There is a tremendous amount less grass... but it seems to have a positive effect in one regard for me; aliasing. Even at 4k with the games FXAA the grass would shimmer excessively in the OG release. Here tho due to the lack of (and a more simplified version) grass there isn't that excessive aliasing on it, which I went as far as to supersample from 8k to see if it'd resolve on the OG release. The TAA hack in the OG release resolved it, but at the cost of heavy ghosting, most notable when the characters were moving over, you guessed it, grass. I guess due to the fact it wasn't a properly implemented TAA, and instead an ini tweak. So yeah, this is weird for me. It's a quite clear visual downgrade but it's somehow less distracting for me. I'd almost take this reduced grass, but with the higher graphical settings of everything else from the OG version.

In the original release you could enable TAA with an .ini edit, these two posts should help.

So has anyone pinpointed what causes the random drops to 10fps? Last time I've seen this behavior was due to lack of video memory, but you'd think a 980ti would have enough.

I found there was too much ghosting (most noticeable when panning the camera around grass) no matter how much tweaking I did, but you might still find it preferable to the shimmery grass.
I actually tried but nothing seems to change...

I have normal DQ 11 (unstarted) for my Ps4 Pro, I've ordered a PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Am I correct in that the Series X version is based on the Switch release, i.e. there is no way to get the better music plus 4k visuals at the PS4 Pro level?

yes, dragon quest xi s - definitive edition is based on the switch version of the game, on all platforms.

Remember folks!

DQXI is super fun and great, but very easy on normal difficulty.

I highly recommend putting the game on Harder Monsters before starting the demo or a new game, by adjusting Draconic challenges as you start a new game.

It will make the enemies legitimately challenging and have you make the most use of your skills and even status ailments! Dazzle (blind) helps on so many bosses, you don't even know.

Give it a shot, keep at it, and it'll quicky become one of your favorite rpgs ever!

There is no Series X version. Dragon Quest XI S on PC, Xbox One and PS4 are all based on the Switch version and on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X specifically, run at native 4k60fps.

Dragon Quest XI S will likely be BC and work on PS5 and Series X, and will run like they do on the Pro and One X. The original DQXI which you have will not benefit from such upgrades on PS4 Pro or PS5. Pretty sure it runs at upscaled 4k30fps on Pro so will be the sameHope this helps.

Wait wait wait wait. This version has the improved, orchestral music, QoL improvements, additional content, 2D mode...

But the graphics are actually reduced from the originally released version.

Edit - I guess so. They ported the game to Switch with reduced graphics and improved content, then ported it right back to the other platforms instead of adding that content. Wow.

Yes cause they are lazy and couldn't do a proper port.

I highly recommend not playing with Harder Monsters, it's really annoying and the game really doesn't feel designed for it. It turns the game into a tedious grind to not get rekt by every single random trash mod encounter and makes the game feel like hard work. Save it for a second playthrough. Yes the game is pretty easy without it, but at the half way point it puts up far more of a challenge anyway.

To the users who say there doesn't seem to be much of a visual downgrade, here's side by sides of some shots I took. Both games are at 1080p with their highest settings, with no .ini tweaks (which improves things further with the original release).

Tried out the demo for a minute and the graphics are fine imo. Pre-ordering. Will be fun playing through this again, hopefully the casino music doesn't drive me nuts like it did the last time I played this game on my PS4.

Totally fair, to all of you.

I recommend it because the game might be very un-challenging to those who get into the systems and are usually used to DQ stuff beforehand, especially since you can always turn whatever difficulties you want off after the fact.

I myself had a tough but fun time on my playthrough, and stuck with it the whole way and was Challenged. Nothing wrong with not wanting that since the game gets REAL hard on Stronger Monsters, even without the other stuff.

However, I have to disagree with Over-leveling being needed, it isn't. So many people use overleveling as the only way to get past super hard encounters, rather then adjusting strategy or reseting skills to do different stuff.

Again, I'm not trying to judge anyone for thinking that, but I am trying to say that in my second playthrough on the S version, ALL the bosses I had trouble on because they did too much damage because of how high enemy Strength scales, were WAY easier when I had Serena use Dazzle magic on them to make their attacks miss, and Sylvando use Hustle Dance to heal the whole party consistently.

Keep these two things in mind and you will have WAY less trouble with the game on Harder Monsters, and still get plenty of fun challenge.

I mean, Realistically, most of you are gonna play this ONCE and never play it again, you might as well make it count. That's how I feel about it.

It's worth re-experiencing though, because it's one of the best in the series for MANY reasons.

Above all, just have fun with it, and take your time to enjoy the game. It's worth every penny. Besides the phoned in soundtrack by a huge asshole, that's the one blemish on it in my mind.

Man I'd pay so much money for a modder to somehow find a way to match the overall graphical quality of the original in S

Anyone know where this demo ends?

And yeah got to the first city and can definitely feel the visual downgrade from the original. Enjoying the additions in this version (although why do they change random character names in 2017-2020 still wtf, I played the original with the import and this one in English with JP voices and hearing them keep calling Erik Kamui is so freaking weird, especially when they keep most names like Genma).

Sorry if this was already asked, but will this version replace the normal one on the console digital stores?

If so i have to pick a copy soon, cause i have little interest in the DE.
Thanks

So, theoretically what could modders do to the DE's graphics? I assume they can't do anything about the shadows, reduced foliage and draw-distance, but would they be able to mod in the higher poly models and higher quality textures from the OG release?

It still looks fine, PC version looks amazing but this still looks fine and benefits greatly from running at a higher res framerate on all platforms save for base PS4/X1

I put 60 hours into the Switch version and i'm wondering how considering how muddy it got at times. Oh yeah, I remember, it's because I was really enjoying the goddamn game. Sometimes you should just enjoy the game that you're playing.

Wouldn't they be able to more easily mod in the opposite of what you mentioned? Shadows should be able to get tweaked, draw distance is sometimes an engine limitation and considering that this was built for Switch on an updated version of UE4, it might be tough; definitely do-able though, you can force it to draw everything.

I've been playing the demo some more on my PS4 Pro and while it's clearly a step down from the original on PS4 Pro, the resolution and frame rate make up for it.

I think I just love this game too much. Do we know if it has a new trophy list? I wouldn't mind getting a second platinum...

Yeah, the original PS4 Pro version had its own issues. There was this really, really and I mean reaaaaaaaaaaaaally shitty motion blur/framepacing something going on whenever things were in motion. So it looked gorgeous when not moving, but always irked me when moving which was like 99% of the game.

The PC version I believe didn't have that (didn't play the PC original) and was the real defining visual version of the game at its best, especially with 60fps mod and orchestra mod.

But yeah, coming from the PS4 Pro version, this new version plays way better, has more content and looks worse in some ways, better in others, so it's a wash and is generally fine. I can see people coming from the PC version original being letdown though.

I feel at its best visuals (PC) DQXI original has this lighting/shader look to make everything look like a CG movie/clay-ish, sorta like how Blue Dragon did on X360. It's a nice look and pretty impressive. The DQXI S's lack of lighting/shader totally loses that look and just looks like a standard cell-shaded colorful video game, which is fine too, just not particularly impressive. DQXI S's visuals kind of remind me of FFXIV's world visuals. Good art, but flat lighting.

Would love to play again in 60fps with orchestral audio, but already put in more than enough hours to beat the original PS4 version.

Just as long as you realise the OG release costs $20 more and is missing far more than just orchestral music
I hear the consensus on the additional content is that it isn't really worth it, and as nice as the QoL features added are, many many many people seem to have enjoyed the game before and after the Switch version released. I'm not interested in a 2D mode.

I don't think that's the consensus at all. Many many many people have enjoyed the additional content introduced in the Switch version, along with the orchestrated music.

I feel like the speed stuff is the biggest QoL, any rpg that adds fast battles and running is a big improvement because over time it does shorten the length of the game in a good way.

I wish there was a way to skip to the extra content.

Just like P5R I'm not going to replay the game just to experience it after spending 70+hrs playing DQXI already.

Hopefully, people can do some modding magic to add the more detailed models into the S edition.
I'll be playing the game via gamepass, really don't want to buy it again unless said modding happens, but glad to give it another go two years later.

I dropped the original release on PC after 8 hours, and that was all with the orchestrated music mod. But I played the whole thing on Switch. The ultra fast battle speed really helps here.

Great game ya but why should should I not feel disapointed when square didn't make this the best version they could? I've supported the game once but not supporting this minimal effort

I know im gonna enjoy the shit out of it but the visual downgrade is so deflating. They did a phenomenal job reworking just about everything for the Switch version, and the game is still very nice looking and has a really strong art style but downgrading the visuals and then basically raising the resolution of those downgraded visuals is not the way.

I finished playing through the whole demo on PC today, I think the game still looks fantastic and in no way do I feel that the visual differences degrade my enjoyment of the game. The biggest bummer for me is the lack of a loyalty discount of some sort.

I want this again on PS4 (to platinum it a second time), but it only being 30 FPS on base PS4 sucks.

The QoL improvements (esp. the battle speed) > the small graphical downgrades. I don't see myself getting a PS5 until FF16 comes out either, hmm. This is a tough one.
