Today is actually Ni no Kuni 2 preview day - the press had about 4 hours of hands on time with Chapter 3 and 4 which includes the overworld, new dungeons, a new boss fight and showcases the revamped battle system (even more revamped then before), the Kingdom Builder Mode, and the Skirmishes. Feast your eyes on all this coverage!

In short: the battle system kicks ass and is much improved over the first game and even more improved from earlier previews. You can control every character and switch between them during combat, like the first game, and the AI of your companions is much improved. Every character now has a melee and ranged attack, every character can have multiple weapons equipped. Every weapon has a "Zing" meter which improves combat abilities based on how full of Zing it has. They showed off the new Tactics Tweaker which allows the player to fully customize their gameplay experience (enhance experience vs gold, do more damage against certain monsters, etc). Playstation Lifestyle also mentioned there are Dark Cloud style randomized optional dungeons in the game. Also, fast travel is unlocked right from the get go, while in Ni no Kuni 1 it took like 20 hours before you got a Teleportation spell.

There's a ton of new information.

Oh, and have a picture of Ni no Kuni 2's Map.

Thanks, Vlaud.

There's a lot more previews popping up on youtube, even from some non-press that were invited to play it. Overall impressions are pretty glowing across the board. It's been a long ride since it was announced at the end of 2015 and it'll be over 5 years since the first game came out. I cannot waaaaaait!

I can't wait.

Are the anime cutscenes back? Do we go to the 'real world' again?

As far as I can tell from all coverage: no. The animated cutscenes from Ghibli aren't back. Ghibli themselves aren't involved in the game like they were in the first game, but several ex-Ghibli employees that worked on the first game are working on the sequel (i.e. the animator and character designer, Joe Hisaishi is back composing the sequel's soundtrack).

I have no idea if going to any other worlds is possible like in the first game.

Be interested to see Kotaku's view on this - Jason is a big JRPG guy and was, IIRC, a big fan of the first but was soured on this one early on.

I can't watch all the videos at work but curious if any of them mentioned anything about performance/framerate or a pro patch?

Still not sure if I'll get this on my Pro or PC, would like to hear how it runs.

I wasn't too hot on the gameplay when I tried it last year but it sounds like they've been taking everyone's comments to heart with the changes!

Game looks amazing so far. But i'm holding off judgement on the base building / kingdom battle stuff. While that might be very cool, i'm looking to this game to simply be an amazing JRPG first and foremost.

I had never been able to play any JRPG for more than a few hours. NNK was the first and only JRPG I've ever completed. Studio Ghibli's involvement was the main reason as I'm a huge fan of the studio. Looking forward to this but not that hyped as Ghibli is not involved. Hopefully the story will be as good as the first one.

Good to hear the improvements about the battle system.
The first game, while charming anb beautiful, had one of the worst gameplays for any JRPG, bad combat, bad IA, repetitive sidequests, mediocre use of magic outside of combats, boring monster capture...
Some previews say that the tactical top-view battles are pretty simple, but they are opcional.
If the combat is as good as the previews say, and the game is half as charming as the first one, then it will be another great JRPG to continue this incredible streak (Persona 5, Xenoblade 2, TitS the Third, Berseria...)

The battle system looks a whole lot better and reminds me of Dark Cloud 2 wherein it was action based with an element of strategy.

I am really thinking they took criticism to heart here but Im still curious about pacing and handholding as I felt there was too much of that in the beginning on NNK1

The combat system in the first just seemed convoluted and failed to be enjoyable. Hope these changes will make the combat fun as everything else about this series is awesome.

I didn't really enjoy the first game when I went through it (despite spending WAY too much on the Wizard edition) but the second one coming out might be a good excuse to try it out again. I think I'd really love it now (like so many other things in life, it all comes down to timing).

This is probably my most anticipated game of the year. Absolutely adored the first game on PS3 and can't wait to get lost in this gorgeous world all over again.

YES.

THIS WAS ONE OF MY BIGGEST PROBLEMS WITH THE FIRST GAME.

God damn, I am so happy. This game looks like it's improving on NnK1 in every possible way. I cannot possibly be more excited! Hearing they improved the battle system even more than the last few previews is making my jaw drop since I got to play a demo at Fan Expo and I already thought it was fantastic.

Do I have to play the first game to play this one?

You can if you want to, but luckily this game is shaping up to be completely safe standalone. So far it seems there's a few links to NNK1 with the lore, but overall the cast and storyline are brand new and the world is very different too.

Wow didn't know there was a jump button. Jumping in these kind of games is actually really sweet to have.

Apparently there are still some ex studio Ghibli devs working on this title.

Game looks incredible. I can not wait to get lost in this world. Super bummed I never finished the last one. Wish we would get a release on current gen.

Ni no Kuni 2 runs at 60 fps on the base PS4, PS4 Pro, and at least the PC.

http://gearnuke.com/ni-no-kuni-2-60-fps-ps4/

Some of the previews were running on a base PS4, and hitting the ol' 1080p/60fps option on the ones that have it does indeed show the game running at 60 fps.

Would be cool if this had HDR. I've seen some anime movies on Netflix that have it.

In addition to answering the above two questions: yes, there is Pro support, and yes Ni no Kuni 2 has HDR!

Well that's all great news. I guess it's hard to go wrong with either version.

Nah I'm good, I already have it preordered. HDR support will be amazing, hopefully it's implemented well unlike MHW. I hope they port the first to PS4

Here is a gameplay footage from Game Informer

So, what I don't like:
- Chibi overworld
- level and name of the monsters shown in overworld
- instant item usage

What I like:
- Kingdom building seems to have more depth than I thought it would have
- Multiple weapons
- seamless battle transition in dungeon

Seems like party members not in battle also get some experience. That's good.
