Minecraft Dungeons Review — A Strong and Simple Beat

Minecraft Dungeons is a great interpretation of the dungeon crawler genre but its simplicity hinders it from becoming something greater.
Minecraft Dungeons is a great game for all ages. While its simplicity hinders it from truly being an excellent dungeon crawler, it is one that you can enjoy with just about anyone. Its intuitive gameplay, replayability, and familiar environments and enemies make it a great starting point for anyone wanting to get into this beloved genre.

Minecraft Dungeons Is Great Fun for Solo Players... Until the Final Level

Over the past couple of days, I've been working through Microsoft and Mojang Studios' dungeon crawler Minecraft Dungeons for review. Due to the short
In many ways, Minecraft Dungeons succeeds in what it sets out to achieve: it's an enjoyable and accessible co-op hack-and-slash dungeon crawler set within the Minecraft world that anybody can jump into.

But beyond that, the package as a whole feels underbaked. The short story length, the limited gear on offer, the uneven difficulty curve for solo players, and its lackluster 'Camp' area make the game feel like it was rushed out to plug the gap in Microsoft's 2020 release schedule.

Still, Minecraft Dungeons is undoubtedly entertaining, and despite all my gripes I find myself being pulled back in, drawn to take on ever-more difficult challenges as I grind toward better gear. In particular, I'm eagerly awaiting my friends to join me. It's just a shame there isn't more content for us all to dive into together when the time comes.

I've watched a few YT video reviews and this looks more shallow than I thought it would. I doubt it will keep the attention of my 10 year old for more than a few evenings. He's playing games like Oxygen Not Included, Factorio, Ark and of course the survival mode Minecraft server he plays occasionally with his cousins. I think kids expect a little more depth than this, but maybe it's aimed at 4-5 year olds?

So uh, sure, the main quest stuff is 3 hours, but what is there in the way of Postgame then? Any idea?

Because I mean noone plays these kinds of games for the Main Quest alone.

Might wait for DLC/Updates before biting on this.

Minecraft Dungeons is a surprisingly approachable and rewarding dungeon-crawler - SQUAD

Minecraft Dungeons takes the beloved IP and evolves it into an accessible and rewarding dungeon-crawling experience, while offering a variety of challenges.
Minecraft Dungeons is the game I didn't know I needed in my life. I wasn't eagerly waiting for the next dungeon-crawler to come my way, but now that it has, I believe it has some real stickiness to someone like me. It airs on the side of whimsical, and its lightheartedness can be delightful.

The replayability has left me itching to continue to dive back in to grind for better loot. Reaching those higher difficulties can resonate with players searching for a challenging experience with friends. However, the game is balanced and accessible, so no player should feel excluded in joining in. While the plot may not capture every player's attention, the gameplay and cooperative moments really excel and bring Minecraft out of its shell and into a new genre.

I'm sure I'll enjoy it with the kids, but the phrase "GamePass shovelware" keeps popping into my head over and over the past few months. Dammit, MS, please don't poison the awesome well that is GP.

That's too short for the asked price, I'll wait to connect to Game Pass at some point (I don't have any mandatory subscription seller yet).

Gears Tactics (A 25+ hour tactical game (80+ metacritic score), Ori and the Will of the Wisps (A 12+ hour metroidvania (90 metacritic score) and Bleeding Edge (the only game that didn't review that well from XGS since months).

Is paid DLC usually included with games on game pass? I could see this game getting a ton of DLC though likely a majority of it will not be free.

Most of the times it's not. I think Human Fall Flat is the sole exception. Sometimes you get an ultimate edition with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. But I don't think that's the case here.

The hero edition for Minecraft Dungeons is €30 and includes both DLC's by the way.

Bleeding Edge and Crackdown 3 were notable. Even Ori was kinda pushed too early (needed a patch badly for X1X at launch).

Like I said I will enjoy dungeons for what it is with my kids, but I was really hoping they would have knocked it out of the park given that it is Minecraft and all the cool stuff I read (that whole thing about them creating the maps in Minecraft made me smile).

Sorry but thats abit selective. Crackdown came out 15 months ago. If you go that far back. You can include Gears 5 also, then we got Ori (sure needed a patch but that doesnt make it shovelware at all)
Bleeding Edge, Gears Tactics and now Dungeons and we are getting Wasteland 3 in August. Only really Bleeding Edge reviewed bad. And this is only first party.

Bleeding Edge was going to be another example but I honestly could not remember the name.

Minecraft Dungeons Review - IGN

Minecraft Dungeons is a fun, entry-level dungeon crawler with a lovely aesthetic.
Minecraft Dungeons is a beautiful and fun dungeon crawler with a simple but tried-and-true set of systems in place. It plays it extremely safe, though, without bringing anything mining or crafting spins to the genre to accompany Minecraft's signature look and feel. Still, it's just so damn charming, and so fun, it's hard to fault it for going the safe route. With tons of loot, secret areas to uncover, and progressively more aggressive difficulty levels to unlock, Minecraft Dungeons has a fair amount of replayability beyond its relatively short six to eight-hour story mode. But who plays Minecraft for the story, anyway?

Does this have any endgame at all? Never been into anything Minecraft related before but watched some streams of this and it looks like it may be fun in co-op. Sounds like it doesn't have much depth though from what little I've seen of it, so might be a game to try when it goes on sale.

Endgame for a loot game is basically higher difficulty with better loot.

You unlock additional difficulty levels when you finish the first playthrough. Most people will be around level 23 or so when finishing the game. There are achievements for level 50.

This seems not great. Like bottom of the barrel for the genre
Watched Giant Bomb's video, this seems super lacking, is there any mining or crafting in this game? I find it funny for people to excuse the lack of content when Terraria cost around the same or less and contains ten times the content. I know they are making future updates and DLC, but cmon man.

the game looks great if you dont like it , dont play it
also calling this game "gamepass shovelware" when its set to be available on all platforms is a little sketch
really starting to question the mindeset of ppl on era
ori and gears tactics? shovelware?

Looks like it will be Minecraft Riverbond, which is right up my boy's street.

I can't help wonder how well this will do, though. I thought story mode would sell like crazy because it had the name, but that didn't turn out so well.

But you know how when you open a new bag of chips there's also that instant where you realize half the bag is just air? Minecraft Dungeons has that too. It's a great pre-breakfast or afternoon snack, but less of a meal in itself. The game's due to get story DLC in the future, as well as cross-play and cross-progression between each of its platforms. It's also easy to see how new items could keep being added to the game to give players new and unusual character builds to chase. But for now, it's enough that Minecraft Dungeons is a chill, fun romp through a bunch of pretty video game levels

Minecraft Dungeons Is A Fun But Stripped-Down Dungeon Brawler

I’ve spent a few hours clicking through Minecraft Dungeons’ isometric world and, despite how shallow it feels, I’d be content to click through it for several more. Mojang’s attempt to spin its massively popular crafting game into a small Diablo-like is successful, limited only by the narrow...

Lower scores than expected but it seems like a nice game to play with the kids. Is this Xbox and PC only or will it come to Switch as well?

It's also coming to PS4 and Switch. And calling it shovelware just because it's short? That's a bit harsh.
