My previous understanding was that there were some goombas designed to look more like water chestnuts (Super Mario World style) and some more like mushrooms. I think Super Mario 3D World actually has both varieties! (I think it's that game and not Odyssey or something else)

Those are called Galoombas, Kuribon in Japan, they being referred as Goombas was a localization goof in SMW.

Same sprite with different colors, eyes, no highlight or self-shadows, no spots, one pixel taller body, and feet.

So basically not the same sprite at all. :P

Fun fact: the game keeps a tally of how many brick blocks you destroy. That variable is never actually used for anything, the game seemingly only keeps it so it secretly knows how much of a monster you are for committing mass-murder of innocents.
