I really like Classic Sonic in this game. Having the Drop Dash is fun and the level design is straight up better than Generations as far as I'm concerned, they reveal a lot of depth when you try to go for the collectibles. I had no idea there were two lower sections to Casino Forest until I intentionally let myself fall between the flippers to get some red rings.

So they threw classic Sonic level design philosophy away completely. Not they hadn't done it, but Jesus. It hurts me even more than I thought it would.

Not sure how you got that from that quote? Lots of classic Sonic levels have lower levels that you only reach when you fall in certain places.

Yes, but they're a lot more fluid than that. The discovery of the depth of a level wasn't entirely reliant on you wanting to see what's hidden, almost like a self-imposed challenge since the levels are so disjointed the only reason to explore is entirely artificial. In fact, falling was always the product of either a very compelling survival short-term reason (you have 0 rings, you can see rings below you) or you getting hit.

If it wasn't clear from Generations, Sonic Team doesn't know how to make Genesis-style gameplay anymore. If you want that, Mania awaits.

Also, Casino Forest is not your typical Sonic level anyway. There's literally one enemy in the entire thing, there's even a mission dedicated to killing it. It seems intentional that they wanted the level to be more about exploring and finding different routes than the the other levels, which are more standard "bop badniks and get to the end" type stages.

I'll probably be picking this up later in the week now that I'm finished with Odyssey for the moment and am a sucker for even mediocre Sonic games.

I figure I'll still manage to have some fun with it even if it is disappointing compared that what Uncolourations 4 could have been.

Great job OP.

In case anyone was interested, this is for iOS and Android.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle Launches Official Trailer With Release Dates!

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle now has a launch trailer with release dates for Android! Though the game is already released for the iOS, Android users will have to wait a little longer which is on the 16th of November to download the game. Since the game's soft launch back in September for the Philippines, the game is now preparing Android for an official launch.

As Sega continues to develop new games from their Sonic IP, we get games like Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. Though Sonic Forces is originally for the console, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle is made for the mobile platform to further promote their console game. Players may feel that this is just another platform racing game where you run endlessly amongst other players, but the graphics of the game still captures the speed of Sonic.

They may be a little too late to release this genre on the mobile platform; but hey, at least Sega did something and gave us a "new" Sonic game. If you are a die-hard Sonic the blue hedgehog fan, then Sonic Forces: Speed Battle should be in your mobile games list.

This game would be a lot more interesting to me if the "Save Sonic" theme was the major point of the game. But from what I've seen from previews, it seems like it's just a setup and you save him pretty quickly and get right back into the normal Sonic stuff.

Anyway, depending on the reception I may pick this up down the road. Nice OP.

I played a fair bit of this while it was in soft launch, but after checking the final version out it's hard to go back. They made some nice improvements with the presentation and visuals but the game balance is horrible now, every race is a lightning spamfest. Playing as the new characters isn't fun either because a player like me with lots of trophies will always be matched up with other high-level players who be using their already high-leveled characters that the low-leveled new characters have no chance against. They also neutered the progression by limiting you to 20 battle chests per day, so once you've done 20 races there's no point in playing any further. Alas, the game had some promise.

I'm debating on picking this up for Switch with my next paycheck. Probably won't play it until I go out of town for Thanksgiving though.

Do we know if the pre-order DLC will be available for sale if you don't pre-order?

Anyone going to the midnight launch for the game at Gamestop? Since they are having a midnight launch for Xbox One X they said they would just sell me Sonic Forces at midnight. What are the chances I am the only one at the midnight launch not getting an X but Sonic Forces instead?

Great OT im glad it didn't turn into some joke OT considering the negativity surrounding this game. Still kinda looking forward to the game even though it might not live up to unleashed(sonic levels) or generations

This sounds literally exactly like what happened with Runners two years ago. I liked that game a lot before the real launch tbh.

I should be getting this game sometime tomorrow and I already downloaded the Shadow costume...I have to say I am going into this expecting a mediocre game, which fine with me just as long there is some fun factor there though it will be painful going from Mario Odyssey to this.

I also am not looking forward to playing as the waste of space avatar character, Tails should have been the third playable character, and I just plan to rush through his stage or play mostly as Sonic in the tag team stage. I am also not interested in the poorly written story or Infinite.

A mediocre game is disappointing after the greatness of Colors and Generations, but that's still way above the unplayability of Sonic Adventure 1/2 and '06.

Fuck it, I'm all in.

Pffffft.

Knew it was possible with this system.

Can someone explain the Spring-Head Avatar? Does it count as a species or is it just a hat?

Got my copy today from Amazon. Honestly scared to play it considering all the bad reviews. This is coming from someone who adores both 2D and 3D Sonic gameplay. Sonic Team needs some serious restructuring if impressions are accurate.

Hoping to enjoy this more than Lost World at least. I hated that game.

How do you even get episode Shadow?
I THINK it's a pre-order bonus to everyone who buys the game at launch?

"As a thank you to fans, the Episode Shadow add-on will be FREE to everyone who purchases Sonic Forces, including those that have already pre-ordered the Physical Editions."

It sounds like it'll be a pack-in code included with launch copies.

Holy shit. That's kind of amazing. Though is al the hedgehog 'hair' that short?

Yeah, presumably to avoid having them look like straight Sonic recolors. You can either use Sonic hair, Shadow hair, or a sort of pokey hair (though strangely no Amy hair, even when creating a female hedgehog.)

I have it pre-ordered digitally on PS4. At what time would this be unlocking? Can I preload it?

Directly from Aaron Webber's Twitter:

Approx NA Sonic Forces console launch timing (these may change!):

PS4: Midnight Eastern
XB1: Midnight (local time)
Switch: Midnight Pacific

Ah nice, thanks for pointing out! So if I'm on the west coast on PS4, I'll be able to play at 9? Nice!

Oh for fuck sake.

Welp. I guess the eyelashes will have to tell the story then.

Been playing for 2 hours and a bit, and have been enjoying it. The story is cringeworthy as expected; think Shadow the Hedgehog but better production values and very disjointed.

Surprisingly not as disappointed as I expected. Modern and Classic Sonic stages are pretty and are enjoyable to play. The avatar levels are definitely worst stages so far. Pro-tip: Never use the electro-whip. It flings you forward a ton making you fear you'll fly off the edge of a stage. Level design is pretty middling but nothing as bad as Lost World.

I'm just genuinely surprised how this took 4 years of development. While a few of the stages (typically the Modern Sonic stages) get pretty good production values, a lot of the levels look like they're taking assets from Generations or Lost World. The game in general just looks like a worse-Generations visually. To be fair, I am playing the Switch version. Had a few frame drops in handheld mode during hectic scenes and a weird visual flicker in one stage, but docked is solid 30fps and looks decent. I'm just happy to have any new modern Sonic stages after Boom and Lost World.

My biggest issue so far is the jumps in 2D perspective and the homing attack in general. I feel like horizontal movement is either really fast or really slow, making some jumps in 2D kind of difficult. You'll either move an inch or fly across the screen missing the platform. Then with the homing attack, I've had times where I hit the button when the reticle is there but it just doesn't respond, making me fall to my death sometimes. These issues only pop up occasionally, but it feels like something that should have been dealt with in development.

I would play more, but I went to download the DLC and when I tried to open the game it told me it required an update to open (which isn't up yet), which essentially locks me out until later.

oh snap, I was messing with my character some more and realized they included Boom Sonic's actual taped-up shoes, but I only have the blue and purple variant unlocked right now.

I didn't know what this was, so I looked it up...

Was gonna make my character purple since purple's my favorite color. God damn it.
Took a look myself.

Going to keep pretending this is about recreating a JRPG trilogy within a character creator.

... And the Switch demo was a neat little thing to play. The poor impressions keep me from seriously checking it out but at least it's fun for a minute. Literally given that silly time constraint thing.
