Maybe. If that's how you see that fight, I wont say you're wrong.

But I viewed it as them more or less being portrayed as equal in strength. And then they both pull a light saber in half, basically at equal strength there.
Except it's not about what you see.

It's literally shown to you.

He fights 3-4 people at a time without getting touched (minus the grapple at the end).

Rey quickly finds herself left with one opponent who hits her multiple times (the camera goes off Kylo to show this happening multiple times).

The force contest sure was more equal, but again, Kylo has been shown to fall apart when conflicted.

Johnson's explained this. Kylo doesn't know the Lightsaber is destroyed at the time. It explodes as the ship is impacted, he's knocked out and Rey takes the pieces before he wakes up. So he doesn't where the saber is, and then sees Luke with it, the saber Kylo believes belongs to him.

The blue lightsaber isn't entirely to trick the audience. It's to have maximum dramatic effect on Kylo.

Glad to know there was a reason for it, but I'd still think the green saber would have a more dramatic effect on Kylo, being that's the one he saw Luke try to kill him with.

Yeah, and Rey saves him in the end. They both get grappled and she managed to get free when he didn't. No fight will have them each fight exactly half the enemies and take the exact same amount of hits.

People need to get the fuck over it.

This coming from a guy who's gone by "Jedi" online since before Episode I came out.

Luke can fly and shoot a blaster in the first movie, trains with Obi Wan, listens to his advice and sees his examples, and has one split second where he fires one shot with his ship using some force intuition. Then in the next movie, Luke trains almost the entire movie, learns how to use his senses and increase his physical prowess generally. Then goes to fight Vader and loses badly, and nearly dies. Then trains on his own and comes back in the next movie looking like a completely different person. His personality has evolved, his outfit, his skills. It takes him that long, and only then do they refer to him as a Jedi. And this is with Force Ghost advisors whispering in his ear frequently.

It's not like I want training scenes to drag the movie down just because. Those are legitimately some of the coolest parts of the movies I like. The first Matrix movie is great for this reason. Imagine if Rey trained with Luke for real, and learned some interesting new aspects of the force since Luke spent 20 years at the first Jedi temple with all the original texts? Instead she learned nothing really. She meditated one time, and beat Luke in a sword fight.

My guess is they're going to do this in the time skip between VIII and IX and she'll be reading those books on her own. And I think that's cool. But they just rushed her ascension too rapidly in the first two movies, and she had very little she couldn't overcome on her own without training.
Please watch that Rey and Luke "fight" again. Luke is just toying with her after she runs after him and strikes him in the back. He disarms her easily and only falls after Rey decides to raise the stakes and grabs the only lightsaber on the entire island. Saying she beat Luke in a sword fight is just willfully misinterpreting the scene.

Anyway, we get just as much evidence in the ANH that Luke can fly and shoot as we do Rey is capable in hand to hand combat in TFA. To say both of those should carry over to starfighters and lightsaber's relatively equally doesn't seem like a stretch. On top of that, like Luke, Rey gets absolutely outclassed by Snoke. She is only saved due to Kylo's betrayal of Snoke, not her own volition. She was literally just a tool for his betrayal, not an active participant.

TLJ gives Rey the time on the island to explore what she needs to learn so she can then expand her knowledge on her own, no different than Luke. The lessons they needed to learn were different. Luke had Obi Wan, and learned of the nature and the mythology of the Force from him. But he was always dubious of it, and what he could achieve (see, for instance, the scene where he attempt to block the training droid on the Falcon). Yoda's training on Dagobah was largely on what Luke was capable of via the Force, and to not judge what can be done by the Force by the appearance and physical capabilities of the user. Rey, unlike Luke, was accepting of the abilities provided by the Force immediately. What she didn't have, that Luke did, was an Obi Wan in TFA, and therefore, Luke needed to do the heavily lifting on the mythology of the Force in TLJ.

I think Anakin's lightsaber was more impactful in this case since it's essentially Luke finally taking it up after Rey has been offering it to him repeatedly throughout the movie. So him accepting and using it is him fulfilling his role as the "legend" that Rey and the Resistance need him to be.

The green saber would have been effective if Luke's sole goal was to piss Kylo off, but Luke wasn't just trying to troll him - he apologizes for his failure with Ben. I think that apology would ring much hollower if he used the lightsaber that played such a huge part in his perceived betrayal.

How anyone could interpret this as the film showing their equals is beyond me. Rey grew up fighting for her life, using a lightsaber isn't difficult especially if you're force sensitive, but her inexperience with the weapon shows as does the gap between her and a focused Kylo

Good news y'all I got a leak of the intro scrawl prototype.

I think fans will be very excited.

This is amazing

The Last Jedi was exactly the slap in the face that fans needed.

It looks like they're still reeling from it.

He has the cooler moments in that fight for sure. But the real question is, is he vastly better than she is here? I don't get that impression. And they turn to face each other right after this fight you know, and they have literally equal strength in the force at that moment.

You guys think Kylo would easily beat Rey in VIII? I really didn't get that vibe. So far she beat him once in VII, and then tied a force contest in VIII.

Kylo's main weakness are his emotions, if his emotional state is out of wack then he gets massively nerfed, his mental state in TFA hurt him worse than a blaster shot that sent people flying. Rey has a ton of potential but she's not as strong as Kylo in 7 or 8.

I hope someway somehow this funds a Synder's director cut of TLJ just to tie all the angry fans from all the cinematic universes together.

Oh goddamnit I'm dying

A bit long but still worth it

Where the fuck my Ashoka movie
Expecting a cameo in the Obi Wan film (I want one too)

She is literally swinging at air in part of that gif as the guy she's fighting casually walks up to her

Meanwhile Kylo's handling three dudes pretty well I'd say

(Actual description of these guys wet dream)

It'll be the same movie except for the last hour that will be replaced by an extra hour of Mark Hamill flipping everywhere and destroying shit with the force, ending up killing and destroying the entire First Order.

Then a very real and not transparent Luke faces Kylo Ren in the middle of a volcano in eruption where Luke will discover the true force, originating from a distant planet named Vegeta, will go SSJ and fucking end Kylo with a giga beam blade slash.

Then Luke looks up in the sky and screams his lungs out:
"I DON'T DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE!!!!!!"

Then looks at the camera, with a slight smile on the side and whispers:
"I will never die."

I'll never know what's so bad about The Last Jedi. Sure, the subplot sucked but it at least pushed the story more than Force Awakens ever did

I'm torn. On one hand it is laughable and absurd to think a group of fans are attempting this. Like get over it and move on with your lives.

On the other hand, I hated TLJ so much and wish I could erase it from my memory and hope this fan-made remake would be better than what we got so I can enjoy the Star Wars franchise once again.

Whew.

To me, that moment is Luke finally accepting it after rejecting both times Rey offered it to him (the other being after their fight).

King Arthur has been brought up as one of the sources for Star Wars, especially in the new trilogy, and it's most overt when Rey pulls the saber out of the snow. It's like a torch that gets passed to the hero of each generation. She's offering it to Luke, the original hero, to take up his role again and he refuses. He doesn't believe that hero ever really existed. It's only once he realizes that doesn't matter, that they need him to be that savior even if it's a lie, that he finally "accepts" it and becomes the hero Rey wanted him to. He does everything people naively hoped of him, taking on the whole first order alone with that light saber, in order to keep them alive. Maybe Rian intended for that layer to be there as well or maybe I'm reading into it, but it makes sense to me that Luke would be using that saber in the context of what he's doing and how he's resolving his arc.

Doing this and not the prequels is pretty telling...
It really is alarming and should be taken serious by Lucasfilm. If fans are willing to do this then there should be a cause for concern. The prequels is expected because they were horrible. But TLJ was for the most part good, so if fans feel that strongly that it did irreparable damage then maybe LF should listen for a change. They didnt for solo.

But asking to redo TLJ is pure nonsense. The fans need to put this much effort into making a new story. Let luke go.

The Last Jedi was super good so I'm hoping they just ignore this. This kind of behavior shouldn't be given any attention.

No, it shouldn't be taken seriously, because a bunch of butthurt nerd boys are sad girls are heroes in their movie.

TLJ wasn't perfect, but I liked it over all.

But man the salt has always been so delicious. This campaign is just amazing to me, like any studio would ever wipe a major movie from existence because some fans were angry it didn't meet their headcanons.

I'm dying to see their grand replacement script, probably will make my immortal look like dickenson.

It's some mix between "This isn't fanservice enough and RJ intentionally subverted my expectations but as a fan I am entitled to have all my expectations fulfilled so I'm pissed" and "Why's this movie got so much diversity?!"

This is of course not considering the reasonable critiques such as the subplot you mentioned and some scenes that were cut which would have added some more emotional weight to some parts. I have my problems with TLJ but they have more to do with the execution of certain scenes/arcs and much less to do with whatever most people seem to be whining about.

Ayyy that's a good catch!

EDIT: Real talk, why haven't I seen people use this clip from the movie in some of these discussions? Did it get used to death when TLJ first released (I wasn't part of those threads), is it not allowed, or what? Is it somewhere in one of the pages I skipped over?
