So how are the characters? Thinking of starting H'anit or Cyrus

I picked Tressa, the merchant kiddo. She's pretty cute and amusingly sneaky, plus I love that you can buy stuff off npcs. One of them in her town sold a very powerful dagger and very useful armour with a dodge chance.

Seems she might be worth keeping around for thar very purpose alone. Who knows what kind of rare gear you could find for sale?

Oh, I was under the impression that was only to turn those features down, not up?

Only down yes, but the default is the "before" look and I think it's still in the game.

And I can understand liking DoF and vignetting, but glowing characters is a bit strange to me lol. Reminds me of the early bloom days.

One thing I'm liking is how the field abilities of each character seem to really be quite useful. As Primrose I allured a spice merchant into following me and he basically became a free SP-dispenser during battles; it made Olberic's Chapter 1 battle so much easier than my first try with it as I was able to use the entire range of skills I had between Olberic and Primrose. Olberic's challenge skill seems to be most useful in contextual situations but it's definitely a good way to get some easy 'tough' battles for XP.

Thanks for the tip as well! When I dive into the main game I'll be trying to recruit Tressa ASAP (which will be easy considering she's close to Olberic's town on the world map), that purchase ability sounds pretty useful.

Oh well if the before version is still the default in the game, that's cool then! I instantly fell in love with how artistic it felt.

Cyrus is my personal pick for the main playthrough, so I won't play through his intro until closer to launch. Played Ophilia in the meantime, and her story is very interesting as well, and has some great characterisation.

Honestly, every story I've played so far (3 out of 8) has been great, with Olberic's being the worst of the three (but still quite good).

Good to know. When my demo ran out after recruiting Olberic I was making my way to recruit her.

I like the scholars skill, but his story so far is dull as hell

I just want to see how the overall structure of the game is, I'm not sure if I'm a fan of it being 8 individual 10 hour stories.

I don't know why they didn't have it out for the announcement.

I literally turned on my switch and logged into my nintendo account just to download the first demo after that trailer and realised that they'd taken it down.

Now I can't be assed anymore.
Yeah, waiting for Thursday made no fucking sense. Nothing even releases on Thursdays.

Anyway to see where sidequests are on the map? I picked up a couple side quests but no idea where or what to do for them? I see them listed in the journal but that is it.

Okay.... as much as i like the gameplay and setting, and will still play it day one.... the characters interactions are pretty much inexistant... they accompany you on your quest, but in every scene of their story they're still alone... no effort made in that departement whatsoever!
They don't have any excuse, they did it 20 years ago in seiken densetsu 3, i don't see why they couldn't do it here....

I mean it's the whole gimmick of the game, going through the story and meeting the eight characters, but what's the point if they never really interact?

Started with Cyrus and managed to recruit 2 characters in just over 2 hours.
hSwdKqv.png

Cyrus
Starting Class: Scholar
Starting Proficiencies: Staff, Fire/Ice/Lightning magic
Path Action: Scrutinize - gathers information from NPCs. Usually a paragraph of description that leads into a hidden item, a quest objective, a store discount, or nothing.
Talent: Study Foe - unlocks 1 unknown weakness from every enemy at the start of combat
First support skill under the Scholar class reduces random encounter rate.

His first chapter was dull, but he's an absolute AOE monster provided you can keep his SP topped up.

Tressa
Starting Class: Merchant
Starting Proficiencies: Spear, Bow, Wind magic
Path Action: Purchase - gives you access to discounted items or sometimes early/unique access to specific equipment.
Talent: Eye for Money - seems to add a random amount of money to your party funds every time you zone or every X number of steps.
First support skill under the Merchant class gives a 25% chance to not consume an item in battle. Support skills are partywide.

Tankier than she looks.

Ophilia
Starting Class: Cleric
Starting Proficiencies: Staff, Light magic
Path skill: Guide - basically the same Primrose's Allure or H'anit's Capture, recruits an NPC you can summon in battle.
Talent: Summon - summons your Guided NPC in battle.
Didn't level her up enough to get her first Cleric support skill.

Starts with single target light damage and a partywide heal. Kind of underwhelming and the AI of the summoned NPC is random.

This demo is awesome because each player will experiment differently the game.
Like the E3 2016 demo of BOTW when every preview was different about the Plateau.

THIS is a huge great commercial way to sell the game

Discussions between characters confirmed in full game.
YES they interact. That's how you will learn more about them =)
But not in demo

I just finished my 3 hours of fun. I started with H'aanit, met Therion then met Primrose. Primrose's story seems the same as the first demo, I didn't get to finish it but I was having a blast. It was a really GREAT demo.

Damn, loving this so far. Started with Therion, got H'annit, and just got Ophilia. 2:38 down. I'll probably make it to the fourth character but won't have enough time to finish their intro.

Definitely going to keep that run going for the game proper, but I'll make a new profile and play through the other characters' stuff.

The only thing I'm gonna need more info on is Ophilia's path action. I know I can lead people for events and then also to bring them into battle, but is there a way to know if an NPC has a "quest" for guidance, rather than just a party member summon?

Wut? But then... what's the point of transferring progress in the full game? You'll be missing important character interactions if you do that... I'll just have to replay from the beginning to get the real interactions then... guess i shouldn't have played the demo

I'm surprised the framerate isn't 60fps handheld. The graphics don't seem particularly demanding.

So what's the general consensuar of the game atm?

Seems like it could be one if the contenders of sleeper of the year, but i don't want to hype too soon, it's made by the creators of Bravely Default, 4/10 games for me.

Octopath is like a lottery ticket.

I only played the first demo and it's gonna be a banger

and I felt Bravely was an 8/10, so...

I hated Bravely Default after 4 or 5 chapters. I had a blast playing the three hours in this game. Hopefully the game isn't filled to the brim with needless padding.

This is made by a completely different team. As far as I know the only staff crossover are the two producers at Square-Enix who did Bravely before. Not even the same development studio.

So is there a way to trick the timer?

You can just create new save files (or new profiles), but it's impossible to play anything past the first chapter for each character. So you can technically play the 1st chapter of each character. Doing this would also mean you'll have to replay most of the Chapter 1s when/if you play the final release.

I can't say I'm especially impressed with the writing so far (Ophelia's chapter). Lots of expository dialogue mixed with melodrama.

So what happens when the 3 hours is up? Are you completely locked out of the demo? Can you just delete the save data & "reset" the timer with a new save file? Had no idea that there was a time limit, which just makes me feel like I'm gonna have to hurry & "get the most" out of the demo.

I started with Therion and got Alfyn. They work awesome together since many of the items Therion steals can be used by Alfyn to concoct potions. Ended my playthrough after beating Alfyn's intro and clearing a few battles in a dungeon I was a bit underleveled for in the south riverlands.

Interacctions? How that works? You havebto advance with every character step by step and if you advance excesively with one of them you can miss interacctions with other characters?

If this la true, this would be AWESOME
