The whole design behind the opening screen in level 1-1 is based on getting players to know that goombas = bad mushroom shape, mushrooms = good mudhroom shape.

The Hungarian term "gomba" translates into English as "mushroom."

Chestnuts!? O..o;;
At least these pretend to be mushrooms!
(Google: キノコの山)
...and in some countries red and white speckled mushrooms are edible while they are deadly poisonous in other places...

And basically all the bricks in Super Mario Bros 1 is actually people from the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser and his crew used black magic to transform everyone.

Fun fact: the game keeps a tally of how many brick blocks you destroy. That variable is never actually used for anything, the game seemingly only keeps it so it secretly knows how much of a monster you are for committing mass-murder of innocents.

Wait... so are Goomba basically they "CHUD" versions of "the Toad people" in the mushroom kingdom?

They should make a movie about this... an R-rated movie.

It's a way to save space on sprites. It's why many things are symmetrical.

Iwata himself didn't know it was a mushroom... https://web.archive.org/web/20091217145506/http://us.wii.com:80/iwata_asks/nsmb/vol2_page5.jsp

Iwata
By the way, is it a coincidence that the Goomba looks like a mushroom?
Tezuka
It's a shiitake mushroom!
Iwata
It's a shiitake? (laughs) So it's not a chestnut?
Tezuka
That's right. (laughs)

There's certain confusion regarding Goombas given their japanese name "Kuribo" means something along the lines "Chestnut Boy", in addition to Prickly Goombas introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which are Goombas that hide inside spiky chesnuts.

My previous understanding was that there were some goombas designed to look more like water chestnuts (Super Mario World style) and some more like mushrooms. I think Super Mario 3D World actually has both varieties! (I think it's that game and not Odyssey or something else)
