Googled "mushroom with feet."
The Hungarian term "gomba" translates into English as "mushroom."
Wait until you hear about how he punches Yoshi in the back of the head in World.

I was born in 1987... I never read the instruction manual. I just played the game.
Iwata himself didn't know it was a mushroom... https://web.archive.org/web/20091217145506/http://us.wii.com:80/iwata_asks/nsmb/vol2_page5.jsp
Iwata
By the way, is it a coincidence that the Goomba looks like a mushroom?
Tezuka
It's a shiitake mushroom!
Iwata
It's a shiitake? (laughs) So it's not a chestnut?
Tezuka
That's right. (laughs)
By releasing spores into the atmosphere
LMAO! That gif is amazing, where is it from?
And basically all the bricks in Super Mario Bros 1 is actually people from the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser and his crew used black magic to transform everyone.
What got me mad was walking under the boomerangs at the end of the last level... I had no Idea
Good god, I'm dying right now.
This is some offensive shit. Goombas are more than repurposed mushrooms. You take that back!!
Is this the thread where I start posting gifs of secrets in Mario games that I don't think are anything special yet people seem to flip their shit over them?
You mushroom boot lickers will never silence me.Just had to read up on this chestnut nonsense. They're mushrooms, confirmed by Miyamoto. The chestnut name came around because someone on the team didn't understand what was drawn, so it's more of a nickname.
They're mushrooms. Let's just shut that chestnut nonsense down.
For the longest time as a child, I didn't realise Mario was punching blocks - I just assumed he was headbutting them...

I always thought they were angry birds staring down their beaks at you.

Why "maybe"?And basically all the bricks in Super Mario Bros 1 is actually people from the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser and his crew used black magic to transform everyone.
To me that was implicitly obvious when I first booted up the game in the mid-80s.
But isn't the revelation that they aren't mushrooms at all, but rather Japanese chestnuts?
In Japan they are Kuribo. Kuri = chestnuts.
/thread
There's certain confusion regarding Goombas given their japanese name "Kuribo" means something along the lines "Chestnut Boy", in addition to Prickly Goombas introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which are Goombas that hide inside spiky chesnuts.
Yes. It was basically an unlocalized line.Wait, then why is it called Kuribo's shoe instead of goomba's shoe?
