Thanks for the thread, Jaw!
I love classic Capcom, they're far and away my favorite publisher. That being said, they do frustrate me a bit, hear me out... Several other publishers take advantage of their classic catalogs, whether it's Nintendo via Virtual Console (not counting the Switch -- not sure what's going on there), Sega with all sorts of releases across platforms, and SNK who seemingly release their back catalog every console generation. Also being a fan of those other companies, I buy some of these classics, and thoroughly enjoy them. But I love no other catalog as I do Capcom's
CPS-2 library. I probably enjoy
every single CPS-2 game.
So, why not make an effort to release the games on a current gen console and/or PC? It is just too much of a technical challenge? A perceived lack of demand (and therefore, not an expected return on investment)? Lack of funds? Personnel?
I understand that some of the games might be stuck behind licensing issues -- obviously, the Marvel games come to mind, and the Dungeons and Dragons games might be in the same boat. But what about the rest of the games? In particular, what about Super Turbo, a game for which people have been clamoring for, for a long time now? You've got people doing all sorts of crazy things to get a good version of Super Turbo -- including building
CPS-2 "super-guns." (essentially, consolized CPS-2's). But instead of giving an awesome arcade perfect (or close to it) port, they keep doing things nobody asked for. Nobody asked for HD Remix. Nobody asked for Ultra SF2. (Well, "nobody" might be my hyperbole talking out of frustration, but you get the point...).
As for the technical challenge, I'm not so sure that's a valid argument. They were able to bring in Vampire Hunter/Savior last gen, and those are CPS-2 games. They also brought Marvel Super Heroes and Marvel vs Capcom (1). They've done Dungeons and Dragons re-releases (although for some bizarre reason, only the PS3 Japanese version was done by Capcom themselves, I believe the other worldwide releases were done by other people).
In any case, I still have all of these older consoles I can plug in to enjoy all the amazing Capcom releases. But for this discussion, if anyone has any insight into Capcom's development priorities/schedules/goals when it comes to classic releases, it will be very welcome! Thanks :-)
