Just had to read up on this chestnut nonsense. They're mushrooms, confirmed by Miyamoto. The chestnut name came around because someone on the team didn't understand what was drawn, so it's more of a nickname.
They're mushrooms. Let's just shut that chestnut nonsense down.
And basically all the bricks in Super Mario Bros 1 is actually people from the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser and his crew used black magic to transform everyone.
In the SMB manual they were labeled as "mushroom traitors" implying they sold out to koopa while the toads didn't.
Goombas actually being chestnuts (Kuribo) which I didn't know makes their appearance in SMW make a lot more sense though.
Edit: apparently the chestnut thing is false and they're shiitake mushrooms after all
