This reveal most captures the essence of Halo 1, which is interesting. Every other Halo reveal has been a wild tangent. I like it—but I wonder closely they'll hew to the past. Reverence only gets you so far. Though if they take a similar route to something like BotW, recommitting to the series' original vision while opening up what is possible with contemporary technology, this could be something special.

I think it's a total reboot, and so it should be.

It's a Halo 5 sequel set 2 years after. Reboot gameplay wise? Quiet possibly. I could see it giving chief some abilites to his core set such as VISR and Sprint will likely stay giving the larger map size shown but I'd say the Halo 5 abilities are probably being toned down. Clamber might remain but ground pound and shoulder charge will likely be out the door.

That said the big worry for me is nailing the core Halo feel away from the Blam! engine. I'd love to know how slipspace was built.

I expect from a gameplay standpoint we will likely operate out of a Base and while exploring you can call in warthogs via pelican drop and suhch.

I'm not sure what the fervour is for the graphics, it was all cutscenes. Don't we really need to see an uncut gameplay sequence to have any realistic idea of what it's going to look like? I mean, we've seen nothing of the actual game in all fairness.

We don't know other than Halo 6. Unlikely it's anything more than a Halo title in an open world with a narrative and the option to explore should the desire take you. Think Far Cry meets Halo. But that's just an assumption

All we know is that it's the next mainline entry in the Halo series and that it will follow up on H5's story but in a way that will make it easy for new players to jump in.

It's definitely going to be an FPS.

Thanks for the explanation!

It wasn't cutscenes at all

It was in engine but just a demo of what the engine can do. If it can do that at 60fps on XB1X remains to be seen but as far as an engine showcase it looked very very good. I guess one of the main reasons behind building the engine was scalability so XB1 to XB1X to Monster PC's will all get scaled experiences.

When I saw this my first thought was 'Halo Battle Royale' game. If it's an open world thing then that could still be the case.

I wonder what 343 has against numbers in their titles.

They tried to sell halo 5 as just Halo: Guardians at first
before they were made to tack the 5 on.
Now they have Halo Infinity and have left the 6 off.

Hey 343, the numberless entries in the halo franchise always sell the worst, so enjoy.

That's the problem. For someone who doesn't follow every bit of gaming news, this title sounds like some sort of halo RPG = not interested
Master Chief on the cover + big marketing campaign.

Exactly what ArchedThunder said. We barely have any info on the game. People will get to know these things, once they feel confident enough to tell us more and when the marketing campaign starts. To think that people will ignore this game, just because it doesn't have a meaningless number is kinda foolish, in my eyes.

Halo 3 is still the biggest gaming event, for me.

The hype going into that game was NUTS. The brilliant marketing campaign, seeing "Finish the fight" ads EVERYWHERE.

Push this game heavy, master cheif at the forefront and a promise of a return to Halo of old.

I can't wait to see more of this.

There is so much confusion related to whether this is some online thing or a proper Halo sequel (which it clearly is based on the Halo Waypoint article).

I really think they should have gone with Halo 6: Infinite, but hopefully they can get the messaging right before release.

Halo 5 was such a departure from 4, narrative speaking, that they stopped referring to the story arc as the "forerunner saga" rather than trilogy. Infinite looks to be yet another massive departure, so continuing to slap numbers on - implying direct sequels - woild be underselling imo.

Was that confirmed or hinted at somewhere? Presumably they are mixing the formula up in some significant way though, or..?

The title and trailer definitely smacked of a soft reboot much more than a straight sequel.
It's following the plot of Halo 5, they just want to move away from numbers.

The solution to that would be actually committing to a story arc.
Didact is the bad guy!
No wait it's Cortana!
I wonder who it will be now.

4 narratively was fine. If they had continued that thread and had the didact come back but with more power that would have been great. Instead they had... Locke?

I'm thrilled with the new artstyle. Halo 4 and 5 were rather cluttered visually and the darker style drowned out a lot of the colours. Even CE:A, which was more vibrant as a whole, balanced its colours poorly resulting in something that's a little incoherent visually. This was particularly a problem with enemy varients as they're indicated through colour, Orange and Red Grunts suddenly didn't seem so distinct and they would often blur in with the environment. Prometheans are the worst culprit of this, their colour scheme is often the exact same as the environments, which is to say dull grey.

Halo Infinite though? Clear, vibrant colours and beautiful artstic direction. I'm excited for Halo again.

It's interesting that they chose Halo: Combat Evolved for the game tag on YouTube and not Halo 5. Maybe this is a reboot for the franchise?

The Didact and his robot dogs and bug men made out of caveman juice took the mystery that was the very core of the Halo franchise and turned it into a complete joke.
It was very far from "fine." It was the worst thing they could have done with the franchise. Locke And His Shitty Friends can easily be tossed aside to be forgotten, but there's no getting away from what they did to Forerunners.

They can't reboot it without finishing the story.
Unless they have master chief go through a slispace time travel portal, land on the original halo ring, and try to undo everything he had done to that point behind the scenes

Not really.
There were no Warrior Servants, no War Sphinxes, nothing really far sci fi except for the Composer. So they didn't really wreck anything, the enemies they put in were there only to be enemies that would be interesting to shoot at and had nothing to do with the narrative.
Which makes sense, as spartans wouldn't be any sort of match for Forerunner Warrior-Servants or War Sphinxes that can destroy entire cities.

It's not a reboot, as it's taking place 2 years after the events of 5. I'd imagine they're looking to refresh the way it plays, the story will refer to what happened in 5 though.
To what extent I wonder though? There hasn't been a whisper of Spartan Locke and they've been emphasising a focus on Chief.

With any luck the intro shows spartan locke put into an escape pod and flung towards a sun. Cortona then suddenly fixes herself and kills all of the prometheans in a big blast .

Wrap up the story from 5 quickly and make the rest the game a open world co-op. I want to see 15 Spartans darting around in Warthogs darting around the landscape exploring.
