not have to invest in another digital platform, waiting paid off lol
It actually got pulled off Renta at some point a while ago (it's been gone for at least a year I think), the hope was that it was finally licensed by someone, and it turns out it was Seven Seas

I hear it's quite good?
Incredibly so. I bought the Japanese version to own it physically, and the 3 times a year it seems like that the sequel series gets a new chapter are joyous, re-read the entire series to refresh/prep drop everything moments for me

it's refreshing to have late 20s-early 30s "wasting my life" kind of people

How is Aka so good at writing characters we like to root for?

Killing slimes for 300 years
I thought this would be a generic isekai but it's actually almost more of a lighthearted comedy about family almost in the vein of onepunch man if OPM wasn't so incredibly cynical about people
Pretty enjoyable, looking forward to the anime and might look at the novel's to see how they did comedy in writing

I've bought the English releases of the light novels, I thought they did a good job with the localization. Been a while since I read it last, but I recall there being more exposition on things the manga version sped through, among other things.

Platinum End is still running?
I always assume it was ended for awhile since the last time(2years ago) I read it likely near the end.

I think it will end in the next chapter (in the worst case, in 2 chapters). As I mentioned before, the last arc was dragged on, and there were many breaks (e.g., when Obata had to draw the Death Note one-shot). For a monthly series, 2-3 breaks per year mean you only have 10-9 chapters (2 volumea) per year.

Yoshi no Zuikara: The Frog in the Well Does Not Know the Ocean, Vol. 1

Finished the first volume of the Barakamon's author new manga. Not quite as quirky but its fun.
Has a fun quirk where the first chapter is the manga he's drawing which ends up as his new serialized work.
Presumably the manga is going to consist of the MC reengaging with local life and his community after being a shut in for a decade trying to draw fantasy manga.

November Recommendation: Jitsu wa Watashi wa (by Eiji Masuda)

7u8pzfl.png

Monster romcom? | 22 volumes, complete work, licensed in English as "My Monster Secret"
High school student Kuromine Asahi is the kind of guy who literally cannot tell a lie. Whether it's trying to maintain a poker face in a simple game of cards, or keeping scurrilous gossip to himself, Asahi is a total failure when it comes to the art of deception.

So what happens when he stumbles upon the most shocking secret of his life? (source)

From OniBarubary:
Ignore that simple premise and just realize that this is one of the funniest manga that has ever existed. And in much the same way as Gintama, it is excessively good at getting you to emotionally invest in the characters by laughing along with them and their silly hijinks and then when shit gets real it gets realer than fucking real. This manga has made me cry. (source)

You all sure read a lot more manga in November

Can anyone who's read all My Hero give me a heads up on the quality so far. I finished watching all the anime and wanted to start reading the manga right after it.

The current arc of My Hero Academia is the best the series, easily. It's been pretty great, go for it.
I second this. The first arc after the anime adaptation is among the weakest ones, in my opinion. But after that the series hugely improves, with two of the best arcs (including the current one, that is amazing). Besides, AquaWateria, I would recommend you to read the full manga, including the already adapted chapters, if only for Horikoshi's drawing, the best one in the current WSJ and that is almost impossible to replicate in an anime.

Finally caught up with Jujutsu Taisen. Shibuya arc has been great, and I can't wait to see it animated! Story took a bit to find itself, feeling disjointed in its plot/use of characters up until this arc, but there's been a lot of payoff at least!

Overall the content past where the anime is has been alright I guess. The current arc is stronger than it normally is (especially art wise) but I've been waiting to see how it ends before giving a final verdict due to how important the arc is for the series' future.

Thanks for the replies. If I do have some time I might read My Hero from the very begginning otherwise I may start where the anime ended. By any chance does anyone know what chapter in the manga the Anime leaves off on?

I'm glad you've seen the light ahaha. The shibuya arc is great all because of the build up from previous arcs and the payoff we get is fantastic. The disjointed plot probably played a big role in the current arc. In fact I feel like the Shibuya arc made previous arcs like Hidden Inventory flash back and Origin of Obedience really good in hindsight.

My favorite arc is definitely Shibuya, but damn I also think Origin of Obedience is pretty good just for the Curse Bros fight.

Yeah I was still pretty behind, and had some time today to play catch up with the last 40ish chapters. And yet now with how things are, I wonder how much time it was left? Kinda feels like when Demon Slayer entered it's (lengthy) climactic fight.

It seems like the arc has already entered its climax so I assume we are gonna get a couple of chapters before it ends. This arc has been going on for over a year I believe.

The current arc is alright. Main strength is that it's sorta biggest climax the series had so far and shit is allowed to go down. But by now I would say it drags (binging probably would help) andit became increasingly unfocused/cluttered. I skipped the previous arc so can't really opine on that.

The anime ended on 190 but if you have time I would recommend reading the manga from the beginning as there are things throughout the manga that BONES cut from the anime (including some really important stuff in the Overhaul arc and the remedial course arc).

honestly I've only read up to where the anime is now (been holding out on reading updates) but frankly even Horishiki's art and panelling alone is worth reading the manga for, if you've seen the animation.

Animation obviously has some incredibly dope moments but the manga is sick as fuck

Yeah, the main reason I didn't continue (apart from not immediately loving it, as unfair as it is) was due to its monthly schedule. Even when I really enjoy a monthly manga (like Blue Exorcist, Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga), it's kinda hard for me to be there every single month, I'm bound to wait it out and forget stuff (I'm awful at that). With comics I read I don't have that big of a problem, but it's definitely there (really behind on the X-Men titles, for instance).

Interested to see what the anime would look like. The art is great, yeah, although I wish I liked the main characters' designs. I could see the anime being CG-based, which, eh... Although there has been a few good-looking CG animes, so hey.

Interesting. I wasn't really expecting the next DN. Like, that's a very unique, damn fun read (even if it's got quite a few flaws, especially as it went on) and I thought the same of Bakuman (again, with very similar problems regarding pacing, running for too long and stuff like that). So I'd be satisfied with an entertaining manga with great art and interesting concepts, which I see this has.

I might read the starting chapters in Shueisha's Manga Plus and, if I see I'm into them, I'll continue.

And yeah, the monthly schedule you as the reader and the authors as, well, the creators have to get used to. It can be such a different vibe to weekly manga. Good thing is that I'd have a nice amount of chapters to read, so I wouldn't really feel the drag!
