Michel Platini, the former president of Uefa and head of European football, has been arrested over the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

The former France international captain was detained by French police on Tuesday morning in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris, as part of the investigation into corruption surrounding how the 2022 World Cup hosting rights were awarded, according to French investigative outlet Mediapart.

investigators leading the fight against corruption within football have arrested him on suspicion of corruption as part of the case looking into how Qatar won the right to host the next World Cup.

Platini was taken into the Anti-Corruption Office of the Juducial Police (OCLCIFF) on Tuesday morning for questioning.

Qatar was controversially awarded the right to host the 2022 World Cup in 2010, which was announced at the same time as Russia winning the right to stage the 2018 tournament. In 2014, Platini admitted holding a meeting in secret with disgraced former football official Mohamaed Bin Hammam days before casting his vote for Qatar, with the ex-Asian Football Confederation subsequently banned from football for life following an expose by the Sunday Times.

The report also claims that Claude Gueant, who formerly advised ex-French president Nicolas Sarkozy as Secretary General, has also been taken in for questioning but has not been arrested.

Qatar seems such a natural choice tho, shocked to hear it might not have been a totally objective decision.
Well, I'm sure he is innocent anyway, no way Fifa could be corrupt

They need to call off this World Cup then. Have it organized on a shorter notice throughout Europe like the upcoming Euros.

Is there anything that prevent sensible people to group up and create another global football organization? Do national/regional football associations need to pledge allegiance to FIFA or else?

still 3 years to go, plenty of time to cancel and just give it to the uk, france, germany or whoever already has the infrastructure to support this event.

Every World Cup has some fudging going on behind the scenes. Even Germany needed to grease hands to hold the event.

With Qatar they crossed a line though. Because it's also a terrible place to hold the event and it fucks with the league calendar. Which pisses off plenty of people with influence within the organisation.

And that's before we get into the terrible labour conditions and human cost to build stadiums that will never be used again.

What a circus. I remember calling my dad on the day they announced it, us both talking about how mad the whole of it sounded.

As a fellow Frenchman what can I say but "what a disgrace"?

Can somebody explain this to me? I'm so confused.

- Countries put bids together to host the World Cup
- Usually it goes to countries with the relevant infrastructure etc already in place
- Russia and Qatar were awarded consecutive tournaments (2018 and 2022)
- Russia and Qatar bids came under scrutiny, as it was obvious the bids were laced with bribes
- People have been arrested for it already
- Michel Platini is the former head of UEFA, who had considerable sway in the votes

Basically, the Qatar bit was corrupt AF and the chickens are coming home to roost now

The World Cup 2022 is supposed to take place in Qatar
From the moment that was announced everybody knew it was because they offered the highest bribe
Now Platini has been arrested for this

Also nothing will come from this

Thanks.

But since when does corruption ever get punished anyway?

Looks like it was on corruption concerns and not, about, y'know, Qatar literally working people to death over it.

Sigh.
