First time player, will I be lost story-wise?
I hope it's newbie friendly .
I think I'm going to jump in.

Enjoying the game so far, but the complete lack of rumble is unfortunate. Playing so much PS5, I've gotten used to the tactile feedback. I know the Series X/S's rumble is way less sophisticated, but I would have thought we'd have something there at least.
There's no vibration? Strange. I didn't even notice.

God this is immediately so nice to look at and control. Such a happy story to get such a well-received (and well-funded) sequel all these years later.

The unzipping teeth are making my skin crawl.

Lovely game and story so far. Such a step up in quality from the first one on all fronts.

Haven't played much but really liking it so far. Playing on PC Game Pass but I'm really tempted to just pick it up on Steam so that I can play on the Deck right out of the box later down the line too.

I am dying here with laughter. The entire conversation between Raz and Sam Boole while she's making pancakes with the animals in the background reacting is freakin' hilarious.

I've only played the opening level and explored the hub so far but I can tell I'm really going to enjoy this.

I'd recommend following the tips here if you wanna be able to equip four abilities and not have to have levitation taking up one of those spots for the entire game and dealing with constant switch outs.

I was hoping to have completed the first game before this one, but it didn't really stick with me past the first hour and a half. Should I still hop into this right away or make my way through the original first?

First game arguably improves dramatically after the somewhat bland tutorial-esque first level(war battlefield). Though you will get a lot more context out of playing it(and Rhombus) first, especially since they all literally take place back-to-back, it's not like you can't just jump into 2 straight away either.

May appreciate the world and characters more and have a greater curiosity and appreciation going back to 1 afterwards if the sequel truly clicks. No harm playing them backwards really.

Ah, ok, in that case it would be great if you could attach a crash dump to the email - you can find them at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Psychonauts2\Saved\Crashes
Thanks!
Hey so I sent the email but I have news! So not happy with just giving up and going to bed I decided to crawl the internet and see if anyone else had this issue with any other games and sure enough there's like a kajillion of em, so I tried all kinds of shit and was about to give when all the way buried in a single reddit post someone had the same issue and the only response was this one guy that was like "Oh yeah just kill sonic studio 3, unreal engine games hates that shit" and I was like waitaminute.....I got that crap on here AND SURE ENOUGH I uninstall that and BAM I'm in!

Played all the way up till I set foot in the motherlobe and the games fantastic, so it's so far so good! Thanks random ass reddit guy.

I usually try and see the best in games no matter what, and I love Double Fine, but this game is starting to suck. Every time it gets going I'm hit with another cutscene. It's not that funny and it keeps shoving these scenes at you 😒

Having to constantly change the control scheme seems so strange; I changed the float to jump button, but you have to press it 3 times instead of just holding after double jump like every other game in existence.

The combat is atrocious and the enemies have health bars and are super sponges? I just can't wrap my head around these decisions.

Oh well, I'm glad everyone else likes it. Just not hitting the notes for me. Which is an ultra bummer cause I like everything else about the game. 😭

Finished the intro area, liking it so far. Took my time talking to everybody and looking at environmental details. Some are pretty fun.

There's an option to massively increase damage dealt to enemies, have you tried that?

Did you try turning narrative combat on?

Been working perfect for me outside occasional stutter for a second in newly loaded areas.
Yeah, I've just done the first area and no major concerns.

This is brilliant 😊 won me over completely already. I love how they explain levitation, "your thoughts can lift you up if you focus" that's great. The whole thing just oozes charm.

i just got to "the questionable area" and i can't believe how big this game is — it's been a while since i've played a 3D platformer that's structured like this. i'm super impressed.

dude seriously it keeps expanding and I did not expect this at all so it's been a really amazing surprise to play. it's just a blast.

game looks straight gorgeous (amazing art direction), structured in an interesting way, has fantastic music, and oh my god, it might be one of the funniest games I've played in a long time. the writing, voice acting, and actual animation-acting and especially camera edits have all been so entertaining and well done, I am so sucked in i will go through every characters dialogue tree because it's just been that fun each time. they absolutely nailed it. Feels like a game like this has been overdue for a while. Mad props to DoubleFine!

Just finished the first level and wow, the level of polish is just outstanding. Doesn't feel like the usual Double Fine jank haha.

I just finished Psychonauts the day before yesterday, so coming into this has been something for sure. It all feels so fresh and smooth and shiny now!
Yeah, you can feel that first party polish. Unlike any DF game I've played.

does keyboard presses become unresponsive in the "M" menu for anyone else? I have to keep tabbing out to switch pages or interact with the UI.

Yeah, performance is not great on my pc (especially after excellent Gears 5 optimization), also stutterfest..
Which setting is most demanding?

Oh no, does this game has the same Quick Resumes problems that Hades has? Which means when you use Quick Resume on it, no achievements drop. Cause I haven't gotten any achievements besides 1 and I'm past the first boss now.

This starts to worry me.

Edit:

Yes it has this problem, even worse, they just don't drop after a restart, I only got one achievement popping up after a restart but the rest like reaching rank 10, upgrading, no achievement.
Now imagine I maxed out in something via Quick Resume, that achievement would be dead.

OscarK Can you forward this issue? This seems to be a big problem with Quick Resume in general.

Se my post here to switch to DX11 if you are on steam or GOG. Maxwell/Pascal based cards generally do better with DX11 then DX12, i saw a 30 fps boost and it fixed the stuttering completely. If you are on gamepass you are unfortunately sol atm.

GrrImAFridge Can you make a Threadmark about people stop using Quick Resume currently cause it breaks the achievements? (Same Problem as with Hades, see my post above)

I bet there are enough 100% achievement hunter here who might want to avoid that.

I hope there wasn't an achievement for beating the casino boss (the first boss) cause then this could be lost already for me, since it didn't pop up after restart.

Wait so I'm screwed with this stuttering problem if I'm playing on GP?

Screw it, bought on Steam. Game deserves it anyway.

As soon as I've seen "Unreal Engine" I though: "this is going to be a stutter fest, doesn't it?"

And with the intro mission it mostly was (PC GamePass), as always it seems to be a cache building issue, so breaking stuff, killing enemies etc for the first time cause those freezes just like some emulators do.

This is quite annoying, as always... is it possible to share this cache between computers or it's tied to personal computer and/or drivers?

Saying that, other things I don't like:

- forcing non hearing subtitles. Just as for TLoU2 you can't disable that but you have to get those "screaming" and such captions that aren't the best. In a game like this you can deal with it but in TLoU2 it was a terrible decision that ruined various key moments. Accessibility options are great but you should never force them to the user (Valve got it right with Portal 2 for example by let you chose the type of subtitles).

- auto aim for RB and RT powers, you just press those buttons and he automatically shot at flying enemies and throw stuff directly on them. I would really like to actually aim to perform those actions to make the game more interesting to play.

- environment texture aren't the best even at ultra, but nothing too severe.

Other then this the first hour of the game was very faithful to Psychonauts and what was expecting from the game, so nothing negative about the game or the narrative, for now they seem to have made a great job <3

The fact that you can't put your controller down goes to show the insane amount of care and thought put in the design of every aspect of this game.

My praise may start to get tiring, but I have been waiting this day for a long time and the game is delivering high time.

The game is set to DX12 mode by default which always has shader generation stuttering in UE4. This can be changed with the command line -dx11 which will start the game in DX11 mode.

Note the Game pass version can't be changed to DX11 and will always run in DX12 mode this was the same in other UE4 game pass titles like the Ascent dunno why.
Ah ok, so I was right about that generating shaders was tied to stuttering, the many hours wasted on Cemu has thought me that at least.

So that can be solved on DX11 but of course Microsoft force DX12 on GP... eh... I don't know if there is any chance of having this changed by an update honestly.

What about sharing cache as I've asked in the other post? Is it possible or it's tied to hardware/drivers?

Spoilers for the first mission.

Can the first mission (Doctor Lobato's mind) be completed 100% the first time playing it? I have some missing bits and luggages that I could not get to.

Not as far as I know. There are a few required powers that you get after the point you would use them.

Oof the controls are so nice. I love how tight the platforming is, especially on the levitation ball. It just feels right. Just finished first 3 worlds and am exploring the overworld map for all the goodies. This is just like I remember, what a wonderful feeling.

This is on track to be my GotY, it's just so charming and creative. If there are any small gripes, I'd say I wish there weren't quite that many cutscenes and were longer gaming sessions between interruptions, even if they're very well done and almost feel like something out of a Lucasarts adventure. Sometimes it feels like I'm playing for seconds before they take away control again.

And I hope they can fix the small stutter skips that happen occasionally on PC.

I'm surprised how many cutscenes there are, hopefully if becomes fewer once you progress. It feels like constant interruptions in the first hour or so.
