I'm watching all these movies for the first time (the only Ghibli movie I've watched is Arriety) despite knowing I would like them I don't know why I never did watch any.

So far I've watched Kiki, Porco, Totoro, and I just finished Earthsea.

They're all very good movies but Kiki is the one I loved the most followed by Earthsea and Totoro. I liked Porco but honestly it bored me a quite amount of time and I didn't like the confrontation and bet at the end...

I understand that many hate Earthsea... I really liked it, the villain was kinda bland but the story was quite interesting to me. All these movies are so... touching and mundane in a good way, the worlds are so real and magical at the same time.

I wanted to leave Castle in the Sky for the end, it's my next movie in the list. Should I watch the other two? They don't look interesting to me.

I hadn't watched Tales From Earthsea since it first came out. I figured I'll give it rewatch to see if it's as as I remembered.

And yes, yes it is. It's still, by far, the worst Ghibli movie I've seen. An incoherent, incompetently-told story starring nonsensical characters with incomprehensible motivations. Has a bizarrely somber, unemotional yet and depressing vibe throughout, as if reflecting the mood of the animators during its development

It also looks really basic and simple, at no point does it impress, technically or aesthetically. All of Ghibli were asleep at the wheel while they were making this. I don't understand why this made it past the script stage. Or how. Plain bad. There are some Ghibli movies that I'm not all that into, but there are still enjoyable. Earthsea has no redeeming qualities at all.

Counterpoint.

I finally watched the 7 movies and here goes my rank:

S tier: Kiki Delivery Service
A tier: Tales from Earthsea, Laputa Castle in the Sky, Totoro
B tier: Porco Rosso
B- tier: Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves.

I enjoyed all of them but the last two had really boring moments. I didn't like the last act in Porco.

I also didn't like the villains aspect of this batch of movies, they are the best when they focus on dialogues, mundane stuff, and adventures.

Just watched Totoro and Kiki, prefered Totoro but loved both of them, Totoro has perfect pacing and might just be one of the best movies ive seen, truly a marvelous and wonderful piece of animation

Watched only yesterday on a whim - we'd seen all the others in the first wave except Earthsea.

- nothing happens
- it's beautiful
- end credits wtf I'm crying

The themes of Only Yesterday hit me so much harder watching it this time. Dealing with Nostalgia and moving on from the past was done in such a compelling way, also the art style worked for me so much more this time around. It's the first surprise of rewatching this batch so far.

Got three left to see in Porco Rosso, Ocean Waves and Tales from Earthsea. Will be interesting to see what my ranking of the7 is afterwards.

and by 'nothing happened' I of course mean super evocative slice of life stuff. did the memory bits have faded out edges? Felt more 'painterly' backgrounds which may have been to emphasise them being memories?

after watching, my daughter looked it up on Wikipedia - apparently they animated the 'modern' bits like a regular movie - record the voices first then animate against them - so you get better sync with the voices etc. But the memories were animated against a script, and then overdubbed. Not clear if this was to emphasise the more ethereal aspects of memories, or perhaps to replicate how they used to do animation in the 60s?

That's very interesting, I feel like the water painted look of the film added to it and well I don't remember if the edges are blurred during the childhood scenes I think the softness of the art style really adds to it feeling dreamlike and gives a sense of memories. Taeko even talks about having a vivid dream.

Either way it's an excellent film that I feel hit me much harder this time around, probably because I'm in my 20s now whereas last time I saw it I was a teenager so the themes I think are more impactful now. Also forgot to mention I also cried during the end credits , I'm pretty sure I had to the do with the song and the two Taeko's saying goodbye to one another.

Saw castle in ghe sky again last night.

God i love this movie. The lovable goofie characters, the overexagerated animation and the plane engineering porn at the same time, the feeling of danger and adventure and discovery...

I always lost it when the first guardian, engulfed in a sea of fire and war, desperate to protect the girl, understand that his only choice is to put her a top of the tower's wall. Its such a beautiful heartbreaking moment

These dudes thirsting after Sheeta is just a tad too much for me.

The third act is top notch though, I wasn't particularly engrossed for most of the film but the ending once they arrive in Laputa itself is just amazing

its a bit much indeed but I love how it gets spin when they all visit her in the kitchen and they all see themself flagged by each others and she end up making them all work/clean/wash I found it hilarious and heartwarming

Best part of castle in the sky is when the old pirate lady talks to Sheeta in her bedroom and you see her portrait and realise she has been a marauding pirate her entire life.

The funny thing is that his being a pig is almost completely irrelevant to the story. The whole thing still works if that element weren't part of it.

It's relevant to the best line in the film though

And just saw Laputa; damn what a fucking beautiful film.

Also when they finally reached Laputa I got serious Zelda: BoTW vibes; they certainly had to have taken inspiration for the shrines etc. from this movie. So cool.

Disney has the rights in North America, IIRC, so probably not.
Looking back through the thread other posters are claiming that HBO/Warner have streaming rights in the US.

Maybe it's only temporary and they'll end up on Disney Plus?

Disney gave up US rights to GKids a few years ago, so Ghibli won't be on Disney+ and only reason it isn't on HBO MAX right now is that the service doesn't exist yet.

Looks like Spirited Away is the only film in the new batch to support 5.1 audio, all are in HD quality as expected.

In the last batch Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service and Tales from Earthsea all had 5.1 audio and all the films had HD video.

Yo, is this the reason why all the soundtracks are finally appearing on Spotify? A lot of Hisaishi stuff was already starting to trickle in over the past month, but the motherload was just dropped.

I can finally listen to both the normal and the symphonic Nausicaa soundtracks on my way to work.

Government website in my country provides us built in vpn to access american network. So i use that to see netflix us, and wow the contents are horrible. Netflix europe and asia are better. We still have disney shows and movies here, and Friends

But the netflix us has good movies like The Pass, and supernatural though

Yo, and if you watch Doubutsu Takarajima (animal treasure Island), one of the first movies Miyazaki was involved with, you'll find Wind Waker took inspiration from it in a few ways.

I can finally listen to both the normal and the symphonic Nausicaa soundtracks on my way to work.

Not the hi-tech series version though :(
Lost my CD years ago

What the hell, it's not on YouTube anymore either :(
