I'm a little bit mixed on these games.
They look fantastic and it's cool seeing Kanto in HD for the first time.
Having a local co-op option is brilliant and it's cool that you can play the game with one joy con.
One brand new Pokémon is a nice surprise.

I'm not keen on being limited to only Kanto Pokémon (I was thinking about using an Eeveelution team in the Eevee version)
I'm not keen on the very simplified catching mechanics.
I'm not keen on wild Pokémon being seen in the overworld as it ruins the surprise that random encounters offer.
It looks like this is just an updated version of Yellow's Kanto which means no Sevii Islands and that's very disappointing.

I still think that these games will be fun and it's nice to know that Gen 8 is coming next year.

I already feel like I'm going to be punished for not having got into the Pokémon Go craze because I didn't like the gameplay, and this borrowing the capture mechanic from that game isn't something that I'm a fan of, even if the rest does seem much more fleshed out.

But I guess I'm not the target audience for this game. I'll wait for more news (Pokemon Box compatibility?), reviews, and maybe a price drop.

How does levelling work? Or is that still unknown?
Unknown. But we know levels are in, and you can battle trainer the same way you always could, so you can probably level via them at least (it's how I did all my leveling in previous games). But yeah, taking out the option to battle random pokémon means they need to have a vs seeker or something pretty early on in the game to allow for repeat trainer battles, I think.

You all understand why I brought up "what defines a generation?" now, eh? :P

It is double edged. It is great early game when you can quick grind your low levels by having one bigger pokemon who is strong to whatever is in the area and then rotate out lowbies but later when you are just trying to find something with limited time and getting jumped every few steps by stuff that is so low it does nothing for you.

It is like in mmos when you get swarmed constantly by grey levels when you just want to get somewhere.

Now if random battles scaled to match what was in your group no matter where you are that would be different. At least xp would be worth it or the risk would be worth popping repels for

LMAO this thread

People calling to boycot this but stayed silent when remake after remake got announced. It's not even a mainline game.

What a load of hypocrisy.

If the 2019 game is the console rpg that some of us have been waiting for, and not just handheld pokemon with a prettier layer of paint on it, then I'm perfectly fine with this.Buuuut If the 2019 game is just like this, but the normal new region and gen of pokemon, and whatever else, then I'm waving goodbye to any plans of maybe getting a Switch. I just don't have an interest in playing through this decade old gameplay loop at this point

Wow.
So even on a PS360 grade hardware, Gamefreak cant be bothered to make a game world on par with what we found on... PS2 ?
Top down view again ?
Top down views aren't inherently outdated, they're a stylistic choice. And if you think that trailer looks like a PS2 game, you should go play some PS2 games because your nostalgia is making you crazy.

Honestly the most surprising thing about this whole reveal is me learning that there are crazy people who don't think gen 1 Pokémon are the best

Gen 1 pokemon is oversaturated and have been here for the longest time. Why are people crazy for not thinking they are the best? Theres 800 odd pokemon in the whole series meaning theres a wide range that isnt available. Not everyone likes the OG 151.

You don't get to decide what is or isn't a mainline title, though. GF does, and they're calling it a mainline title.

Of course I can decide what to call it. It doesn't matter what a company says in their pr, we know what is and isn't something. If this is the route the Pokemon company takes the series, then the main line Pokemon games are simply no more and sun/moon were the last of their kind. The fact this game even has Go in the title is very telling of what it's supposed to be building off of .

I agree, same thing with the 3DS having a top-down zelda when even the 64 could use a real camera.

Its almost as if its a design choice and not a hardware limitation.

I didnt said visually, I said in term of gameworld.
Because you know on PS2 you had JRPGs like Dragon Quest VIII or Final Fantasy XII.
Maybe it's time tim Pokemon to stop playing like a 2D game. More than ever.

Ye I normally level by battling wild Pokémon especially early on in the game.

You can put a hat on Pikachu! You can put glasses on Eevee! How can anyone hate this game?

Asking you to choose between the two is pretty evil, though.

The fact that it's a "Pocket Monsters" game instead of a "Pokémon" game is more telling.

People believed that there wouldn't be online ? Man.
I mean, multiple outlets, including very reliable ones like Serebii, reported there wouldn't be at first because they were only going on the best information they had at the time. And then there was a lot of confusion and back and forth over whether stuff was mistranslated or not.

Now, at the current time, it seems most parties involved have settled on the likely event that these games will have online and anything saying otherwise was a mistranslation and that's all been cleared up, but there's very good reason people were confused/skeptical. It wasn't pulled out of thin air or anything.

Having not played Pokemon Go, I can't honestly say how I feel about the changes. If the core battling is there, and the overworld is good and fun to explore I'll probably have a great time regardless.

Irrespective of my personal take, this seems likely to be a sure-fire success. If they do a pack-in Switch SKU for Christmas it'll be carnage in stores trying to get hold of one.

This is also another point I haven't understood. If the past twenty years (or anything past gen 1) didn't excite Go players enough to get the games then why would the 2018 title suddenly convince them to get the one in 2019 when it goes back to its traditional play style?

Like all Nintendo's mobile titles the aim is to give people a taste of their IP and get them interested in the main series on their gaming hardware. Pokemon Go got a lot of people interested in Pokemon again. Let's Go is trying to migrate them to a more complex experience that brings the traditional structure with the more simplified mechanics of Go. If they enjoy that then perhaps they will be interested in the full fat Pokemon experience that will come with generation 8 in 2019.

I think people are underestimating just how huge the Pokemon Go audience is. If they can capture even a sliver of that market with the Switch games then they will make more money than they ever have before. It's flippant to say that because none of the previous core games achieved anything close to Go's success, that there is no point trying. Nintendo is always trying to bring new and lapsed players to it's IPs.

Oh well glad I wasn't there during that time of uncertainty.
