I don't think its a meme. It's a genuine thing the player could do. I actually was mussing around with the first sword on my current NG+ playthrough for just that reason (and because I wanted to practice combos in actual fights more).

That said, I don't think it invalidates the challenge complaint. It shouldn't be on the player to balance the game. It's like how I've complained about the lack of genuine exploration in Rebirth and people said I should just not activate the towers that mark map items. Like, yeah, its a potential personal fix but it doesn't change the design choices and priorities that put that lack of exploration into place.
Exactly

I'm just gonna be honest - there is not a way to balance an experience in such a way that both pro players and total action newbies will have a good time.

Even DMC hasn't figured it out and DMC has been around for 20 years. The games are either too easy or too hard with no middle ground.
I think FF7 Rebirth Normal is like the perfect difficulty, maybe a bit too easy or hard for some, but a really good balance.

It is not uncommon to play all of FF16 and not die a single time.

I think what Omega was at was a good baseline for a normal difficulty in FFXVI, and it's good they're aiming for that with Leviathan.

I'm not gonna blame them too much if their first action game is on the easier side, it's a learning experience for them.

Like, sure, I'd love to see more difficulty options.

But panicking over damage changes effecting the difficulty before we know what they even are, and that they'll likely be insignificant overall outside of the skills getting major rebalancing, is goofy to me.

I don't think damage output has anything to do with what FFXVI needs for difficulty anyway, what's more important is increasing the aggressiveness of enemies. Omega wasn't a better challenge because of a change in damage output for Clive, it was because it's attack patterns were stronger.
Yeah. If you try out the Ultimaniac modes, you can see that the biggest issue in regards to difficulty is the aggression of enemies as opposed to the amount of damage Clive puts out. Enemies are really aggressive in Ultimaniac and they'll fuck you up really quick if you lose focus. Ranged and flying enemies especially. And if you've given any thought to your abilities, damage output shouldn't much of an issue either way.

I do think the lack of difficulty in the main (and more arguably Final Fantasy mode) difficulty was an attempt to compromise with the fans who weren't fully on board with the character action direction, but I think they had that covered with the accessibility rings and they probably should have upped the challenge a little bit.

Though, I think the bigger issue than the difficulty is how to get people to experiment with builds without compromising on the player expression the system allows for. There's a ton of fun experimentation you can do with this system but one of the recurring complaints I've seen is a lack of variety, because a bunch of people stick with the same abilities throughout the game because the game doesn't want to force a particular playstyle on the player.

Yeah, and Omega was noticeably more aggressive even on normal, and it threw a lot more AoEs and things to dodge.

They did play it safe in the base game, but it also seems they quickly took the feedback to heart, so I'm not worried about the future if they continue with this battle system.

Honestly I think the answer to this is simple.

Ignore them.

I don't think those that refused to experiment are really a significant group. It's common among the complaints, but it's best not to forget the game has an overwhelmingly positive reception. I don't think they need to risk messing up the design philosophy of player expression.

Also I think this is something that could naturally fix itself as they get the chance to develop more characters. Obviously a first character action game benefits massively from focusing on just one character, but if they iterate off it then giving the player three or four characters to customize(further building off the FFV jobs inspiration that lead to FFXVI's Eikon abilities and builds) and people will more often than not make difficulty builds for the characters.

All the changes sound awesome. Really making me want to fire the game up again.

Speaking of one of the most anticipated additions: how is everyone going to remap their controls?
It's been so long I don't even remember which swaps I wish I could've made.

I don't think you can get people to experiment if they aren't interested in it no matter what kind of design changes are implemented. Experimentation is fundamentally self-driven at its core, and there is various degrees of moving away from the comfort zone required that not everyone would be interested in engaging with. It's fairly normal to want to stick with what works in my opinion.

I'm absolutely horrible at character action games, so I welcome the difficulty curve where it's easy if you want to just get through but hard to get perfect scores. In fact I kinda hate it if I'm forced to play a certain way or use certain builds in the middle of the game. I really hate Alatreon in MHW for forcing me to use elemental DPS weapon when the entire playthrough I was playing anything but that.

That being said I think QoL is a big factor. I'd try more skills and builds if it's easy enough to swap between sets, because why not. I change jobs all the time in XIV because it's literally just one click.

Saw a tweet point this out, but I wasn't aware that the director for this worked on Dissidia. I guess that explains why that new game mode gave me some Dissidia vibes... Specifically that uhh, I don't remember what it's called, but it was like this extra game mode in both (I think?) Dissidia titles that had this scrolling horizontal menu thingy... It had like its own level system stuff and loot, if I recall correctly. I just remember enjoying that mode and loving it like I did every aspect of Dissidia.

God I miss Dissidia so much. 😭

Guess I ought to get the season pass now to prepare for this since I haven't done Echoes of the Fallen yet. Should be fun getting back into XVI's combat. Although, maybe it'd be better to hold off until the patch drops since that comes with a bunch of those buffs. 🤔

Dissidia was frankly amazing for what it was. The best FF that came out of the PSP.

I feel like we'd never see it come back in that way unless it has gacha.

When in the game does the dlc take place?

I need to go back and finish the full game - I feel I was quite close to the end.

Holy shit yeah, Labyrinth lol kinda the same thing as Kairos Gate where you have to get equipment and buffs as you progress. The spirit of Dissidia lives on

Correct. There's a reason why deckbuilders are a niche genre, albeit a very prolific niche genre, that seems absolutely impenetrable to a huge chunk of the audience. There are people who WANT to spend all their time tinkering and making small adjustments and optimizing. And then there are people who just want to power through.

Games that don't allow the latter tend to remain stuck in the niche category because if you want a game to be mainstream you need to account for all kinds of player mindsets, not just one.

Ah, yeah, that one! And the first game's version was called "Duel Colosseum" apparently. Yeah...

I need Dissidia to live on in more than just spirit, but I'll take whatever I can get. 😭

I've already done a couple side quests this morning before work and the option to return to the quest giver is great. Very well integrated! I'll probably grab the DLC even though I'm only like a bit over halfway through the main game (like level 30)

It'll be out at midnight on the 18th in your region. Currently it's just out in New Zealand.

Ok so I turned on my PS5 and the game is indeed updating to version 1.003.001. It's also re-downloading Echos of the Fallen?

What's going on D:

Same here, Master Linus.
There was a patch for the DLC.

I don't see the quest anywhere. I think this was just the patch and a preload of the DLC I guess..

Map has more tilt/rotation control I think. Clive maybe moves faster at the Hideaway? Could be imagining it.

The DLC isn't out yet. Just the patch. The DLC is its own separate download.

Ah nice, I just assumed it was coming out Friday.

I guess no reviews? I know DLCs sometimes have them, sometimes don't.

There's an extra dialogue option from the main NPCs at the Hideaway now. Just a little bit of backstory.

Curious if Leviathan is the final boss of this DLC or not. It would be odd to spend the entire DLC not having its powers, only to defeat it and only get to use it for the final boss or end content lol

I like the idea that it might be Shinryu to counter

Omega
In the first DLC.

Cool that the patch was early.

I probably won't get around to starting the DLC until Friday because I decided to start a new FF mode run, but at least I'll be able to check out the new balance changes as I speedrun to the end.

This is an aside, and was obviously incorrect, but pre-release I had speculated that Shinryu would be the big bad of this game, with it being the "Drake" referenced in the names of the Mothercrystals.

I would love to see Shinryu as some sort of superboss. Gilgamesh too. I think, along with Omega, those classic FF bosses would fit so well into this action focused combat structure.

Clive just needs to fight its dominant first (I'm guessing), you get Garuda and Titan before the Eikon battles

I think I got around 30% into the game on PS5 before getting sidetracked by other games. Now I think I'll just wait for the complete PC version to play on my RTX 4070 Ti Super.

I need performance and image quality. Hopefully a way to fix the FOV as well. It is so uncomfortable on PS5.
