It doesn't though (yet at least).
Software shipments after 9 quarters:
Switch: 210 million units shipped
Wii: 353 million units shipped
Wii was software monster in its early years.
This probably includes Wii Sports?

3DS had a long life length since Pokemon gave a boost at its final years but despite that total sales were very disappointing if you remove Japan from equation. That Switch beats it so easy at hardware and software confirms that.
Wii had way more retail games on the market in its early years though. also, that switch software number doesn't include sales for digital-only games (indies, stuff like naruto trilogy and so on).
Yeah. This is true. Wii had good software sales.
With the rise of digital software the comparison isn't as clean though. Lots of digital only software has performed well on Switch.
I was thinking more about the core Nintendo titles like Smash, Mario, Zelda specifically
I mean software shipments always include all bundled games (for all systems). It's also kinda moot point because Wii Sports was big system seller title for Wii (I mean it did near 4 million even in Japan where it was not bundled).

No, it wasn't ok, it's the weakest Nintendo handheld. Xbox One selling 50m doesn't make it any astonishing success, the system is basically in zombie state outside English speaking countries. It was disappointing compared to DS? But as a gaming device it was okay? It sold around 75mio worldwide. That was 60mio more than its direct competitor PSP. 50mio sold outside of Japan. More than many home consoles. I mean the XBoxOne will probably not manage to sell 50mio worldwide.
No chance for splatoon 2?Unlike Q1 there will be updates of Japanese shipments for a big number of titles at Wednesday.
Super Mario Maker 2
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Maybe some of these too
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Party
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
Astral Chain
There could also be mention of Ring Fit sales.
True but it was bundled abroad meaning that you either got a Wii + Wii Sports or got nothing during the first years.

I won't have done 1M this FY already, but we can determine its shipments from the top 10 software chart
You're listing numbers with Famitsu's digital estimates FYI. Could you post the retail numbers instead? Black Ops 4 only sold 511K at retail for example.Sounds like PS4 is headed for a steep decline compared to last year's record, then. Here's COD's performance throughout the generation, sorted by launch sales (and by LTD sales as well, incidentally. Numbers by Gamedatalibrary):
Code:PS4 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 233.762 666.816 SIE 12/10/2018 PS4 Call of Duty: WWII 170.996 459.523 SIE 03/11/2017 PS4 Call of Duty: Black Ops III 147.204 412.822 SCE 06/11/2015 PS4 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare 100.877 215.818 SIE 04/11/2016 PS4 Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare - Subtitled Edition 68.261 98.564 Square Enix 13/11/2014
BLOPS4 was a crazy performance for the franchise. Will be interesting to see if MW can beat WWII and BLOPSIII on PS4 (BLOPSIII had a PS3 sku as well). That would put it at 170k+ (if WWII is beaten) or 150k+ (if BLOPSIII is beaten), which is not too bad, although at 150k it would rank among some of more unimpressive performances for COD in the last two gens in Japan.
Yes, I can. I was focused on FW sales, so I didn't really consider the difference in this case (FW numbers don't include digital). Here goes (Gamedatalibrary again):You're listing numbers with Famitsu's digital estimates FYI. Could you post the retail numbers instead?

Mario Kart DS was no spin-off. Mario Kart 7 was called that simply because it was the seventh entry, while DS was the fifth.
Actually Nintendo used to give out VC updates early on in Wii's lifecycle in interviews or IR Q&As. The last update iirc reflected the first 5 quarters and said VC sales were over 10 million. As of the 7th quarter VC (which had been significantly overperforming expectations) was deemphasized in favor of WiiWare (which continually underperformed) and we stopped getting any unit figures although we did sometimes get value updates for both.I mean digital only titles make comparisons somewhat harder but as we don't have concrete data on them we have to go with data we have.
Nintendo provided information in one of the quarterly briefings that indicated the average spend on games for switch owners is significantly higher than previous Nintendo systems including the Wii.It doesn't though (yet at least).

There aren't Mario Kart spin offs, every handheld and home console entry is main. Only the arcade games are non numbered and we'll see what will happen with Mario Kart Tour.

Sure. But the original post was about software sales themselves (or I thought it was heh) so I just corrected that. I mean the same goes for PS4 that average spending per title is way higher than on something like PS2 (which is big part of the reason for record profits of gaming division).Nintendo provided information in one of the quarterly briefings that indicated the average spend on games for switch owners is significantly higher than previous Nintendo systems including the Wii.
This matches what we have seen so far with so many successes on the switch. While the Wii software shipments are impressive it also had a higher install base, Wii sports and Wii play were included and no digital.
The switch has thousands of digital only games that are not included in shipment data and dozens of free to play Gaas titles that bring in a lot of money (fortnite only is a beast).
Since it's impossible to calculate the value of all this we should be going off the chart provided by Nintendo that shows the switch is dwarfing the software spend compared to previous consoles

Fair enough. Somehow thought that it was higher effort because of being numbered title. There aren't Mario Kart spin offs, every handheld and home console entry is main. Only the arcade games are non numbered and we'll see what will happen with Mario Kart Tour.
oops my bad I have tired eyws ans read rhis as PS5. Sorry guys...Sinobi (Amazon data)
P5R has strong pre-orders, it should have good opening.
P5S had great start, pre-orders 6:4 in favour of PS4.
lolif they have good support the first 2 years then I see PS5 doing much better numbers than PS4 did. A exclusive MH would be the ideal situation and I strongly believe Sony is going to push Capcom to make a next gen only version. Its not a bad idea because having strong games early on can be very beneficial to publishers because it creates a massive migration to next gen and also creates high sales for premier games.
You can at least give an argument against and not just lol
?? Read again.
I guess that's what I'm trying to say is that the switch is selling more software than the Wii we don't have a good direct comparison though.Cool. Didn't remember that. Shame that they stopped doing that. Weird that they still don't give any concrete sales data of digital only titles on Switch considering that by all accounts indies have done well on the system.

Nah, I'd trust Amazon to have better info personally. Though if Sinobi's data applies to more retailers than Amazon then it'd be understandable to have a different apparent ratio.
Do you expect Ring Fit to have a good drop as it is still No.1 on Amazon jpSinobi lost the Famitsu subscription source but has direct access to Amazon data for years now.

Correct. Not to mention Nintendo supported 3DS way more than any of their previous handhelds. They threw almost everything they had behind it (especially after WiiU bombed out of the gates).
Do we have any official number breakdowns by major region for GB, GBA, DS, and 3DS? I didn't realize it's North America sales were so disappointing (though I think I remember them being the lowest, but not half of GBA low).3DS sales performance outside Japan were disappointing compared to any Nintendo handheld consoles (not just DS).
Switch is a far more healthy platform (and the company profits reflect that).

Correct.
The only reason 3DS sold overall (slightly) more software than GBA was that Nintendo software production was behind it in a way it wasn't with GBA.
It helped that 3DS was the first handheld console strong enough to replicate in a satisfactory enough way most 3D experiences Nintendo used to produce for home console previously.
It made less and less sense for Nintendo to develop two version of the same franchise for two wildly different hardware architectures each generation.

Yep, it's RE5 and RE6. Could have sworn they already released...
