I wonder how MGS3 will play with KB+Mouse. I wish this was a proper remaster with modernized controls...
IF it's supported, I think they will try to emulate a stick with the mouse with terrible results.
There is little to no chances to have a proper mouse movement, it isn't a simple thing to implement if the game/porting wasn't made with that in mind.

Reviews are out apparently. No idea how you rate this (the games, or the remasters, or both?), but from what I'm reading it does seem decent (and also a bit lazy.)

77 Opencritic after 13 reviews.

Curious if we'll get the proper DF Retro & Analysis breakdown - that's what I'm looking forward to the most!

But they are the definitive versions of the games?
I won't argue that they couldn't have done more, but they're clearly the best available versions of the games.
To me, the definitive version of a game should have "everything". So this isn't it.
(And I can't believe you can't play the English translations with the original voices... Won't change anything for me: I'll just play the Japanese versions, as usual, but I was really hoping a lot more players would finally get to experience the original performances...)

"Konami has added the option to pause cutscenes, but for some reason it takes just over 10 seconds after pressing the pause button to trigger and can only be done in Metal Gear Solid."

From the Gamespot review. What a weird thing, presumably related to how they are emulating the PS1 version which isn't applicable to the HD Collection versions of 2&3.

This has already been proven wrong - or was patched or applies only to say, Switch.

There's NO 10 Second Pause Delay During Cutscenes - Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 [PS5]

Unless the issue has been addressed or whether it depends on what platform you have the game on, I didn't encounter any 10 second pause delays on PS5. *THIS ...

It's kind of wild how spread opinions are on this. But it's still nice to have the games in one place. Hopefully that will continue into Volume 2 if that ever happens.

I was a bit averse to MGS not being smooth like the GOG version but after an hour I was pretty happy with it all and didn't notice anything major. The lower quality visuals make up for the unstable PC version, though it still would've been nice to have the option given how many options there are .

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Review - Kept You Waiting, Huh?

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 bundles some of the most influential video games of all time in one comprehensive package, providing an extensive history of stealth-action.

8/10

  • "Performance is excellent across every game"

Compared to their sources, this is fair. No dips. No drops. No glitches

Completed MGS1 yesterday and just started Big Shell in MGS2. Performance is good

Konami Confirms Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Issues to Be Addressed Post-Launch - IGN

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 launches this week with a number of issues, Konami has said. Post-launch updates are planned to address them.

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 launches this week with a number of issues, Konami has said. Post-launch updates are planned to address them.

Let's start with the bonus content for the Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge NES ports. In the bonus content videos, the timing of some subtitles doesn't match up with the audio. Konami said it's planning a patch that will correct the timing. A post-launch patch is planned to add a number of visual options in the games, including a CRT scanline filter and the ability to change the pixel aspect ratio.

Moving on to the MSX2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, a future patch will add the ability to switch between windowed and full-screen mode from the options menu in the title screen.

Across Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3, bug fixes are also planned Specifically on MGS 2, Konami warned the game may significantly slow down in certain cutscenes, which sounds worrying. A patch to reduce processing load is planned.

There's also a slight delay to the timing for a certain visual effect, with a patch to correct it to match the original game due out at some point. And finally, switching between windowed and fullscreen mode from the options menu on the title screen is planned for a future update.

Specifically on MGS3, there are typos in the subtitles for the original England, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain (EFIGS) EU versions. The timing for a scene and background music to trigger in a certain cutscene is slightly different from the original game, too. A patch to sort all this out, alongside the, yes, you guessed it, ability to switch between windowed and full-screen mode, is planned.

It's kind of wild how spread opinions are on this.

Honestly even reading the reviews it just comes down to what you are looking for out of it.

If you're looking for a collection of games and supporting content about the franchise in one place this is it. Multiple reviews have confirmed the games are stable, framerate is good, etc.

If you're looking for a 4K experience this absolutely not it.

For me, the GameSpot review ended with what I want:

There are other ways to play these games, but I think we often undersell the appeal of convenience. Being able to easily access them all on a modern console is a major selling point. For someone like me, who only ever owned the original games on their original consoles, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 is indispensable.

Interesting on the IGN post

'slowdown on certain cutscenes' - didn't notice any on MGS1 and im usually sensitive to that stuff

Didn't notice any yet on MGS2 but again I've only completed Tanker.

Was super expecting slowdown shenanigans with the rain on the boat if anything, but nope. Will post if I hit anything bad.

So, if I have HD collection on the Xbox and can play it on the Series X, is there any real difference between that and this for playing MGS2 and MGS3?

The 1.0 disc version on PS4 was definitely affected as we've seen streamed footage from that over the last week showing the issue.

So good that this seems to have been patched already.

I'll buy this on Steam sooner or later, most likely later as I'm busy with other games.

I was going to buy the collection on Switch day one (physical) but the cart is apparently a 2 GB coaster with almost nothing on it, not even Metal Gear Solid. They could at least have put the games on the cart and have the video extras as additional downloads. Most useless release ever. That's a skip on Switch.

Bummer about 2 and 3 framerate on Switch, not a stickler for fps but for those titles that's just weird. Any chance it gets patched?

Bugs fixed from the HD Collection

List of bugs introduced by the HD Collection and if the Master Collection fixed it or not in v.1.0.0 - Pre-patch.
There could be more fixes now that some patches are out.

Aside: why the fuck wasn't the HD Collection thrown under a bus for introducing all these bugs?

MGS2:
  • Broken Shaver mechanic for Snake/codec call in Arsenal Rectum (Snake with no beard doesn't work in Arsenal Gear) (Fixed in Master Collection)
  • Coolant doesn't fog up mirrors
  • Colonel codec animations missing the Ghost Babel/MGS1 colonel portraits that should be there when the AI starts going crazy
  • During the cutscene preceding the battle with Fortune, the sea lice around her feet appear on random playthroughs (PS3 version)
  • During the cutscene where Raiden and Pliskin discuss Dead Cell, George Sears' first name is misspelled as "Gorge" (Introduced in MGS2 Substance)
  • Game seems to be darker which could be a result of the game being outputted through HDMI while the PS2 original outputted a composite video signal
  • Grenades take longer to explode
  • In-game credits during cutscenes are written in a different color (Fixed in Master Collection)
  • Lightning during the intro cutscene looks incorrect
  • Metal Gear RAY models not having the correct serial numbers stamped on them (A01E, A02E, A03E on all the RAYs, despite the health bars showing B01F, C01H, etc.)
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 logo in the opening is much smaller then in the original version (Fixed in Master Collection)
  • Pause/delay before codec calls (Fixed in Master Collection)
  • The laser sight on Snake's gun is missing in the boss fight cutscene against Olga
MGS3:
  • Alert state change load glitch (X360 version)
  • Bike chase crash glitch
  • Certain visual effects are reduced to the point where they are seemingly missing such as depth of field and rain (some fixed in Master Collection)
  • Cigar flickers when running
  • FPV Analog Acceleration (X360 version)
  • Low resolution splitter face paint
  • MiG-21 radar display sweeping the wrong direction in Operation Snake Eater intro
  • Pause/delay for changing camouflage, the cure menu etc. (Fixed in Master Collection)
  • Smoke and particle effects running at double speed
  • The Fury does things like attacking the wrong way and using his abilities during hitstun. Also at higher framerates a much larger amount of fire can persist on the ground which can be be especially seen on xbox series x/s since the game runs at a stable 60fps (Tied to framerate)
  • The Snake Eater song in the beginning is out of sync due to the removal of the ambient noise that normally plays when "Konami Entertertainment Presents" is onscreen (Fixed in Master Collection)
  • The Pain's bullet bee will not hit Snake in first person view, because of the game running at 60fps (Tied to framerate)

Anyone in Japan grab a physical copy of this yet? Heard that release might have a bit more on the cart than the US/PAL and wanted to know if that's indeed the case.

Edit: Apparently there's no game on the PAL cart, even MGs1 needs a download

Always though it was weird that 3 got a remake when 4 is clearly the one most in need.

It actually does make some sense.

MGS3 stands on its own plot-wise because chronologically this is where it all started. MGS4 asks a LOT from it's player regarding the plot. You really need to have played MGS3 first to understand what's going on (and MGS1 and 2). It would have been a tough sell to newcomers but anyone who bought Delta and liked it will go for MGS4 in whatever form it takes when it comes to modern consoles.

There are HEAPS of points where there's slowdown. The area before the rappel where something explodes is a good example.

Okay the new L1+R1 pause menu in MGS1 is so much quicker now. It was never 10+ seconds, but it definitely needed a moment to load pre-patch.

Still can't see the separate purchase options for each individual game on the Microsoft Store. As I have played the HD collection already, I hope they will unlock this option tomorrow. MGS 1 finally on Xbox!

Language packs are still not on the PS Store yet which means no MGS for me today as I refuse to return to PAL hell.

Hopefully will be up soon as it is now launch day in some countries.

bought this on pc so i never have to care about how heavy MGS3 is to emulate.
Hopefully modders fix whatever needs to be fixed sooner rather than later, or do stuff like MGS Fix does for the MGS2 GOG release (8k internal rendering, etc)

??

That's just not true.

It is, did you not follow the last few days? It seems like the HD collection games as well as MGS1 are internally upscaling the resolution from 720p to 1080p via bilinear filtering, which makes them look blurrier as playing the native PS1 version of MGS1 or the PS3/Xbox 360 versions of the HD collection.

It's neither a clean 1080p nor a clean 720p. It's a shit bilinear upscaling which ruins the picture clarity.

I have followed the last days, and that's not how bilinear filtering looks or works. The games look the same at worst.

MGS1 in this looks awful and not at all what the native PS1 game looks like, that's a fact for one. It seems at least this game uses bilinear upscaling/filtering/whatever, 100%. This is not a clean 240p to 1080p nearest neighbor scale.
Putting in the PS1 disc into a PS3 gives a way cleaner result than this.

And MGS2 and 3 are also not as clean looking in comparison to the direct HD collection from the 360. It's definitely not the same.

It's slightly worse, but saying it "ruins" the clarity is a bit of an overstatement.

The thing is for what they were, which are 720p, they always looked surprisingly good on a 4K TV, thanks to the clean engine these games use. I still remember a DF video about the collection some time ago and was shocked to get reminded that what they showed there was just 720p. It scaled really well.
But with whatever they did here, that bonus is now gone too. So now you have a 720/1080p whatever thing that doesn't even upscale as well anymore, so yeah, now it completely lost it's appeal and I personally would say "ruins". Cause what they had before, kinda worked, even tho it shouldn't, but it did.
But now even that is gone.

But of course, everyone has their own preferences.
My point still stands that they look somewhat worse than before and in the situation if you have the HD collection already, like this one user, they should stick with that.
