I'm on mission 11 and I'm looking for a plane that is effective against lots of clustered ground targets. Anyone has any recommendation?
What was the mission 11? The naval mission?
If so, anti-ship missiles, and possibly fast standard missile reload (since you'll run out of anti-ship missiles well before you run out of targets, though you can resupply but IMO that takes too much time to fly back and forth).
Alternatively, standard unguided bombs, with blast radius increasing mod, though those are less effective against ships so damage boost mod might be useful as well.

Either way, don't waste special weapons on frigates, two standard missiles on the frigate proper (not its gun) will sink it instantly.

There is just enough air combat that you'll want a multi-role plane probably, if only for the maneuverability. The Super Hornet and Su-33 are pretty good options (or maybe F-2, i've never flown that though) if you're still early in the aircraft tree, those have LASMs available. Mirage-2000 is another option.

You could also use land-attack cruise missiles (Gripen, Rafale) but if they get intercepted by CIWS, you'll be frustrated due to limited amount you can carry them.

EDIT I forgot that UGBs aren't common in early game, except for A-10 which isn't too useful in this mission (long distances, air combat). If you have the F-4 Phantom pre-order DLC, it is reasonable option.
Guided bombs should work as well but LASMs are better guided weapon option probably.

I just got past missions 15 and 16. I actually didn't expect the story to go there, and avoided spoilers up to this point. There was that one YouTube video purporting to be AC7's story in a nutshell but I didn't believe it for some reason.

I actually like how this game is messing with the established storytelling conventions of the series though, doing clever things with the mid-mission story beats, the mission design, and the mission briefings. It's actually some of the most ingenious game storytelling of late.

What are you referring to exactly? I remember nothing that seemed like a twist.

I've got missiles on me all the time.

News at eleven mate :)

You better learn how to deal with them, it's a constant from now on. No need for chaff and flares. You just wait for when the missile(s) is near enough, hard turn, problem solved.

The trick is to not become anxious from the audio clue. The sound is alarming, but the real event is not.

Finally finished the game.

Some of the mission are kinda frustrating but overall I was surprised at this game's ability to keep the AC formula fresh with its mission design, the clouds which made a bigger impact than I'd anticipated, and how it tries to switch up storytelling for the franchise.

Any tips for grinding the 70KM Trophy? It's my last one I need before I plat the game, after all of my play time I think I only have 41K distance traveled. Should I just take X02 with max engine speed and fly around the map on mission 1 freeplay?

I think I estimated that it would take either about 14 campaign runs from start to finish to get to 70km flown since I think on average you fly around 5.3k each complete run of the game (at least based on the fact that I had about 21k after finishing the game once on each difficulty). So you could either play through the game a ton or use a rubber band to fly in a circle for about 14 hours in free flight.

Fuck, either patch 1.02 or updating AMD drivers did something, i'm getting occasional hitching in frame rate (drops one or two frames per sec for a second or so at times).

Just came back to this today and did missions 15 through 20.

My thoughts, positives first:

- For the most part it was pretty visually impressive, particularly the weather effects
- I liked the aircraft tree for the most part, though it had some downisdes
- The mission design was reasonably varied, with some interesting side objectives
- Contrary to some I quite liked the id-ing enemies mechanic
- There's a few really good missions in there. 18 in particular was a favourite (the castle), the lightning mission was cool, mission 19 with the arsenal bird, mission 15 was fun with multiple fronts. The back half felt stronger than the front for sure. Also a shout out to mission 13, that was fun as well
- Excellent score, kicking in at all the right moments

Downsides:
- AI teammates are useless. I'm not asking for them to do everything for me but the game can be genuinely aggravating when you're under constant missile lock and you know it's because none of the AI friendlies attacks actually do any damage, when they can be bothered to attack
- Smaller scale. I've been spoiled a bit by AC6 as the first game in the series I played, but for the most part I didn't really feel like I was in an all out war in the way I did 6. I miss the multiple fronts of those missions too. Part of the problem is the penal unit section, where both the stories and mission feels small scale
- I had some performance issues on a few missions, particularly the one with all the ground targets on the floating platforms where you could shoot out the cores. Pretty severe FPS drops on the PS4 pro
- Unfocused story in general. There's a bunch of interesting threads in there but the story doesn't really seem to stick with them at all and as a reuslt they don't really come together.
- Some dogfights are just annoying, usually with drones. I don't like fighting stuff that zips about ridiculously.
- That stupid escort mission with the SAM sites
- Targeting was frustrating sometimes. Game needs a specific cycle TGT button, because as much as I liked mission 19 it was a fucking ballache trying to target the right bit of the bird. Sometimes I had it targeted and I wasn't sure because of the mess of green boxes

Overall I enjoyed it but there's a lot of frustrating stuff in there. I got the version with AC5 HD for free so I'm sure I'll fire that up soon.

Uh, it seems first DLC got stealth released? One day after my last post.
It is the ADF-11F Raven. Part of the Season Pass or standalone.

Just bought the game on Xbox today (it's 40% off).

On the 444 mission is there an easy way to break a locked-on missile? Getting torn up. I am using the arcade controls. I've read if you jam on the brakes and dive you can break a lock...

Also any early game planes worth buying? Not really digging the plane tree thing. I would just rather go straight to the better planes. Or it seems like they unlock as you play? Is this true?

Bummer, in this case I was hoping for 'pay to win'. Thank you very much.

Yeah, it's awkward. I see why they don't want it to unbalance the campaign, but if that's the case, I would just make it "free" once you finish the story once. Grinding the money is a real buzzkill for something you paid for. The secondary weapons cost too, so even though 2m is not as much as it would be in some of the other Ace games, it's still a lot.

Any opinion on the new DLC mission? I played it today and thought it was great. Huge, sprawling dogfights and the idea of enchanter planes enhancing your accuracy is a great idea.

God, if a potential AC8 keeps that level of polish, Ace Combat will reach an insane level of quality

What I noticed:

- Radio chatter is much more important and pretty much relentless
- They name enemy planes by the name of their planes now. They're going to comment a Su-57 is a enhanced stealth plane and much harder to down
- The two aces has things up their sleeves. One of them jams your IFF and creates fake targets so you have to select the correct one
- The music is dynamic! It changes throughout the mission while keeping the basic structure

Official soundtrack coming in November after the release of all 3 DLC missions.
Thanks for the heads up (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)

I don't exactly know what this is, and nobody in this thread was able to shed any light on it earlier, but it is much better than the official soundtrack IMHO:

I'm always down for a new listen, I'll give it a try!

Oh my god finally got a chance to playing Unexpected Visitor.
What an absolutely fantastic mission!

Just non stop thrills and dog fights.

The finale was perfect since I killed the dude with my very last missile (i know technically the game keeps giving you 2 more but still)

Started up this game and have been really enjoying it, but Mission 6 can go to hell for all I care...
Failes 8 times in a row now, either because time runs out, or because I get shot down towards the end.

Pickey up the game at the current sale for 50% off.
Wanted to have some dog fighting besides my space hauling in elite dangerous.
I also read all Hotas are now supported.
Does the game use the novice control sheme with hotas or the 'expert' ?

Is it ready to start or do i have to get a proper button mapping ini file from somewhere?

So the game is on sale on both consoles atm. Was tempted to get on Xbox as I assumed it would be X Enhanced, but sadly it is not.

What is it like on PSVR?

And is the season pass worth it? The base game is $30 on PSN and the deluxe edition is $47 (aus).

The game is worth it for the VR missions alone if you have PSVR. Entirely different experience.

I bought the deluxe versions to access the planes, but the DLC missions(the two that I've played) have proven to be really good with more frantic fights and longer than the base ones.

It's technically X enhanced lol. It's 720p on the S and 1080p on the X. Also the season pass is 100% worth it, some of the best DLC content you'll find.

The X enhancement is a joke. Get the PS4 version if you have a choice, the VR is outstanding.

The game still only supports a selection of HOTAS so you'll need to find a compatibility list.
I bought the T Flight HOTAS 4 for this game and now the twist part drifts, so the plane is always rolling. Updated the firmware and checked on my PC and it is still getting the drift. What a fragile, crappy product.

having looked online this is apparently a common issue with these sticks.

Game isn't really designed with a HOTAS in mind anyway. IMO getting a HOTAS specifically for this game is a total waste.

It was so good. These 3 DLC missions should have been a full game by itself. The submarine's captain is such a cool antagonist and I feel that the
Mimic/Clemens
plot could have been more developed with more missions

DLC missions should become the baseline of quality for AC8 definitely. Great rivals, great missions, great gimmicks and especially great chatter and even large squadrons are given personalities

PS: I think AC8 should get a real single-player season pass rather than 3 missions. It was fun discussing the missions every month

God I hope the DLC missions are the baseline for AC8 and they used the DLC to test things out. I heard AC7 went through some development changes so maybe now they found their new footing for it.
