Students at the Florida high school where 17 people were shot dead last month are being asked to wear clear backpacks.

School officials have written to families of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High pupils outlining the plans as part of new security measures.

They said any student without a clear rucksack would be given one at no cost.

But some pupils say it does nothing to tackle the issue of gun control.

As well as introducing the backpacks, there will also be airport-style metal detectors and school visitors will be funnelled through special gates.

As you can imagine, this new policy isn't going over too well with students...

Personally I think this is pretty ridiculous.

Hmm. My son (4 yrs old) already uses one of those because he thought it was cool. We put stickers all over it. For some reason that makes this incredibly depressing move feel sort of hilarious to me on a personal basis.

It's almost laughable at the lengths they'll go just so they can keep their guns

Yeah, I don't think they have to worry about anyone stuffing an AR-15 into a backpack

Just keep weaving around the fact that semi-automatic rifles make killing so easy that one 19-year-old idiot with an AR-15 killed more people than the Unabomber, the Boston Marathon bombing, the Austin parcel bombings, the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and the Olympic Park bombing combined.

Why not just have check points and metal detectors like airports as well?

Clear or mesh backpacks were mandatory when I was in high school. That was shortly after Columbine even though it was on the other side of the country.

Can't say I saw the point in it.

Better than a laundry basket I guess... now clear laundry baskets... that's the real solution!

Growing up in south central LA in the 80's/90's this was normal policy along with metal detectors, armed police and strict mandatory school ID and opening all bags before entering every day felt like we where entering a prison. Sucks that the rest of the country is headed this way but its this or do something about guns and we know that's not happening.

For some reason this seems more odd to me than just having metal detectors. I guess because metal detectors is something I got use to being that I went to school in NY.

And it's funny cause this wouldn't have stopped the shooter

Didn't he just walk in? Wasn't even a student at the time.

When I went to middle school/high school, we were required to have clear or mesh backpacks. That was back in '97.

This is so stupid. The kid could just stay home the day of a shooting and come into the school guns blazing. So dumb.

Don't get angry. Why is everyone laughing at the school trying to minimise risk?

The principal and faculty are not politicians, they have no power to change gun laws. This change no matter how small is better than nothing and it's probably all they can do.

Instead of mocking the school maybe we should realise this is the limit of their power and therefore we need to apply more pressure onto the government.

Maybe because they had armed police officers that stood around but somehow clear backpacks will do a better job

I don't think depriving students of what little privacy they have on a school campus is really a good answer to any of the problems they are seeking to solve, especially when it's not proven to be effective.

How's that going to stop someone who's just gonna stroll right up to the metal detectors, shoot the guards and go on a rampage?

How's that going to stop someone who just waits around until end of the day when all the kids are leaving?

How about gun reforms? Too unrealistic?

It's not perfect but instead of ridicule we should have pity. It's sad, maybe the school feels let down by the government, maybe they too want stricter gun laws but sadly they are in the same position as the students and there's not much they can do.

Lol what. How does this solve anything. You think the guy who shot up the school was carrying around the guns in his backpack?

The middle school I went to had airport x ray machines, pat downs, clear bags amongst all other kinds of crazy stuff.
