Is it a realistic scenario that Nintendo will miss the 20 million units shipped for the Fiscal Year?
I think they projected in January 19.5m units and usually I would have said they would hit the 20m but we are talking global shortages so I am not sure anymore.

These are great expected numbers for AC. Digital sales will be very high for this title due to Corona situation. If Animal Crossing opens indeed >1.5M retail, this will definetly mean more than 2 Mio. sold units in general (including digital). This is very huge, especially for a leggy Game like AC.

We got PR for Pokemon on 11/21/19 (Thursday following release) for global sell-through and a few details that made it possible to infer digital %. So Wed numbers + Thursday PR hopefully gives us the full picture of the massive JP launch.

1,3 Mio. Units for EU + Other
1.1 Mio. Units for Northamerica (AC is not so popular there)

That means 4.6 units sold through for the opening weekend, which is a fantastic launch for a leggy game like AC. The shipped numbers till end of march should be around seven Mio. Units I guess.

Another thought. If FF7R and R3make underperform a month after AC breaks records I wonder what conversations that will start in those companies' boardrooms.

Worldwide is the main focus now but I can't imagine they'll be happy with the death of high-end consoles in Japan.

From their corporate website, the first GEO store was opened in June 1986 as video rental shop. I don't know if they started business in video gaming at the same time though.

What makes you think AC is not popular in North America? Retail reports so far indicate that it's potentially going to be one of the biggest Switch launches yet, if not the biggest (counting Pokemon SwSh separately, similarly to the UK report).

You're really underestimating western sales. New Leaf made the series as popular in the west as in Japan. The game did 3.5x New Leaf at launch in the UK. BenjiSales is talking massive sales in (a part of) the US market, even calling it one of the biggest Switch launches from his data so far. COMG! and Geo are talking huge quantities. And that's without digital, which has grown its share a lot organically since New Leaf came out.

New Horizons sells like a monster. It's up there with Pokémon, Smash, and Zelda now.

I thought Pokemon with all SKUs combined beat out Smash's launch in NA. Maybe I'm wrong about that?

Either way it had a massive launch in NA, somewhere up there with the biggest ones.

New Horizons sells like a monster. It's up there with Pokémon, Smash, and Zelda now.

I think that my western estimations are still quite huge. In UK it did ~130k on retail. Lets say that should be around 200k including digital. Multiplying it with 6 to 7 should give us a good estimation for the whole EU + Other-market, thats why I set 1.3 Mio. units there.

The game will surely launch very well in Northamerica with no doubt, but 1.1 Mio. Units is already a huge number. How good were the launch numbers of New Leaf back in the days in the US? It was quite low, so 1.1 Mio. Units is already a multiplier of 4 or something like this. So I think that my prediction is not so far from reality. Lets wait and see :)

I think Smash won out, it had a December launch after all. Honestly, I'm surprised AC is even in the same conversation. What is the source for NA launch numbers btw?

AC will never launch so highly in Northamerica, thats a massive overestimation guys. As I said, if it will sell through more than one million units within the first three days, this is already a very great launch for this IP. New Leaf sold 2.4 Million units in NA till TODAY, so it would be very weird to estimate such big numbers only for New Horizons opening weekend.

Smash Ultimate shipped 5 million units within 3 days, and had shipped 12.08 million units by the end of December 2018 (25 days of sale).
Pokémon Sword & Shield shipped 2 million units within 3 days in Japan, and another 2 million in North America; shipped 6 million units worldwide within six days; and had shipped 16.06 million units worldwide by the end of December 2019 (47 days of sale).

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will easily exceed those numbers in Japan, and it will battle those numbers in North America. Europe is the most questionable market in terms of sellthrough and size. New Horizons only has 11 days of sale in this quarter, so the quarterly shipment will be reduced by that, as well the lack of holidays. But we're talking launch here, and signs have been very positive.

We should not forget the digital share that has been massively increased since New Leaf released, which got another boost in a major part of the world by the coronavirus crisis.

Switch is also a much, much, MUCH more popular console in the US than the 3DS was. Prepare to be surprised by the NA numbers.

Smash sold 5m and Pokemon 6m at launch. Animal Crossing will be somewhere there too.

AC will never have an US-Launch that is comparable to Smash or Pokemon Sw/Sh. This will not happen. New Leaf and Wild World sold very weakly in US, so I highly doubt that NH will be on such a high opening level here now.

As I said: More than one million sold-through units will already be a great success for the games US-opening weekend :)

Japan: 2.2 Mio units (maybe even a bit more, lets say 2.4 Mio Units)
EU + Other: Lets say 1.4 Mio units
Northamerica: 1.1 Mio Units

That are 4.9 million sold-through units and most likely close to 6 million shipped units for the first three days.

He said North America. I think Smash did 3.6 million in December NPD and is still the best debut for a Nintendo game.

Either way, AC being among these games in North America is really impressive, even if it doesn't top them.
