100-150k for Paper Mario and 150-200k for Ghost of Tsushima will be the openings at retail, closer to low bound.

We usually talk about Japanese domestic market decline and practices from certain companies that honestly don't make much sense and sometimes I got the feeling as if they wanted to boycott themselves, and this week we have a perfect example of it.

On the one hand, we have Konami that releases simultaneously on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 maintaining the high sales of 2016 and 2018 entries thanks to multi-platform strategy. On the other hand, we have Bandai Namco that once again decided to skip the hottest Japanese platform for a medium-sized game (being generous) that to make things even funnier was born and found success in a portable platform, and when it comes to the international market I seriously doubt Xbox One is a better fit. Well, the results are clear and for everybody to see, Sword Art Online reaches a new franchise low. Perhaps there will be a logical explanation for this but I am unable to figure it out.

Self-fulfilling prophecy, admitting you were wrong about the way and kind of support your are providing to a platform seems to be the most hurtful thing for some of these publishers. So they just pretend like there is no other viable target platform and keep it moving. They are gonna rather PSV/PS4 looking games exclusive on a 1m PS5 install base then considering 15m Switch systems for anything that looks like a non-family title xD

At this point the only companies still engaging in this seem to be divisions within the biggest four pubs (Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Capcom, Sega) mostly under the direction of specific execs, and ass-backwards Falcom.

Otherwise Switch has the sort of universal industry support Nintendo hasn't seen since probably the golden Famicom/Gameboy/SuFami days.

True, it seems to to the case for divisions run by powerful executives that have enough pull to convince the board of why their projects cant or shouldn't target Switch. Those guys wont change their stance unless a money hat is involved - sad.

Japanese 3rd party publishers will soon see that they can't afford to be biased against Nintendo (& even Microsoft) anymore. The fanbase for PlayStation is constantly shrinking in Japan since the PS3, & it's not going to get any better with PS5, especially when development costs are continuing to rise within each generation. And most of their 3rd party series (IP's) are diminishing in popularity.

SAO's popularity is down a bit and the fact that the games started bad and have only gotten worse is why the franchise is where it is.

Another update of my favorite publisher for those who still don't want to understand the reason several Bandai Namco games skip Switch has nothing to do with power or targeting a different market (whatever that market is) but more with personal bias in favor of Sony / against Nintendo or both.

Yousuke Futami - producer of Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris. Didn't give a clear answer of whether Switch will get even a late port of it neither if it's possible or not. Everything under his supervision has skipped Switch and when he was asked for Hollow Fragment and whether it will be ported to Switch too (a Vita game that got remastered on PS4/PC) he raised development costs that make this port impossible for money reasons.

Kenji Nakajima - producer behind the port of Doraemon Story of Seasons on PlayStation 4, because as he said many PS4 users wanted to play this game. It won't have more than 10-20k lifetime sales in Japan.

Well considering how this new SAO runs on PS4 I shutter to think how Switch version would had run. Maybe late port in this case is actually preferable if its leads to game actually working.

And that's their loss. I really can't be arsed to get upset about crap like this anymore. My backlog is already far too big to be completed, considering I only play 1-2 hours a day due to being time constrained because of traveling every day, so I can't really be tethered to a TV to play a newly-released huge ass RPG as if I don't have to finish at least 5 JRPGs on my Switch (tbh that's a me-issue lmao). Not releasing a portable version of a game like SAO is simply stupid, even if it's possibly gonna be a late port in like 1,5 years cause, well, Bandai.

First main entry of Jikkyou on Nintendo systems after a decade means much better legs from last year's gimped release. The only that remains to be seen is how much Switch will eat into PS4 sales.

Funnily enough, Jikkyou may be one of the posterchilds of how different the Switch is compared to the Wii in terms of mid-long term userbase engagement

Isn't the switch version of Jikkyou Outselling the previous versions on Vita? That is pretty telling when this is mostly a "PlayStation" franchise

You can already see better sales from day one multiplat Switch games and people still deny that even mid tier games should get the resources to make it possible.

It's just baffling all around.

Don't forget that Disgaea 5 Complete on Switch apparently outsold the PS4 original in the west, a franchise that was all but purely Sony. It's why NISA went full throttle on Switch.

LMAO

LOL. We need that one poster that would always come into these threads and post something positive about Sony. I think I last saw him get excited about Sonmy passing 9M in sales in Japan. LOL. Not sure of his name though. I always chuckled when I saw his posts
I think it was Kerotan or something like that.

A lot of people remember Kerotan from other forums, and is evident that he only showed his "honest dumb" side in ERA. A few people that knew him called him troll since day 1 in resetera and that is why he didnt show his true power here, because he was already under vigilance.
But my question always was, did kerotan join resetera in the same month ( i think) that Psycho Mantis got perma ban? lol

That is likely purely coincidental

What was his "true power"? Was he a wizard?

A price cut for flagship Switch and a dockable revised Switch Lite could lead to even better sales in 2021.
I'm now fairly convinced that no scenario could lead to better sales in 2021 at this point. The Switch received the best selling game of the last 10-15 years in 2020, that isn't happening in 2021. There is a point where the market starts to get saturated too.

Nah, I saw him when I used to lurk a certain videogame sales forum, and he had the same gig over there, but people knew which buttons to press to get him and the innocent gig came crashing down pretty fast on threads
-----------

Pretty okay numbers overall, aside of Switch HW which just continues to shoot towards the heavens. Good to see Switch is beginning to take the lead in certain 3rd party game launches right from the get go. Hopefully RFA can get the stock issue settled out soon, with enough stock I imagine it could get to 2 million by the end of the year. Though have to be surprised with how low PS4 going, it seems to be going out pretty fast. When considering the usual Sony legs for hardware, I would had expected it to withstand a bit more, at least till the PS5 launch was close or until some months after the launch.

Others including me will say the games should get resources to make them bigger.
This voice is not baffling, right?

Why do you think they are mutually exclusive?
They are not mutually exclusive but doing both needs more resources than doing one.
And you know there are many bigger games that switch version released later even if all version announced at once, so I think being bigger is the natural first step for struggling mid tier games that will benefit by being bigger.

Some publishers love to make switch owners double dip, but I feel like that may honestly harm some games sales potential.

Throwing more resources at a shrinking base doesn't seem like the wiser investment.

Late ports are rarely an effective use of resources in this market these days. The natural step would be to build a larger base and then build upwards.
