Downloading right now but saw a stream of the game. That looked awful lol.

People thought it couldn't get any worse than Lost World 4 years ago and they come out with this. I hate Sonic Team man.

Apparently Sonic Team doesn't really have the same staff they had when they started working on Unleashed. Makes me wonder where Sonic will go in the future.

It's nearly 7 AM and I just beat it...

I never stopped smiling. :) This is... you know, I'm gonna need some time to word it properly because I have a lot to say. Needless to say, it s all good. This was a concentrated, no-frills, no-padding package of fun. The music was great, the graphics and art style are amazing, and I totally want to see Buddy in another game again.

Sonic Uneashed was the grand adventure, THE Sonic adventure, the epic, the best Sonic game IMO, but it wasn't perfect. This game cuts all the fat, with little compromise. No, you can't drift and it feels more like colors at times... but Colors done right!

Well done Sonic Team, well done Iizuka. Don't listen to the haters, you did a great job.

Now I will finally read what other people think, but I will know what is and what is not BS.

The game isn't glitchy, it's not unpolished, it is what it is... current Sonic, short and sweet, in a nice package.

...I can't believe I bought a One X for this game... but I certainly do not regret it!

And I haven't even gotten a chance to talk about the immense replay value!

Damn, I need some sleep though...

Lost World was a strange game that I liked more than most it seems. I really liked the life and vibrancy of the visuals and the new control scheme was a great prototype for something to be refined in a sequel.

Instead we get Forces and Lost World is thrown away. I still.think I'll find some fun with Forces. The only Sonic games I've hated have been fundamentally broken.

I'm so close to buying it for my Switch, I've always seen the 3D Sonic games as "Fast Food" titles, quick play, enjoy them at the time but nothing that sticks with you. Am I on the right track with this one?.

Also are there side missions like previous ones or is it just level to level gameplay?

Sorry to chew your digital ear off!

There are side missions, secret levels, and extra levels that are completely optional. You also have daily missions and S ranks give you bonus unlocks... there's a LOT of replay value in here. As for it sticking with you... I can't answer that. This is my type of Sonic game, but I know You might not be. Also, I have heard some issued with performance on Switch with half the framerate, so you might want to read up on that with someone more learned than I on that version.

Sounds good. Framerate doesn't really bother me too much compared to the convenience of being able to take it with me and play it handheld, as a father of 3 with little TV time lately it's always a bonus to play more than 20 mins a day haha

You're certainly right on the replay value. I won't be surprised if my activity log ends up showing at least 10+ hours with this.

As for Switch performance it's been fine in docked and handheld. Anyone who was able to put up with previous 30 FPS Sonic games on consoles will have no problem.

Personally I'll take the most mediocre Boost game over Lost World any day. There's just something off to me about a game where Sonic has a run button, loses all momentum when he turns, and uncurls out of his double jump. It is interesting how polarizing it is though, seems like there are as many people who despise it as there are people who want to see it iterated on.

Got this for 1€ + an old cod game I paid 8€ for. Thanks gamestop.

Colours is one of my favourite 3d platformers ever and I loved Gens/liked Unleashed, so I'm probably gonna like it at the very least even if what I saw felt a bit off. Anyway, I guess you can't go wrong for that price, worst case I'm gonna sell it for half its launch price and it'd even be profitable for me lol

In terms of beating the main story, it'll take 3-4 hours. If you're not interested in replaying levels to complete missions and get all the collectibles I wouldn't recommend this game at $40.

Jesus, that's awful. I mean, at least it's $40 but I'm looking at this from a, "It's been 6 years since Generations and this is what you have to show for it? A shorter version of it with blander levels?"

This makes me so sad. I was so excited for a legitimate follow-up to Colors and Generations for a while.

It took me around 6 hours to just beat the game. So for me, it's Generations length without the padding. Generations had a lot of padding with missions and keys, but in Forces, ALL side missions are completely optional.

Colors and Generations weren't that much longer, especially if you take out the filler acts and challenge missions that were made post-game content in Forces. I mean yea this definitely could have been larger, but it's obvious there were some development troubles. This is not a game that took 4 years to make.

Yeah, they weren't long games. But they also had more interesting art design, better designed levels, etc. And they didn't even bother to try and fix the issues with Generations. How does classic Sonic still not feel anything like classic Sonic? Isn't that the whole freaking point? The sublime Mania just comes out and Sega thinks having a clunky rock-like controlling classic Sonic is still okay.

This series has tested me as a fan. 06 was trash. Unleashed was half of a good game hindered by a completely trash second half. But this just feels so lazy. And yeah, there seemed to have been development issues. But this is Sonic. The series deserves AAA awesome shit. It's so depressing.

Digital Foundry has a video up:
PC overview will come later.

- Xbox One X support is present, resolution varies on a per-stage basis (lowest is 1080p, highest is 1800p), runs @60FPS
- Xbox One version runs at 720p @60FPS with screen tearing and minor dips
- No Pro support whatsoever currently; it's identical to base PS4
- PS4 version runs at 1080p @60FPS with no screen tearing and no dips
- If the game is kept in sleep mode for extended periods, frame drops will begin to persist, with the only fix being to completely restart the system (PS4 only)
-Switch version runs at 720p @30FPS with dramatically less detail depending on the stage, John recommends getting any other version if you possess the means

EDIT: Since I'm here, how are folks liking the game thus far?

Just finished the game in one sitting. Took me five hours in total but I didn't play a lot of the side missions. I'm a massive lover of 3D Sonic - aside from 06, I've enjoyed every single one of them to varying degrees with Generations being my favourite. There will be unmarked spoilers so read at your own risk.

That said, my immediate impression is that this is probably my second least favourite of the 3D titles. It's a real shame because I can usually put aside the main flaws and find something to really enjoy but I can't look past the main flaws I have with this game. All three gameplay styles have major problems with controls. The Sonics somehow feel worse than in Generations which boggles my mind. Classic Sonic still feels totally wrong compared to the 2D titles but the addition of the Drop Dash salvages his gameplay in my eyes. It's the Modern Sonic and Avatar stages which I really found frustrating. Jumping in 2D sections is the worst - there are many precise jumps you need to make and the characters drop like a rock. Boosting feels useless a lot of the time because you can easily fall straight off of a stage. It feels like a lot of the tools were implemented for players who play the game repeatedly and learn how best to make use of them rather than create an enjoyable first time playing experience. I know Unleashed and, to a lesser extent the other Boost games felt like this but here the problems alongside the uninspired level design (homing attack!) really made some of the stages a chore to play through.

Classic Sonic was the highlight of the game for me. The Death Egg recreation made me feel like I was playing Generations 2 and was probably my favourite level. Casino Forest and Eggman's Fortress were nice too (The Scrap Brain gravity wheels were a fun addition.) Now this is an obviously personal gripe but the biggest disappointment was probably the music. I'm not a fan of the lyrical tunes the Avatar stages had and most of Modern Sonic's tracks sounded too similar for my tastes. I'll have to give them another listen but, once again, I enjoyed Classic Sonic's music a lot more. The retro but not actually retro style they had worked rather well personally (But Classic Green Hill's music is still awful.)

I've never been one to hate on Sonic's friends, in fact I quite enjoy the vast majority of them. It was definitely nice to see them again but tbf, none of them did anything worthwhile. But I'll take them reduced to being useless and present over them being completely absent (please come back Blaze.) Infinite was completely useless and disappears without a trace once you beat him for a third time. He had no backstory, no connection to the characters and is ultimately irrelevant to the story's climax. I did like that he didn't betray Eggman like every other Sonic game ever but it was a shame he didn't really do anything. The less said about the Avatar the better but fuck him - the only thing I found enjoyable was picking the most ridiculous outfit and deadpan eyes for my own amusement. Everything else about them was awful and I hope they don't make a return.

As for the boss fights - Zavok and Metal Sonic were fine, nothing offensively bad but not too memorable (The Metal Sonic music was amazing though - but I've been listening to it for months now so that was already known!) Infinite's first fight was pretty great. It had shades of Lost World in the cylinder tube you fought on which I enjoyed. His second fight was garbage - I had no idea what was going on for the most part and the screen effects during Phantom Ruby shenanigans were obnoxious. His third fight was a meh SA2 Sonic vs. Shadow like fight - nothing too special. I Just want to point out that there were no fights with either Shadow or Chaos which was complete bullshit. Like, why even bother bringing Chaos back if you're not going to use him? Hopefully Episode Shadow has something addressing this, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Now the real highlight here was the final boss fight. Holy shit, I was not prepared. It's actually a really fun three stage fight where you use Classic Sonic, the Avatar and then all three against varying forms of a Death Egg Robo. The music was great and the boss had some sweet attacks. At one point, he destroys the panels you're standing on which really caught me out (multiple times...) The final stage is yet another Colours final boss style fight but I loved it all the same. Definitely the highlight of the game for me.

Ultimately, I'm probably not going to replay any levels or play the bonus missions simply because I don't feel like playing with those controls again. I thought Lost World was a great game with a Sonic who controlled differently, but enjoyably once you got the hang of it. Here? I'm just not invested enough to collect red rings, unlock more ridiculous gear (There are THREE seperate GAMER hats and I hate it) or get S ranks. I'll definitely play Episode Shadow at some point though. Overall, It's a shame since I've been greatly looking forward to this one but I just hope Sonic Team doesn't double down on this game's ideas for the next title. I just want Generations 2 man.

Just beat it after 3-4 hours. Still have to do the side stories and missions. Didn't like it. Hated Lost World and would put this under that.

Avatar controlled terribly and his levels were either mediocre as hell or somethin gimmicky straight outta LW. Somehow Modern Sonic controls worse than he has in any other boost game and none of his levels here come close to anything from Unleashed, Colors, or Gens in terms of quality. Same goes for Classic Sonic and Generations. Everything was just painfully mediocre. Surprisingly Tag Team levels were the better ones in the game. Nice concept reminiscent of Heroes.

Don't understand why Classic Sonic is here beyond $$$. He serves no purpose in the story, barely interacts with no one besides Tails, it's just weird.

Also Chaos and Shadow have no boss fights. Beaten in cutscenes lol. Why even bring them back???

There's were some pros for me but gameplay ain't one of em. Liked the music and graphically it looked and ran fine, (switch version btw). Story was dull. Wasn't even funny or edgy like Shadow the hedghog. Just dull and forgettable with a very low budget.

This game just wasn't for me I guess. I know some fans will enjoy it tho so don't let my negativity stop you. Will probably be a very mixed game like Lost World.

The game is finally out on Steam! You can download it RIGHT NOW! :D

Also, here's the Persona 5 costume DLC on Steam. It's free.

EDIT: You have to install the DLC separately in order to "own" them on Steam, as they doesn't seem to come bundled with the game. They're all free, and for some reason, the Persona 5 DLC isn't listed on the main page, but you can get it with that link above.

Yeah, I can definitely see this being a love or hate game among the community. At the very least though, no one can say it is buggy, or unpolished. Put me in the love camp though, it does a lot of things right which I will elboarate on tomorrow.

Because huelen needs her shuteye, good night.

Lump It's free for everyone on Steam, too. In fact, it doesn't even come bundled with your pre-order, you gotta acqurie them (for free) separately. Maybe not a mistake?

Episode Shadow is 3 stages long but after beating it you also get the ability to play as Shadow in all of Modern's stages.
Oh..... Okay I'll buy it. Man, I know in my heart I should buy the PC version but I feel like this game would be perfect on the Switch. Is there a graphical downgrade on the Switch? Any performance issues?

30 fps, not 60. Huge graphics downgrade. Look for the Digital Foundry impressions. But if you want it on the Switch it still works.

PC version is looking to be a mess currently, framerate issues in cutscenes (22~ish fps), wonky framerate limiter (at first it was working fine for me, but now using the 60fps setting locked the game at 32-ish or so, while unlocked runs at 120+), and many crashing reports (some like me crash as early as the first stage, in the sandfall, others crash after a few missions).

Based on reports, the crash in the first stage (sandfall) is caused by the lack of SSSE 3 or SSE 4.1 (most likely the latter), since only users with old AMD CPUs are getting this crash.
Crashes in later missions are caused by something else though. Users are reporting that these don't happen if they're not connected to the internet.

Framerate issues in cutscenes are looking to be pretty common though, framerate limiter issues not so common, but there's still quite a few reports about that one.
Personally my graphics drivers are not fully up to date, I'm on 388.00 while the most recent is 388.13, but I probably won't bother trying anything since I'm not gonna be able to play because of my old CPU anyway (unless this is patched, but I'm gonna upgrade CPU in a few months anyway).

So I put in an hour this morning during my free period and it's been okay so far.

I've laughed out loud multiple times at the absurdity of some of the lines they've had the characters say, the edge is real.

Wish the stages were longer (I just beat Egg Dragoon) I've been coasting by in stages no problem.

I mean if it's due to old hardware it seems like an isolated issue, if it's happening on recent hardware and is widespread then yeah, it's a bad port. You also stated your drivers are out of date.
You misunderstood my post, there's 2 different crashing issues, there's one that only happens in a specific location due to outdated hardware (sandfall in the first stage), and another that happens because the user is connected to the internet, people are reporting this one is happening after one of the avatar stages or so.

Game just received a patch though, so let's see if there's changes.

EDIT: They fixed the online crash issue.
There's still the framerate limiter issue, from what I saw, the 30fps setting is locking the game to 22~ish fps, and the 60fps setting is locking the game to 32~ish or so. While unlocked is fine, this is likely what causes the heavy stuttering on cutscenes, since those are likely locked at 30fps (which brings up the wonky framerate limiter).

Seeing as they fixed the online crash issue much faster than I expected, hopefully they'll fix it soon.

EDIT: So... running the game in big picture mode fixes the framerate limiter.

Quick question: How far into the game before I can create a character, and are all the customization items unlocked from the start (or do I need to unlock some by playing through the game)?
