I'm just curious since making modest amounts of money from a game that has very good reception and high download counts seems to mean that they're being very pro-consumer which is good for players but is it sustainable in the long run?
Well, it's probably good for the "What have I done to deserve this, My Lord?" brand, and a fairly positive sign for SCEJ internal mobile development that their first game was both popular and well liked, with a bottom of the top 100 daily grossing rank to boot, but it's not going to be a meaningful contributor to earnings for Sony or even the PlayStation division unless something changes, which is the explicit goal of ForwardWorks.

How is getting gazillion downloads and good reviews a bad thing?
I'm looking at it from both sides. From a consumer's POV, having a good mobile game while not having to spend much is a good thing. On the other hand, if the game doesn't make enough money to justify its existence they might just kill the game some time down the line.

If making fun games without egregious paywalls is their goal then I applaud them for that and I hope that whatever they do is sustainable.

Nintendo didn't even give it a chance. The edition that the Bayonetta fans wanted with 2 physical carts was sold out months ago. I personally know 3 people who would have bought it if the could.

*Snip*

Bayonetta is not a mainstream series in Japan. There is a devoted but very limited fan base. And they are likely collectors. To release so few copies of the most desirable version is crazy.

Or maybe I'm just mad. The Climax Edition is so beautiful, I wish more people could get their hands on it.

nah, if they're gonna keep a niche series alive as a prestige game and source of lineup diversity, they really would be better off nurturing the market for it instead of the usual nintendo approach to special editions, where they act like they're doing us a favor by offering to take more of our money and ask us to jump through hoops to buy the things.

It doesn't have to generate massive revenue out of the gate, mobage is a GaaS, it need sustain.

As the game evolves and remains popular, they will fine ways to monetize the game more.

Sony has considerable resource stop keep plugging at a market if they want to. Unlike Nintendo, Sony also wouldn't be prone to self sabotage, especially not this generation's Sony.

Osaka
So for the first time ever I saw the Switch in stock at the Abenobashi's Big Camera. Looks like the weekends shipment was not completely sold.

I hate this sooooo much as Badman IP had been degraded into this skull of game. Holy goddo.

Korean console developer IGGYMOB partnered up with Sega Games for distributing their console game in Japan.

They also made third party partnership with SIE for PS VR, PS4 titles and Nintendo for Switch, and as of now they are developing 2 PS VR titles and 1 PS4 title for 2018~2019 release.

Price gradation is a big problem with PS4 in Japan.

When almost every company aims for the high end it's expected many games will bomb, especially those who try to appeal at more casual friendly audiences.

looking back at what Pokken, Xenoverse, and FIFA opened at and then seeing them now is crazy.

Even arms, which left the top 20 a few times back then.

only FEW didn't make it.

Pokken Tournament on Wii U needs 10k sales to sell the initial shipment and Pokken Tournament DX on Switch has run out of stock several times.

You should wait for actual sales numbers before jumping the gun on basing a game's sales performance on a prediction:

True

I assume getting a massive base and great reception is initially more important that your monetisation scheme which could hinder the former if too aggressive.
So its probably great news for ForwardWorks for showing they have the capability of making attractive mobile games, which was in question before.

I thought MinGol was very popular?

It just didn't make much money.

On a slightly related note I saw that Asano/Takahashi specifically sought out Acquire for Octopath Traveller based on theith work on No Heroes Allowed.(or whatever it's called now)

Skyrim could be the next game that gets a Switch leg boost. I wonder if this will be the status quo with Switch releases in general. Relatively low first week sales compared to LTD. It certainly seems to happen with a lot of games. Maybe even surprise million sellers in the long run.

I'm curious to see how the next Boku no Natsuyasumi game will perform on mobile. I don't see this franchise fitting the mobile landscape but they could bank on nostalgia. Surely, I'd like to see a new entry on consoles. Not port-begging, but this franchise right now makes more sense multi-platform (I know it's Sony's).

If it is not done for mobile it probably won't ever be done. Sony seems to be pretty divested in developing anything themselves to target the Japanese market on PS4.

Wonder if PS4 hardware sales will outsell Switch a 4th week in a row this week, very impressive MHW effect, to take an entire month as top selling console if so - when the system pretty much never saw that placement before I believe.

I think it will, as there's no real indication that the Switch is selling more this week. I expect the same 40k, while the PS4 could do 50-60k. Might be the last week though.

Somewhere. I think.
Not surprising, both versions of the game have shown terrible legs, though neither were overshipped. Makes you wonder how many people are actually waiting for Switch version, though I doubt that'll something we will ever know.

Unless they add something extra for DQ 11 on Switch, it will not do well at all. It seems like DQ 11 is not really as huge as DQ 9 due to the lack of multiplayer. If the next DQ 12 failed to intergrate multiplayer, the sales will see more decline.

Well, they might see a bigger rise in the West. And I am assuming they are now planning to release both the Switch and PS4 version on the same day - and they might add voice acting and an orchestral soundtrack, with option to turn off both.

Also, PC is always an option, too.

It's the third time this week gamesmaya talks for sharp decline at in store traffic because everyone watches Japan at winter Olympics.
