'GTA V' returns to the top for an incredible 14th No.1

Having commented last week on the rise of Rockstar/Take 2's perennial favourite 'GTA V' which climbed back in to the Top 3, the title now benefits from promotional activity and grabs No1 for the first time since June 2017 (week 25).

This means that 'GTA V' now has 14 weeks at No1 on the Overall All Formats (Units) and is now third in the list of all-time No1's, moving ahead of 505 Games' 'Zumba Fitness' (13 weeks at No1) . 'GTA V' is now just 2 weeks behind Nintendo's 'Wii Fit' which racked up 16 weeks at No1, but still 4 weeks away from all-time All Formats No1 chart topper, Eidos/Square-Enix's 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' (18 weeks). Over the 226 weeks on chart 'GTA V' has spent over half within the Top 5 (123 times) and has never been out of the Top 40.

Activision Blizzard's 'Call of Duty: WWII' hovers at No2 and EA's 'FIFA 18' drops from No1 to No3. Sales units on these top 3 titles are close, so we will have to wait and see who claims another No1 next week. Ubisoft remain at No4 for a fourth consecutive week with 'Assassin's Creed Origins' and Nintendo climb 7 places to No5 with 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe' – this game is currently the top-selling Switch title in the UK, has 38 weeks on chart and has so far not been out of the Top 40.

There are no big sales or promotions as far as I can see pertaining to that specific game. It's still £40 at least pretty much everywhere. If I were to hypothesise, it is seemingly the game that later adopters getting the console for Christmas are going back to buy after getting the god-tier trio.

Could be. It's had a big pull on women and children from Japanese reports, so it's possible that the christmas crowd is buying this game as their multiplayer game after getting a cream-of-the-crop title like MK8D or SMO or BOTW.

LA Noire sure, it is not the best selling SKU but it is selling.

Rocket League definitely not, there is no physical version released yet and this data is physical only. It's still charting very high digitally on the eShop in the UK FWIW.

There are stock issues with Super Mario Odyssey in France and in the UK that explains its relative ranking (3rd Switch game). However, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is clearly the game that will have the strongest legs at the end of the day.

Would it be easy to alter your script to get every 20th record? Then you could quickly pull a decent picture of the whole 4M and gradually fill in the gaps after that if you need to.

Also a bunch of smaller news items like new weapons launching everyweek. Every Switch owner looking in his news feed gets a lot more Splatoon 2 related news compared to other games because of the constant updates. There is also websites and social media covering the updates which raises awareness. With Arowana Mall launching probably by the end of the month it's not like there is any reason for the game not to continue getting a lot of new owners.

Right, but what I asking was why it dropped into the top 21 so suddenly after having been missing for a long time. I guess the most probably explanation is that it has always been selling like this, and the current sales of games around it are the lowest they've been since Splatoon 2 launched.

That's definitely a factor, other games are having their post-holiday slump while Switch evergreen games are still selling to new owners.

Would it be easy to alter your script to get every 20th record? Then you could quickly pull a decent picture of the whole 4M and gradually fill in the gaps after that if you need to.

Yeah at this point you might as well get all of it as long as it's easy to manage that much.
