    A Request Regarding Spoilers

While the Master Collection series will bring back many longtime Metal Gear fans who will be replaying the games, it will also help to bring in new players who will be experiencing the series for the first time, including on this forum. As such, please do not assume that everyone in this thread already knows the story of the series.

When discussing spoilers for any game in the series, please use proper spoiler tags that make it clear what game you're discussing. That way, longtime players can discuss the series' narrative, while also providing a space for new players to talk about their experiences for the first time without worry of being spoiled.

If you know the wild twists, turns, and surprises that this series has, then you probably also know how impactful many of them can be. Let's not ruin that for those who are coming in for the first time.

If you're new to the series, keep in mind that the Master Books contain spoilers for the entire Metal Gear series, not just the games in this collection. For example, page five of the Master Book for Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake contains a pretty major spoiler from one of the later games that isn't in this collection. So if you haven't already played the entire series - including MGS4, Peace Walker, MGS5, etc. - you might want to avoid reading the Master Books as a general rule of thumb.

The game warns you about spoilers from across the series when you attempt to open the Master Books, but I just wanted to emphasize the fact that they contain spoilers for the whole series and not just the games in Master Collection Vol. 1. I'm sure some people might skip through the warning without realizing its full meaning.

    Metal Gear
    • Original developer: Konami
    • Original release year: 1987
    • Original platform: MSX2
    Destroy the Metal Gear...

In 1995, a South African military fortress known as Outer Heaven develops a terrifying new type of nuclear weapon, known as Metal Gear, that will shape the future of modern warfare. Gray Fox, a member of the U.S. special forces unit FOXHOUND, infiltrates the base to learn more, but goes radio silent. FOXHOUND commander Big Boss sends another operative to locate Gray Fox, investigate Metal Gear, and destroy it. That operative is Solid Snake. His legendary tale of heroism starts here.

The original MSX2 version of Metal Gear, as depicted in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, is included with Metal Gear Solid (Master Collection ver.).

    Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
    • Original developer: Konami
    • Original release year: 1990
    • Original platform: MSX2
The beauty of infiltration versus destruction

In 1999, the small country of Zanzibar Land stockpiles nuclear armaments and captures Dr. Kio Marv, who has bioengineered OILIX, a microbe capable of producing petroleum. U.S. special forces unit FOXHOUND, now commanded by Roy Campbell, calls on Solid Snake to infiltrate the country and rescue Dr. Marv. This story chronicles the intense confrontation between Big Boss and Solid Snake—two men bound by duty and fate.

The original MSX2 version of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, as depicted in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, is included with Metal Gear Solid (Master Collection ver.).

    Metal Gear Solid
    • Original developer: Konami Computer Entertainment Japan
    • Original release years: 1998 (MGS1), 1999 (Integral, VR Missions)
    • Original platform: PlayStation
    Epoch-making nuclear hijacking

In 2005, the nuclear weapons facility on Shadow Moses Island in Alaska falls under the control of special forces unit FOXHOUND, who is in search of Big Boss's corpse. They issue an ultimatum: if their demands aren't met within 24 hours, they will launch a nuclear strike. Former FOXHOUND member Solid Snake, shocked to learn the terrorist plot is spearheaded by a similar-looking Liquid Snake, is called upon to infiltrate the island. It's an epic tale of genes, destiny, conspiracy, and treachery.

Master Collection Vol. 1 includes the original 1998 and 1999 PlayStation versions of Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid: Integral, and Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
    • Original developer: Konami Computer Entertainment Japan
    • Original release year: 2001
    • Original platform: PlayStation 2
    The ever-present threat of terrorism

Following the Shadow Moses Incident, the top-secret technology of Metal Gear REX was leaked into the black market by Revolver Ocelot, causing countless variations of Metal Gear to spring up across the globe. In 2007, Solid Snake, now a member of the anti-Metal Gear NGO "Philanthropy", learns that a new prototype Metal Gear developed by the U.S. Marines is being transported secretly along the Hudson River. Snake infiltrates the transport, which is disguised as a tanker, but just as his mission begins, the tanker is seized by a mysterious armed group with ties to Ocelot. The passing of cultural elements and behaviors from one person to another serves as a foundation for the story.

The content of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in Master Collection Vol. 1 is based on the 2011 HD Collection version.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
    • Original developers:
      • Konami Computer Entertainment Japan (Snake Eater)
      • Kojima Productions (Subsistence)
    • Original release year: 2001
    • Original platform: PlayStation 2
The Cold War Crisis that started it all

During the Cold War, Naked Snake is deployed to the U.S.S.R. to rescue Soviet scientist Sokolov, but the mission ends in failure after the betrayal of his master and "The Mother of Special Forces", The Boss. Sokolov is then recaptured by GRU Colonel Volgin. One week later, Snake receives new orders to return to Soviet territory to rescue Sokolov and eliminate The Boss—a mission that will shape the course of history. The epic saga of Metal Gear and the birth of the legendary hero Big Boss starts here.

The content of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in Master Collection Vol. 1 is based on the 2011 HD Collection version.

    Features

The games in Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 are available in different regional versions, allowing players to experience the series in multiple different languages. This includes the previously Japan-exclusive PlayStation version of Metal Gear Solid: Integral that includes various changes, additional modes, and extra unlockables. Extra books relating to each main game are also included, allowing players to expand their knowledge and enjoyment of the series. These books can be accessed from each game's main menu screen.

    • Digital Screenplay Books: Comprehensive collections of cutscene dialogue, briefing files, and scripts for every single one of the series' characteristic Codec calls.
    • Digital Master Books: Packed with juicy tidbits and notable quotes from characters throughout the Metal Gear saga—plus useful strategy guide info such as maps, hidden item locations, and more.

Additionally, in the first Metal Gear Solid, PlayStation save data for other Konami titles (such as Policenauts, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Silent Hill) can be generated for use during certain gameplay content. The titles available to generate save data for are determined by the regional version of Metal Gear Solid that is being played.

    • Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel - This fully-voiced digital comic from 2006 depicts the events of Metal Gear Solid through beautifully dynamic animated panels, illustrated by Ashley Wood.
    • Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel - This 2008 sequel to Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel depicts the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, with art from Ashley Wood and full voice acting.

    Changes from Previous Releases

The games in Master Collection Vol. 1 have several changes and fixes compared to previous releases of the series, including the HD Collection from 2011. While this post won't cover all changes made, several of the more notable ones found around the time of release are detailed below.
    • All games:
      • The text and control icons of each game in the collection have been updated to reference buttons corresponding to the platform the game is being played on. For example, in MGS1, the icon for the Select Button has been replaced by an icon for the - Button on Switch, an icon for the View button on Xbox, and an icon for the Touch Pad on PlayStation.
    • Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2:
      • These games are now launched via their own dedicated app, as opposed to being launched from MGS3's menus like they were in the HD Collection.
      • When buying games individually rather than buying the complete collection, these two games are now included with a purchase of MGS1, rather than MGS3 like in Subsistence and the HD Collection.
    • Metal Gear Solid:
      • On Nintendo Switch, any voiced dialogue referencing a PlayStation button is now muted. For example, Colonel Campbell's line where he says "When you want to use the Codec, push the Select Button" is now completely silent. However, the text is still there, with it now saying to push the - Button as described above. Dialogue being muted is exclusive to the Switch version of the game; on all other platforms, voices are left intact, with only the text being changed.
    • Metal Gear Solid 2:
      • On Nintendo Switch, the game is capped at 30 FPS. All other platforms retain the 60 FPS cap from the HD Collection version.
      • The logo in the opening is sized more similarly to the logo's proportions in the original PlayStation 2 version as opposed to the HD Collection version.
      • The credits in MGS2 are now colored similarly to the credits in the original PS2 version as opposed to the HD Collection version.
      • In the HD Collection, Codec calls had a delay before they played. This has been fixed in the Master Collection version.
      • The shaver bug from the HD Collection version has been fixed.
      • Similar to the HD Collection version, the skateboarding minigame has been omitted.
    • Metal Gear Solid 3:
      • On Nintendo Switch, the game is capped at 30 FPS. All other platforms retain the 60 FPS cap from the HD Collection version.
      • The music during the opening is no longer out of sync like it was in the HD Collection.
      • The delay that was introduced in the HD Collection when changing camouflage and opening the Cure menu has been fixed.
      • Some visual effects from the PS2 version that were toned down or missing in the HD Collection version have been restored.
      • Similar to the HD Collection version, the Snake vs. Monkey minigame and the Secret Theater have been omitted and replaced by the Demo Theater.
    Pre-Order Bonus

Pre-ordering Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 will grant you access to three exclusive tracks in the collection's in-game sound player. These new tracks were all produced by Rasmus Faber, arranged for orchestra, and recorded specially for this collection.
    • THE BEST IS YET TO COME (Master Collection ver.)
    • CAN'T SAY GOODBYE TO YESTERDAY (Master Collection ver.)
    • SNAKE EATER (Master Collection ver.)

Konami Confirms Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Issues to Be Addressed Post-Launch - IGN

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 launches this week with a number of issues, Konami has said. Post-launch updates are planned to address them.

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 launches this week with a number of issues, Konami has said. Post-launch updates are planned to address them.

Let's start with the bonus content for the Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge NES ports. In the bonus content videos, the timing of some subtitles doesn't match up with the audio. Konami said it's planning a patch that will correct the timing. A post-launch patch is planned to add a number of visual options in the games, including a CRT scanline filter and the ability to change the pixel aspect ratio.

Moving on to the MSX2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, a future patch will add the ability to switch between windowed and full-screen mode from the options menu in the title screen.

Across Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3, bug fixes are also planned Specifically on MGS 2, Konami warned the game may significantly slow down in certain cutscenes, which sounds worrying. A patch to reduce processing load is planned.

There's also a slight delay to the timing for a certain visual effect, with a patch to correct it to match the original game due out at some point. And finally, switching between windowed and fullscreen mode from the options menu on the title screen is planned for a future update.

Specifically on MGS3, there are typos in the subtitles for the original England, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain (EFIGS) EU versions. The timing for a scene and background music to trigger in a certain cutscene is slightly different from the original game, too. A patch to sort all this out, alongside the, yes, you guessed it, ability to switch between windowed and full-screen mode, is planned.

Bugs fixed from the HD Collection

List of bugs introduced by the HD Collection and if the Master Collection fixed it or not in v.1.0.0 - Pre-patch.
There could be more fixes now that some patches are out.

Aside: why the fuck wasn't the HD Collection thrown under a bus for introducing all these bugs?

    MGS2:
    • Broken Shaver mechanic for Snake/codec call in Arsenal Rectum (Snake with no beard doesn't work in Arsenal Gear) (Fixed in Master Collection)
    • Coolant doesn't fog up mirrors
    • Colonel codec animations missing the Ghost Babel/MGS1 colonel portraits that should be there when the AI starts going crazy
    • During the cutscene preceding the battle with Fortune, the sea lice around her feet appear on random playthroughs (PS3 version)
    • During the cutscene where Raiden and Pliskin discuss Dead Cell, George Sears' first name is misspelled as "Gorge" (Introduced in MGS2 Substance)
    • Game seems to be darker which could be a result of the game being outputted through HDMI while the PS2 original outputted a composite video signal
    • Grenades take longer to explode
    • In-game credits during cutscenes are written in a different color (Fixed in Master Collection)
    • Lightning during the intro cutscene looks incorrect
    • Metal Gear RAY models not having the correct serial numbers stamped on them (A01E, A02E, A03E on all the RAYs, despite the health bars showing B01F, C01H, etc.)
    • Metal Gear Solid 2 logo in the opening is much smaller then in the original version (Fixed in Master Collection)
    • Pause/delay before codec calls (Fixed in Master Collection)
    • The laser sight on Snake's gun is missing in the boss fight cutscene against Olga
    MGS3:
    • Alert state change load glitch (X360 version)
    • Bike chase crash glitch
    • Certain visual effects are reduced to the point where they are seemingly missing such as depth of field and rain (some fixed in Master Collection)
    • Cigar flickers when running
    • FPV Analog Acceleration (X360 version)
    • Low resolution splitter face paint
    • MiG-21 radar display sweeping the wrong direction in Operation Snake Eater intro
    • Pause/delay for changing camouflage, the cure menu etc. (Fixed in Master Collection)
    • Smoke and particle effects running at double speed
    • The Fury does things like attacking the wrong way and using his abilities during hitstun. Also at higher framerates a much larger amount of fire can persist on the ground which can be be especially seen on xbox series x/s since the game runs at a stable 60fps (Tied to framerate)
    • The Snake Eater song in the beginning is out of sync due to the removal of the ambient noise that normally plays when "Konami Entertertainment Presents" is onscreen (Fixed in Master Collection)
    • The Pain's bullet bee will not hit Snake in first person view, because of the game running at 60fps (Tied to framerate)

Talking about the faults of the collection is one thing, but could people please stop arguing with one another, accusing people of being "gaming centrists" (?????), and just generally get along a little bit better? Please? This bickering has been going on for several pages and it's getting extremely tiring to sift through.

Again, if you want to voice your opinion about the collection, that's fine. Of course it is. But arguing with or complaining about each other for caring too much about the quality, not caring enough about the quality, etc. isn't doing anyone any good, and it seems to just loop back around to the same points that people started with, which causes it to continue ad infinitum. It's frustrating to see this. Come on y'all.

      • MGSAltTabPatch - allows you to Alt+Tab without the game minimizing itself

v1.40 update released on Steam (audio settings, MGS1 audio fixes, MGS2&3 visual fixes, MGS1/MG1NES/SR screen options)
  • Jun 7, 2023

1.4.0 just dropped for Steam! https://www.konami.com/mg/mc/news/us/en/update_140

Added screen options for MGS1 plus lots of other fixes. I'm personally loving how MGS1 is looking now with proper pixel scaling and scanlines. Coming to other platforms in Jan.

Still hoping for better screen options for MGS2&3. Also, the sound is still screwed up on my Deck.

Was it always B to confirm on the Bonus Content? Feel like the buttons have swapped when they probably weren't supposed to.
