I'm so torn...I wanna get this game, but I can't seem to bring myself to pay full price. I've already sold my Wii U, so I can't play it on there right now, but I'd love to play this again.

TFW after several--and I do mean SEVERAL tries--you finally nail down the rhythm and jumps of Bopopolis.

I've been playing this slowly and really enjoying it. Normally with games like this or Rayman Legends I grind levels until I 100% them, but I've just been picking up my Switch and beating a level or two here or there without worrying about finding all the secrets. It's such a great game so far. I'm kind of worried about the difficulty when I play it with my girlfriend because I've even had a tough time on some stuff like the World 2 boss, but maybe we'll do a new save in Funky mode.

Platform Problems.

Guys, PLATFORM PROBLEMS!

irlPtDz.jpg

Pack it up other developers, platforming doesn't get any better than this. They should have named the stage Platform Perfection.

Anyone who says the controls are unresponsive after playing this level is wrong. DEAD wrong! Once you get into the groove of it all it's so good. SO. GOOD!

Yeah, this stage proves Retro are the masters of the 2D platformer. No one else is in the same league.

Can anybody with the cart version tell me what Switch firmware update version number comes on the cart?
Pretty sure it was the most up to date version, 1.01 if I remember correctly.

I was pleasantly surprised when it didn't need to download any patches when I put it in for the first time!

I know opinions and all that .... But how did someone play this and score it a 5? I mean what the heck.

100% yes!

They suck or they lack patience.

The game demands precision and that you're aware of your surroundings pretty much at all times. You need to take it slow. If you end up rushing it only leads to frustration and then you'll inevitably start blaming the controls.

Basically, they lack skill which leads to rushing, which then leads to frustration and "these controls suck!" That's the only sane reason why someone would (unfairly) mark this game a 5.

Platform Problems is being the best pure platforming stage in the game, Bopopolis is a fun ride and all but 5-K is magic.

got to the world 3 boss, so far I'm getting all the K-O-N-G letters for each level before I move on but I'm leaving the K-levels for later

Funky mode is great. +1 would recomend. If you really like the game and go for 200% you will spend enough time precision platforming and speedrunning later.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I thought DK's animation was supposed to be with a Switch and not a 3ds.

Starting World 3. Getting the hang of this, but seriously the bosses are kind of annoying - all about memorizing patterns old-school style. And seriously the times that I have missed a vine because I forgot to hold down the grab button ... I haven't been white-knuckled playing a game in a while, and get stoked when I hit a checkpoint
Besides the boss fights being god awful, probably my only other complaint would be that the grab button mechanic is terrible.

High Tide Ride is awesome. I love how the camera angle changes. Also, the creativity of this game is off the charts.

I like this game. I really want to love it, but I feel like there are way too many incidents of stuff like this happening:

Could have sworn I was holding climb. The controls just feel like they're one tweak away from perfection to me.

What controller layout is everybody using, by the way? Is one considered better than the others?

Just hit Bopopolis; much easier than I remembered, but that's what happens when you don't have to learn the bounce mechanics as you go. I remember how the first time I played the game in 2014, it took me ages just to reliably make the first bounce. This time the entire stage took me fewer than a dozen attempts, and half of those deaths were simply incurred by looking for roll-jump shortcuts instead of actual mistakes. If anything, I played it better than I used to, skipping as many bounces as possible by lunging ahead with the roll jump. This time, I only failed once at the flying penguin section and as soon as I cleared it, I nailed the rest of the stage on the first try. It helped that I knew what was coming, I suppose, but for a stage that moves so quickly it's generally quite readable for players who are reacting as they go. The only section here that ever felt trial-and-error was the flying penguins, if you don't realize that lingering with the high bounce sets you too far back and doesn't give you enough distance to push forward, so it was useful to remember how that worked.

What a great stage. I cleared it nice and early this time (as soon as I reached the end of World 2 with a full bank of 99 lives), and one thing the experience showed me was that its early placement in the game is precisely where it belongs, as clearing it teaches you so much about the finer mechanics of the game, trains you to input them reliably, and gives you an insight into how you should be thinking about forward momentum in any stage if you're playing for speed. Given its difficulty, Bopopolis might seem front-loaded next to all the other unlockable stages, but now I'm convinced it's precisely where it should be; it couldn't have shown up any earlier or later.

I honestly don't get how the boss fights are "godawful". Do people just want them to be mario bosses (3 hits and they're done)? They're certainly miles above the SNES games boss fights.

I mean that just looks like it's all on you. Either you're holding for climb or not. There's not even timing involved.

Celeste is an interesting companion to this game. Both this and Celeste are super-hard platformers, but they each have different flows to them. DK's level design is (typically) more relaxed, featuring more areas where you can simply run (or swim) around and explore, and the checkpoint system reflects this.

Celeste demands perfection from the player. As the level progress, especially when you play through the B and C-side levels, the game tests your ultimate understanding of every nuance to the game's controls. Meanwhile, the checkpoint system is aware of this and lets you retry every screen at a moment's notice.

Both games are some of the best platformers in the industry, imo. DKC TF is unparalleled in its combination of world building with pure, tough platformering. Celeste though weaves its relentless difficulty into its relatable and lovely narrative regarding the main character's depression and anxiety.

Best generation for 2D platformers right now!

That's the only moment in the entire game where I felt a bit frustrated, as this happened to me a couple times as well. I thought I was holding the grip button, but heck, maybe I wasn't, so I'm not wholly convinced it was the game's fault.

Well, you can swear all you want but you clearly were not holding the button. DK only collides with the wall when climb is not pressed. That's science.
