Mighty DOOM crossover. Fun little timewaster tbh but I am big DOOM fan in addition to Fallout.

I'm not too worried about it. I think a lot of the kneejerk reactions have settled down.

Should I play NV (for the first time) on my Series X with comfy couch but in 720p upscaled or whatever it is, or on my basic laptop with a small screen, no achievements, but presumably much better graphics (and mods)?

Fallout has really gone mainstream

So I reached out to Seth Baum, the executive director of the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute, a think tank that analyzes the greatest threats to civilization and develops strategies to reduce these risks. We talked about what the aftermath of a nuclear war could look like in our real world — and also what we should focus on now to prevent this scenario from happening, as well as how we could prepare for it if it does.

Loving this theory and this is my new headcanon. MODUS' AI is based on that person watching the Vault-Tec meeting in the dark.

Plus there is the whole "Management" faction who owns the Whitespring and led by Chairman Otis.

The Management, or the Whitespring Management, is a mysterious faction in Appalachia around 2104. Their only known representative is Orlando, who supports the reborn Responders. The Management is intensely private, value the work of the Responders, and are stated to be the "owners" of the Whitespring.[1]

The Management relies on human agents like Orlando to act as its eyes, ears, and hands where necessary to maintain its interests, as it cannot travel.[2][3] At the same time, the Management has access to immense resources, allowing it to funnel food, medicine, and high-tech ultracells to the Responders. The only explanation given is that the Management "wisely invested its wealth, when such things mattered."[4] This apparently involved investing in the ATLAS Observatory, judging by the use of ultracells.[5]

The Management is stated to be headed by a "Mr. Otis," the Chairman at the head of the organization.[6] Any similarities to MODUS are vehemently denied by Orlando, who claims never to have heard about it.[7]

Him being Thomas Eckhart would also fit I think. This would make cool pre-War flashbacks and cool ties with 76.

Thomas Eckhart

President Thomas Eckhart was the president of the Appalachian detachment of the Enclave from 2083-2086. Eckhart rose to power through political maneuvering before the Great War and purges of surviving opposition members in the Whitespring bunker. Eckhart is also primarily responsible for the...

Thomas Eckhart's drive and dedication eventually led him to the position of Secretary of Agriculture in the last United States administration, where he became a fervent promoter of the idea of a preemptive nuclear strike on China,[1] an idea that was consistently dismissed by the powers that be, with Eckhart recommended to focus on pursuing the goals of his department.[2]

However, his ardent opposition to communism and fervent nationalism led to him becoming a natural candidate for selection into the innermost enclave of power of the United States government. The relatively benign Department of Agriculture was the perfect cover for funding the Whitespring bunker, with money funneled from the department's coffers under Secretary Eckhart's oversight at a grand scale.[3] The amount of time and money spent by the department did not escape notice, especially from Senator Sam Blackwell of Appalachia and his contacts. However, the senator did not manage to blow the lid off the project.[4]

Rise to Power

When the early warning systems activated on October 23, 2077, as Enclave and regular government officials alike scrambled for shelter from the coming nuclear war, Eckhart was already in position beneath the Whitespring. He was one of the few to make it to safety. Only a select few other members of the Enclave made it to safety, including the Secretary of the Interior and a number of high-ranking officers. The rest were left to fend for themselves.[5] All non-Enclave personnel who arrived at the Whitespring bunker were rounded up and shot, including members of Congress who thought that a Congressional bunker would save their lives.[6]

The survivors were horrified to learn that connections to Raven Rock and the President at Control Station ENCLAVE were lost, leaving them isolated.[7] However, it played right into Eckhart's plans, allowing him to seize the opportunity and lead the fight against communism. After gathering the survivors in the conference room, Eckhart informed them of the isolation and the death of the Secretary of the Treasury due to "radiation sickness," then announced himself as the new leader of their "little enclave," as per the line of presidential succession.[8]

He then offered them a choice: Using the Whitespring to continue the war against communism and the enemies of America, until no enemies stand against them, or opposing his plans. As the Enclave was supposed to be the bastion of democracy, he called for a vote with their feet. Everyone who supported his idea of using the facility and Appalachian resources was asked to stand at the left side of the room, by the entrance. The rest were to stand against the wall on the opposite side. Many sided with General Swafford, who opposed continuing the now pointless war. Eckhart was disappointed but prepared. He had his supporters exit the room, while MODUS sealed the opposition inside, filling it with a toxic gas.[8]

More adventures in Fallout 1!

After for some reason angering a doctor's friend in Junktown simply for standing in his line of sight (reload), I took a trip over to the general store. Shopping was rudely interrupted by an attempt on the shopkeeper, so tried out my hunting rifle to great effect. Killian seemed pretty decent, so recorded Gizmo offering to let me finish the job. Rolled up on him with the law and now the casino is no longer in business. Also I liked how his VATS picture included his desk.

Decided to leave the Skulz for now and head over to The Hub, but not before grabbing a sweet leather jacket and picking up a very good boy who decided to follow me. And luckily he doesn't get in the way of doors half as much as Ian (get the fuck out the way nerd). On the way I met a merchant who was heading for the not at all worryingly named Necropolis, but we love an adventure so why not tag along! Of course it was 2spooky so ran off to The Hub for now, although I nearly got battered to death by ghouls on the way.

Lots of stuff happening in The Hub - missing caravans, a basement full of traps, some very nice weapons. But as soon as I saw the water merchants I headed straight there. I decided not to tell them where the vault was (been telling everyone I'm from everywhere but a vault). Exhausted my leads here so back to spookytown USA. I avoided all of the non friendly ghouls and headed down into the sewers, and we have a lead on the chip! Being the goody two shoes first playthrough protagonist I am, I found the junk needed to fix the water pump and got some lovely repair books to help out.

After attempting to simply walk to the water pump (how dare I), I was captured and tortured by super mutant Frollo. It did not turn out well (reload). I managed to convince big Harry I was a ghoul and fixed the water pump, head down to Vault 12 (surprised there wasn't much going on down here) and grabbed the chip! On the way out I did a final pass and found Set, the angriest ghoul in spookytown. He wants me to kill the super mutants, but considering how much damage Harry did to me on an earlier failed speech check (overkill by about 30hp in one shot) I figured I'd come back later.

I had about 80 days left to return the chip, but considering how much the game and manual bangs out about getting it done I hoofed it back home, with a nice bonus of more than 2000(!) caps in an overturned Nuka Cola truck. On a side note I think the travel in this game and the show do a great job of representing just how much of a desolate mostly empty shithole the wasteland is.

So the water situation is fixed, and now we're back out to figure out what's going on with the growing super mutant population. Also I don't trust my overseer at all. Back to Junktown to deal with the Skulz first!

The one thing I don't like about New Vegas is that there are several locations that are massive and dead feeling. Like the airport, the Boomer area, and pretty much all of New Vegas itself. I don't really understand why these areas are so massive and empty. They should have been like 1/4 the size

A lot of stuff had to be stripped down in terms on NPCs (and in the case of the Vegas Strip split into 3 parts) because they couldn't get parts of the map to run on console without dipping to under 10 fps

your scope is probably for the hunting rifle. i think they sell it on the mojave outpost? its a common-ish drop from usual human enemies so youre probably being very unlucky. 15 hours in you probably can already start finding some sniper rifles too, the one i know is a guaranteed spawn is inside one of the sniper dudes lockers in camp mccarran

Someone please tell me how much I screwed up. I've been playing Fallout New Vegas for the last couple of weeks and I'm like 5~ hours in.

After exploring quite a bunch, I finally decided to do the quest in Goodsprings and help Ringo. Things got quite violent, but we emerged victorious and boy did I loot all the dynamite from the enemies' loot.

So, then I was walking around, and I passed by a prison. The NCR Correctional Facility. They didn't like me because of the previous events, and they opened fire right away. Things got violent once again, and I ended up killing most of the people inside the prison lol. Did I lock myself out of important quests? It's fine either way, I just love the game as it is.

Don't worry about it. From what I remember, you miss out on a single sidequest in the prison, and then the Powder Gangers are irrelevant for the rest of the game.

I'm quite enjoying the game. My only previous experience with the Fallout series was 4, so New Vegas feels like a breath of fresh air.

yes and its a quest but its not in vegas
its in mccarran
i think you get the quest from talking to the commander or something?? the silus part just helps you stop a thing from happening iirc

its more than a single sidequest
the prison has like three small quests and then you get information to solve the vault 19 or whichever one the main powder gangers group is located peacefully and do a quest there too
there are two vendors in the prison who stay around too but thats mostly relevant to heavily modded games with scarcity, you dont really need them for vanilla-vanillaish

but it is very irrelevant unless you really liked those guys so dont worry

its kinda funny though

how most people end up slaughtering the NCRCF despite not really needing to because the powder gangers dont turn hostile to you if you just side with goodsprings, its just "shunned" afaik and you can enter the prison and do stuff there by just paying 50 caps to dawes or whatever his name is/passing a check just fine

but everyone and their mothers kill them all, higher fatality rate than being a caesars legion or enclave member

After 50 hours of playtime and over 80 mods installed on my Steam Deck, I can finally join everyone in saying that New Vegas is fucking INCREDIBLE.

And I haven't even met Caesar yet or started any of the DLC. I'm going to be playing this game forever, apparently.

As far as mods go, there's one I don't see mentioned too often which introduces an actual fully-featured Courier delivery system into the game with randomly generated jobs; so I've spent the last three hours pretty much just playing Death Stranding: New Vegas. First one sent me from Primm to the Strip straight through Quarry Junction and I was just sweating bullets.

Spent some time getting A Tale of Two Wastelands set up on a SteamOS based gaming console PC I set up awhile back. Running NMCs textures, Darnified UI, Just Loot, and a few other nice QoL mods, played for probably 6 hours today, playing FO3 on NV systems/terms is still great, got my ass handed to me multiple times by rad scorpions and mercs, lol.

I think I'm nearing the end of FO1, because fuck me the amount of re-loading and hoping you don't get crit and one shot by a super mutant rocket or minigun is obscene.

Bethesda development boss Todd Howard ruled out moving the action of Fallout away from the United States, saying the "Americana naivete" informs so much of the game series' tone.

On the one hand I do get it for place I've suggested like Europe (though I would love to know how the transatlantic travel that Fallout 3 revealed happens), China, Japan etc. It would be too different and a bit too far removed.

I feel like Canada though is a massive exception to this given it's relationship to the US in the setting (being annexed in 2072, military occupied and stripped for it's resources), hell it isn't that far off from some of the places we've been to already in recent Fallout games. Hell I wrote an entire thread about why I feel Canada (and in particular, Nova Scotia) would be a great setting.

Really hope this isn't the Todd/Bethesda move of playing it safe like turning Valenwood and Cyrodiil from Tropical to temperate to be more generic fantasy and because LOTR was popular (I really dread what they'll do to Hammerfall if that's the setting).

I just beat Honest Hearts (the first DLC I've played in New Vegas so I still have a bunch left) and it was...eh.

I don't think I've ever seen a single character (and voice actor, specifically) carry something as hard as Joshua Graham carried this DLC. Literally everything around him was boring as hell but I really, REALLY wish Joshua was part of the main story and played a role in Legion stuff. Overall the whole thing seemed worth it just for the experience of hanging out with this dude for a little while, but I don't think I'll replay this part ever again.

I've downloaded a mod where you can take the DLC companions back into the main game. Pretty cool. I've only ever played Dead Money, going to jump into Honest Hearts tonight.

On one hand, I'm definitely pushing the stability of New Vegas by now having a lot of plugins in my modlist

On the other hand, I just had to fit Titans of the New West into it. It's like the near perfect compromise between "ok but these could be bigger, and stronger, and just downright intimidating to face" and not requiring too many compatibility patches, compared to previous cool stuff like that FO4 style power armor mod I remember seeing a few years ago.

(Also the animations added for using small guns with power armour are great)

Good to hear Todd still not budging on that. Its something I think he really just gets about the series.

Fallout's whole identity is wrapped around Americana and its pitfalls. With less than 10 out of 50 states being covered so far, they also have enough material to work with and explore for ages.

I want them to continue to expand this whole crazy map. Make each state feel like its own lost world where crazy mutations and unique environments pop up, something I think they did a lot better in 76 than 4.

My understanding of fallout lore is that North America was the only place Vault tech operated (I think there's like 1 vault in Canada and 1 vault in Mexico?) and the only place the FEV happened so I imagine on another country it would just be like Metro or mad max but with ghouls.

Incidentally which mod for the Steam Deck makes New Vegas look pretty/more modern?
I would recommend Deset Natural Weather plus Dusty Distance Redone. I like to let DNW blur distant terrain as well in the ini.

Other option would be NVR but expect bad performance on the SD. I am myself running it modded on a SD (remember to use MO2 people!) and went from VNV as a basis to 397 mods with over 100 plugins. Pretty smooth 40 fps (wouldn't say locked because of cell changes … durn you Gamebryo) with no crashes so far.

But seriously people use the Viva New Vegas guide. And also for people on SD, try Proton GE8-23, no idea what changed but I'm getting the best performance here (roughly 30% higher FPS actually).

Also playing some F76 on the side. Last played it almost 4 years ago. Still enjoying it, feels like the best moment-to-moment gameplay of the modern Fallouts. Also best modern iteration of VATS, don't kill me. In my opinion at this point it is a pretty great marriage of good (might I even say similar to FNV levels of) writing with the best modern take of the gameplay by FO4.

I mean, technically in fallout Canada is part of America

This little tidbit has been hanging around since Fallout 1's opening animation and I've been waiting since then to see them do something with it since it seems like a great source of long-standing drama. Even if they want to keep the regions to the US we know, there should still be some wiggleroom for Seattle/Vancouver or a Detroit/Toronto type of set-up.

Do you know what day it is today?

That's right. George Washington took office as the first president of the United States of America 200 years ago today. And it happened right here. We were going to declare another independence -- the dawn of a new nation -- here. The end of the Patriots' secret rule, liberation of this country...
