If Hyrule warriors is that high this month, I would take bets Octopath will be top 3 on the NPD charts! Mario kart 8 will be top 3 this holiday as well.

Blimey.

Seeing State of Decay 2 on top of the software charts is a genuine surprise to me!

It's somewhat strange seeing the likes of Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 do really well in their opening months in the US however, neither of them set the charts alight anywhere else in the world except from the first couple of weeks in the weekly PAL charts threads.

If they sell so well, especially in the US, why don't Microsoft just be open about their sale figures as opposed to the comparatively meaningless 'players played' numbers?

Anyhoo, God of War being the #2 best selling game in the US this year, and on a single format to boot, is fantastic to see, and Detroit: Become Human has had a great debut.

The trio of Donkey Kong, Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart in the top ten is a very pleasing sight, and the Switch selling more or less the same as last years hardware numbers is very good too.

Xbox One hardware is up 39%, but up from a shy over 100K units with a $50 price cut across all Xbox One S bundles isn't that great IMO. Only needs to sell 160K or more next month to have their best H1 since the Xbox One launched back in 2013.

As for the PlayStation 4, it has been available from $299 all year up until the beginning of June, and they have come out on top of the hardware ranking for the fourth month in a row. It has really deserved all of those sales, and I hope they pass the 80 million milestone very soon!

Resident Evil 2 will do insane numbers. Plus there's also KH III in January.

Sea of Thieves was #2, but yes, both games debut sales were good.

Game Pass is great and surely helping increase exposure, and plus, pirates and zombies are two things that never really go out of style, especially multiplayer capable ones. There was also quite a long drought of exclusives for the platform. But with both of these titles reviewing below average, it shows how little the review scores matter for the marketability of certain types of games.

So switch is out selling both PS4 and pro individually, but together they overtake switch? Is that how that is read?

It's not meaningless when you sell a subscription service that allows people to play the game. It's only gaming forums where unit sales are still counted like points. Even console sales, while important I think investors care more about PS+/XBL numbers. They also like player numbers and digital sales as that means you're more likely to have a customer's credit card on file, etc.

Zombies are still popular. But i think SoD2 isnt just zombies. Its mechanics are cool and pretty unique in such a world.
I hope we see SoD in a other world with 3.

With a name like Undead Labs, you would safely assume that you're probably going to make more zombies games in the future. Do you see yourself branching out at all in terms of either genre or theme, going beyond zombies? Is it just kind of the identity of the studio?

When we formed the studio we had State of Decay on mind. I would say that our gig is survival fantasy. That's what makes State of Decay unique. It's not zombies; it's survival fantasy. I think that future projects would probably play into that theme. But no, it's not necessarily always gonna be zombies.

Heavy Rain had debut of 220K so 20% more means about 264K for Detroit.

Edit. Forgot somehow that this is revenue based nowadays. So my math doesn't work.
Do you have a source for that HR number? and since most copies sold are the standard versions which cost 60$ for both games I don't think the number should be way off?

Holy crap, what a hold for God of War. Nice to see Detroit up there, too, as well as the apparent success of Game Pass.

But this would mean quite a huge number of gamepass subscriptions which on the other hand would mean that people can get the game for free which means less physical sales... And to imagine that it was able to do it for $30 is even more confusing to me.

I imagine it works similar to Amazon's Kindle Unlimited. I work with a writer whose book is enrolled in Amazon's subscription program (i.e. readers can read the book for free if they pay Amazon subscription), and she says it actually helps the book's sales, because more eyes on the book=more recommendations to friends. Not to mention that some readers treat the program like a test run: they read for free and then buy the book anyway if they like it, because they want to own the book.

I imagine it works the same way with GA, and that's why SoD2's sales didn't suffer because of GA.

Did not expect to see SoD at the top. Hopefully MS sees the potential of SoD and gives Undead Labs what they need to grow the team and make an even better sequel.

Hopefully they give all their developers free reign. Just reading the sony/crossplay thread answers and most people responded "no I like Sony exclusives" so it's good to have a wide library of genres, including niche ones, because they sell consoles and give you WW appeal.

I haven't played a Japanese RPG in a long time but there are people that have a PS4 for that reason.

Indeed. Detroit isn't actually doing as well as people here think. It is funny tbh, I saw some people in the Detroit thread saying how great the game was selling but then putting down SoT or SoD2 which are actually doing better.

As an aside, I'm also not expecting Sony to work with them on a 4th game.
Shouldn't Sony be earning somewhere around 50$ per copy? They sold 1 million copies in 2 weeks so even if the cost of developing + marketing the game was around 60 million this means they should be close if already in the black right now. Or am I missing something?

Not necessarily. Sony has more than 1 sku per console. But considering the difference in unit sold (55k) I'd say it's likely.
You get a lot less per copy sold at retail
I was talking in average. You get almost all of the digital revenue and around 45$ for the physical (based on Ubisoft numbers). 50$ on average isn't a bad estimate since most copies sold are physical (even if it was lower it should be something like 48$ which shouldn't change the general idea). The only thing I can think of is if QD has a high royalty on every copy sold instead of just Sony paying them to develop the game.

That jank State of Decay 2??

Impressive result. It's a fun game though I'd never bet on it topping charts.

GTA is unstoppable. PS4 marches on.

So Dark Souls didn't rank? Do we know how well it did?

I don't need Sony looking at Dark Souls Remastered sales and thinking it's not worth remastering Demon's Souls.

I'm honestly shocked that Dark Souls failed to place in the overall Top 20 or the Top 10 for any platforms.

PS4 is a beast still and GOW has extremely strong legs. Congrats to Sony Santa Monica. I can easily see this title surpassing 10 million LTD sales.
