Installation error, game install from disc stops at 36%. No known workaround. Looks like discs are busted.

I have this exact issue with my physical copy of Spider-Man 2.

This is the first ever physical disc that I have received that didn't work. Maybe I'm lucky. But in this case it's not a one off since there's now several reports of the installation stopping at exactly 36%.

Printing error?

Damn, like people need fewer reasons to buy physical. Hope it's an easily fixable issue.

Sad. Sony should allow downloading the game when the disc is inserted as a safety net.

Sounds more like a scheme from big gamea to get people off of physical.

For real though I hope it gets fixed OP.

LOL, as a physical buyer this would be a new primal fear for me, discs that seem undamaged but don't work when you use them.

I wonder if it has something to do with the amount of data on the disc? Like the PS5 has issues when you go over 80GB or something?

Damn that's scary. Gonna grab my copy later today so hopefully everything's good. No reason they couldn't allow downloading the whole game and using the disc as a validation key, right?

Lol, same here. I was on physical media cloud 9 yesterday with an early delivery and an installation free of issues (US), but I'm not liking what this is going to add to the discussion.

Damn, what is up with these games having rough launches? Between this and the way Remastered was crashing PS5s when it released it seems wild to me that a 1st party studio is having these issues

I had this same thing happen with Pikmin on Wii U, except those games don't install. It just wouldn't boot. Bought it new at release from Best Buy. It's super frustrating.

Luckily I'm past the 36% but damn this is slow, is copying from the disc always an hour plus process?

That's doable (and more or less what happens when you do a PS4 to PS5 upgrade), but I'm not sure it's directly supported in the OS at the moment.

If this is a widespread issue, they may have to try something. Especially since it would keep being an issue as people buy up the first print run of the game (which is probably quite massive).

Yeah I mean now that they treat the digital and physical copies of game installations as the same, they could/should allow preloading of physical copies and you just stick the disc in to play when it arrives. Hell, doing that could lead to "conversions" for people who just gotta play it RIGHT NOW to just unlocking the digital and not buying the disc.

Unless the bad disc sector happens to trigger a failure for authentication! :D

I don't think it is all of them, as mine installed yesterday (US) without issue, but it looks pretty widespread with the amount of people popping up early today.

Never used it, but I know Xbox allows it and until just now I thought Sony did that too. Seems like a good thing to add for this kind of situation.

They need to be like Xbox and allow us to preload and download digital games that we haven't bought yet. That would allow for the disk to just act as a verification key. They're on the right track by now having the digital and physical install data be identical (I think)

At least you're living in normal countries and you can change the disc easily. There isn't any official gaming store or Sony representation here in Iran, because of sanctions.
So if I buy a broken disc, I can't do anything with it and the seller won't give my money back. I always buy discs and sell them after finishing the game (because of inflation and huge prices) and don't know what to do now. :|

I won't be able to install my copy for a few hours, now I'm terrified.

Edit: I do wonder if a fix is possible. Maybe treat the disc as a download key. People without internet would still need a new disc, though.

You reminded me of all those people who didn't discover that their Wii disc drive was defective until Smash Bros. Brawl came out because dual layered Wii games were so rare. But if this was a hardware issue surely it would have been a problem with other big games, right?

Wow, that's a super rough go for people who buy physical. I can't imagine waiting all that time for it arrive physically and then it's a lemon. Hopefully they can somehow patch that out and that it's not something with the discs themselves.

I'm picking mine up here shortly and wasn't planning on even installing it until after finishing Mario Wonder. Not waiting on that now. Hopefully it'll be fine.

it's really weird. I'm letting it retry and i'm at 16 hours left right now, but every once in a while it drops and copies some data, only for the time left to increase again.

But yea, seems are discs are completely useless.

It also sucks that it is the weekend now. Both the place I bought the game (online) and Sony support are closed now. I've put in tickets to get a new disc.

Anywho, for me it's not the biggest deal. I'm already juggling a few good games and I can wait on this. But it definitely is an annoyance... mostly the whole getting the game swapped deal.
