https://variety.com/2019/film/reviews/shazam-review-zachary-levi-1203166877/"Shazam!," on the other hand, is just a light, funny, grounded, engagingly unpretentious sleight-of-hand action comedy about a boy in a (super)man's body. The movie, in other words, is "Big" in tights. And it's Zachary Levi who makes that work, in much the same way that Tom Hanks did. Levi doesn't play Billy as a callow kid; quite the contrary, he's intelligent and jackknife fast.
https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2019/03/23/shazam-review-not-a-boy-not-yet-a-superheroUltimately, Shazam! is probably a little too mature for actual children and too childish for adults, but it's serviceable enough to warrant a sequel that explores the good, clear ideas introduced in this one. Let's hope people who are the right age, or at least mindset, make that one.
https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/03/23/shazam-reviewShazam! is a DC's most joyful and sweet movie since the days of Christopher Reeve's Superman, a funny yet earnest coming-of-age story about a boy who learns that, well, with great power comes great responsibility. So obviously, Shazam! doesn't reinvent the superhero movie, but it's an undeniably fun time that left me wanting more big-screen adventures with these charming characters.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/shazam-review-1196387Shazam! will best be appreciated by younger (and younger at heart) audiences who should respond very enthusiastically not only to the broad comedy but also emotional components involving Billy's desperate desire to be reunited with his mother and his growing attachment to his newfound family. His relationship with Freddy, which starts out frostily but eventually becomes deep friendship, also proves moving, not to mention providing the opportunity for a delicious cameo appearance by a certain familiar character in the DC universe near the film's end.
