Physical games moving closer and close to that of 4K movies and vinyl records.

It also sucks that it is the weekend now. Both the place I bought the game (online) and Sony support are closed now. I've put in tickets to get a new disc.

Anywho, for me it's not the biggest deal. I'm already juggling a few good games and I can wait on this. But it definitely is an annoyance... mostly the whole getting the game swapped deal.
Wait, Sony support doesn't work Friday? Support is supposed to be working 24/7

I got a response from the store I got my copy from and they mentioned that they've already received about a dozen or so complaints from customer's who's game isn't working. They say they've reached out to Sony who informed them they're familiar with the issue and supposedly a patch is supposed to go live either today or this weekend to fix it. Though the store already points out that they don't know if that'll end up being true.

Friday until 4PM local time as far as I know. Not sure they work weekends. Maybe it's just phone support that is limited. Anyway, I dropped them a description of the issue via email.

Alright, mine finished installing now. Zero issues aside being a long install.

Maybe this is tied to your personal internet and downloading the day 1 patch?

I went digital for that sweet midnight unlock, but I'll try with my disc later. Wonder if it's a regional issue; a lot of the Redditors seem like they're in the UK.

Mine installed but took forever and now it's downloading a 37GB day-one update 🙄

This thread reminded me that I needed to pick up a disc copy since the special edition only comes with digital. That said, WTF, Best Buy is legit out of stock of physical copies until next week.

edit: Walmart's in my area are out of stock as well. Sony sending limited physical copies out or is game just that god damn hotly anticipated?

Asked two people and aside complaining about long install (it's definitely one of the longest installs on PS5) they also had no issues with physical.

This is going to be a long wait until mine arrives. I wonder if it's a regional or global problem since people in that reddit thread seem to be in the UK and Nordic areas.

There's no way this doesn't get fixed.

This is PlayStation.
Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation are technical experts and professionals. It may take a day or three days but it will be fixed.

Not sure how reliable this info is as it's from a redditor, but apparently Sony are aware and they'll be issuing a patch soon to fix the SM2 disc installation error.

I'm physical buyer too and have had similar issues with either stalling or extremely slow loading onto the PS5 on a few games.

I've remedied this by:

1. Disconnecting my PS5 from the internet first and letting the disc copy to SSD.

2. After full install, reconnect my PS5 to internet and download latest patch.

This has worked like a charm for me. 🤷🏻

If this is true, I'm glad I decided to wait until tomorrow to start a return.

Tried this and it didn't work.

Also tried clearing my cache and rebuilding my database. Put the PS5 in different positions. Cleaned every bit of the PS5.

I also tested installing Sonic Superstars and FF16 from the their discs, since the latter has a similar size. Both worked fine.

Damn that kinda sucks it a lottery when you buy physical. Can you just exchange it at least? Or do you have to wait?

Did you order from Coolshop by any chance?

Yup and when I asked for a return label so that I could sendt it back today, they had me run to Sony's support. Sony support answered that it is indeed a disc issue, so now I can take that info back to Coolshop who will probaby wait until monday before giving me a return label.

The big challenge will be getting a disc that actually works, if there's a ton of faulty discs in warehouses :/

Shit. So if it's a disc issue, does the mean there'll be no patch?

Do you have experience with returns to Coolshop? The faq says it takes 2 to 3 weeks, but that's so long đź’€

Probably not the cause for all these reported issues, but...

Just checked the front of my disc
No scratches there either.

Is there a way for physical buyers to basically grab the install from the PlayStation Store, but use the disc to authenticate and play?

I'm dubious of the patch solution and suspect it's just miscommunication.
I can't see Sony issuing an OS patch this weekend, they can't patch the game because it's not installed so the only "patch" solution I can think of is they mark the entirety of the data on disc as needing to be replaced by the online data.

I'm not even sure if that last one is an option and even if it is, it's not a total solution and realistically some people will still need a replacement disc.

This is the kind of thing that gives me a panic attack as a developer just thinking about. Even just pushing a build live I can quickly change if there is a problem. I can't imagine what it would feel like to press discs and have a problem somewhere along the way. At least Sony is big enough to fix the problem. That sucks though.

I guess the only thing they could do is prompt a full game download when you insert the disc. That is certainly preferable to no game.

I have bought a cubic assload of stuff from Coolshop over the years, going back to the early PS360 days. I've never had to return anything. This is also the first game ever on physical media where I've had an issue like this.

No scratches on my disc, but once I finished the install the game kept giving me an error saying it couldn't download the update. Trying to start the game without the update would just result in an immediate crash.

I have no clue if this is relatable, but I had a similar experience with a PlayStation game of recent (pretty sure it was either the OG Spiderman or Miles Morales) and after a ton of troubleshooting I had to start the install in safe mode to get it to work.

Has anyone with this issue tried to install in in safe mode?

It happened in Brazil with Horizon Forbidden West also.

That's a huge bummer because I never had a single issue like that across 6 other PlayStation platforms (1,2,3,4,Vita and PSP).

Stuff like this really makes me wish Sony would let you just download the digital copy that can't be ran without the disc.

Have you tried running the game with the internet connection turned off? Wonder if it is still trying to fetch some data and PSN servers might be on fire.

I opened up my copy(UK physical copy from TGC if it matters) and installed it just to check, but it seemed to go through fine. Installed from the disc okay, installed a downloaded update and then the game launched ok.

I... honestly can't remember. Tried a few things before biting the bullet and deleting the install to try again. If I run into the same problem that's certainly worth a shot though.

Here's hoping install #2 goes by without issue.

This is basically what installing in safe mode does (to my knowledge). I'm really hoping this is the root of the issue, because it has happened before with PlayStation installs.

My copy just arrived.

I have yet to open and attempt an install, but between this thread and the disc already flapping around (off the holder) within the case, not feeling super confident.

Just try it, it's not like you're gonna be left in the dust if it's defective. They have to replace the defective discs.

I tried installing offline and that seems (so far) to have fixed my problems: I can boot the game now and am currently downloading the update.
