She's entirely right and this response is likely to cost her some votes, sadly.

Really. That's exactly the kind of thing I'd say in that situation, but in that case, I'd like to tell Warren "tone it down, don't be dismissive". That sucks.

sick burn but i'm pretty sure the problem with evangelicals asking about gay marriage isn't that they're having a problem getting laid

(Some) white Christian males have very fragile egos, and I don't think they'll respond well to it.

I want to iterate that I don't think it's a problem. I just hadn't seen this side of Warren before.

I grew up around some Christian folks (leaning left) who would respond much better with the first part of the answer than the second part.
Christians need to seriously get over themselves. It's pretty twisted trying to compel the rest of society to follow their faith. Just mind your business and enjoy your Heaven when you die.

Anybody that is offended by this was never gonna vote for her in the first place. She's an evil socialist.

Is that dismissive? The very implication that any person has the right to tell other people who they should marry is ludicrous, and this answer points this out beautifully. Sure, the quip in the end might not have been "smart", but honestly, I assume the people who are against gay marriage are probably the same people who wouldn't ever vote Democratic, so it's likely a good idea to chose to engage and energize your target demographic, instead of worrying about people who are irrelevant for her chances in getting elected

That's a perfect response.

If your faith is against a same sex marriage, don't marry a same sex person. It's simple as that. Everyone else doesn't have to follow your old-fashioned codes from millennia ago, eventhough religious people like to dictate what others can do with their lives. Funnily enough, divorce is rarily an issue for them, despite of what their "holy" book says, "What therefore god has joined together, let not man separate."

That was... Fine? I guess?

Y'all gave me some really high expectations with your responses.

She's better than Hillary, at least.

You'd tell her to "tone it down" over that?

This is the kinda low key sexism I expect if she makes it to the GE. Biden can be boisterous and talk tough and it be a sign of strength. Warren makes a minor quip and needs to "tone it down" to protect the fragile egos of insecure men.

Not saying you are sexist because I don't get that impression. Speaking more in general of the "concern" in this thread over her remark. I thought it was pretty on point.

I am warming up to Warren. Like, exponentially. Not because of this but because of other things. This helps :p.

Incidentally this is actually what it really comes down to with a lot of conservative culture beliefs. The real problem is not even the belief itself, but the belief behind it that they should be able to force that belief on the whole nation and/or world.

Don't believe in gay marriage? Fine, don't get gay married. Problem solved.

Don't believe in abortion? By all means, don't get an abortion.

You believe strongly in standing for and reciting the pledge of allegiance and proudly saluting the flag? Go for it.

Don't believe in expressing yourself as a gender other than the one you were assigned at birth? Then don't.

You believe in the bible and the ten commandments? Feel free to paste that shit all over your home.

But of course that's not what the issue at hand really is. It's really about the right to force the rest of the world to bow to what you believe.
Very well said.

If I was an US citizen, I would have voted for Clinton because of Trump. Now, I can say I would vote Warren because of Warren.

Yeah. The same people who will tell you they were offended byte quip are also the ones cheering when Trump calls for beating up a protester.aka Fox News.

I'm curious how Trump answers this question, but I guess he just says "I've got nothing against the gays, but you also have to respect people's religion. Very important things some say. Some say the most important" and the press applauds him for loving both sides.

Offended, sure. I think many don't care about these issues but won't like the smug liberal attitude. The "gotcha" comments usually play well with the core demographic - which, let's be honest, resetera is - but not with the rest.

You'd tell her to "tone it down" over that?

I'm being pessimistic - maybe for bad reasons, I'm not american. But yeah, I'm pretty sure that'll play against her after the primary. Unless the US have become more LGBT-tolerant and feminist than I'd expect, not that my country is a model on these issues.

Very true. Religious freedom is just a guise for religious oppression. They can limit their options in life as much as they want to, but they have absolutely no right to force their ways on others. I hope one beautiful day we can be completely free from the fascism of religion.

The perfect delivery almost makes me think it was staged, but I dont even care because that was an amazing nugget of condensed, easily-digestable fuel for the youth vote

I mean, part of the warm up for these candidates when they do debates and town halls is to have questions that are most likely to come up from the audience and people running it, and then coming up with an acceptable answer/response. So it was most likely rehearsed when they "knew" the question was going to come up since it was a LGBTQ+ crowd. Still great though.

It's the perfect answer to such a question. How one person feels about marriage due to their believes shouldn't be a reason for the rest of society to bar rights from some other group. Two guys or two gals wedding has absolutely no effect on anyone but them.

Anyone that says she is being dismissive or should tone it down hasn't been paying attention to the orange shit whistle in the white house.

She's definitely my fave out of all the viable nominees, but I am just sad at having to vote in another 70 year old. She will definitely have my vote, though.

Also yeah, the tone policing in here is super eye roll inducing.
