Switch is the only platform I'm still buying physical games for since the cartridges are small and easy to carry with me anywhere. The boxes themselves don't take so much space as well.

So. Small update.

This might be the most dumb or the most intelligent decision of my gaming life. I have been purchasing empty cases (with artwork); I can display the boxes in my shelf, but with the convenience of digital games!

I only have 16 cases for now, but I still need to get dozens more.

I was ready to forgive you OP, but empty cases? Hell no

Yeah... I dig your pluck OP but holy moly this is strange behavior. It's like a flex in the middle of a empty field to like no one. Like do you actually have friends who do a check-sum of their friends' collections or carefully examine the boxes on their shelves beyond maybe seeing a game they want to play which is ya know the point of video games... to play games..

If you were repurchasing Collector's Edition Switch games with real physical additive stuff I would get it but buying standard empty cases. It is just wacky to me.

you lost me at the empty case op, switch cases are butt ugly on the shelf with the monotonous red

Edit: speaking of empty cases I have an empty AI: the somnium file day one ed with stickers if you want to take it off my hand lol (lost the game due to being a dummy and returning it with one of my gamefly game T_T )

I'm all digital in PlayStation since the PS4, but I'd never go digital with Nintendo. The state of their digital ecosystem is not as robust as Sony much less Xbox.

Nintendo would have to improve massively for me to consider go digital with their games.

Who wants all that clutter? In the end, that's what it ends up mostly being, IMO, needless clutter. Who exactly is being impressed by displays of empty game cases?

The box arts pictured aren't good enough to collect just the empty boxes, except maybe the Doom one.

If that makes you happy, then go for it :)

Not many people get my decision to collect Japanese games when I don't speak Japanese, but I really wanted all these games from my childhood which are now super expensive. However, the Japanese versions are much much cheaper, often have better looking covers, are in amazing condition, and in a lot of cases (outside of the jrpgs mainly) are totally playable without being able to read the text properly. If I had been buying english games only with my money, my collection would be about half the size it is currently. Check this:

Admittedly all my Japanese stuff is older (Gamecube is the most recent console I own any Japanese stuff for, everything else is english)
but I own every N64 game I care about (around 20 of them ) complete in box and in great condition. Which is something that would cost almost more than my whole collection combined in english!

If it makes you happy, who cares what others think :)

This sounds like addiction to be frank
Nintendo struggles with everything related to online functionalities and I don't trust them. Hell, they love making costumers buy again classics

Switch is the one platform left that still makes sense to buy physical, with the way games work nowadays.

In the end, it's taking up living space. Digital has some drawback's. Digital is definitely the way to go.

And here I am using my money to buy food and pay rent. Maybe I should start buying empty DVD cases for all the shows I watch on Netflix.

I get it OP. I started out wanting all of my Switch games digital but now years later with Sony's nonsense I've switched to mostly pro-physical across the board and even rebought a few (cheaper) physical Switch games, though not very many since I already own them in one form.

It's tough as a niche game fan because games go out of print so quick (lookin at you Alliance Alive Switch : P). So I see where you're coming from.

Buying physical again really makes me miss physical manuals though 😂 the insides of cases are so empty nowadays, though it's obviously better for the environment

I regret buying as many as I did physical. I started all physical, now I've been picking up anything I want on sale digital and selling my boxes. I love physical games when the game is all there and good to go on the media. That's just not the case anymore for like 80-90% of games be it Switch, Playstation or Xbox.

I've been all digital since last-gen and I have no regrets. In fact, with like the Xbox stuff, I actually regret buying stuff physically. Games get lost, stolen or scratched. My brother can't find his copy of Breath of the Wild (it's probably in his messy room) but I don't have that problem because it's tied to my account. All games are just "there".

That said, if you want to still have physical stuff for the games you play, I'd buy figures or clothes. Not all games need to be represented, but your gaming shrine or whatever could have a statue of God of War, Zelda and Halo.

Also, I think the main issue is that the digital media is so industrial and boring. Click game and start playing. I think you skip something if you don't have the description and artwork of the game before you launch it. For me, Wii hackers fixed this problem years ago with Wii Flow, which was a USB loader that had 3D cases and full artwork. You could see the cases back and forth and even open them to see the CD. If you could have a cool interactive way of managing your digital collection, I'm sure many will actually see an appeal.

I feel you OP. My big rule of thumb these days is just to not sell any games for this exact reason. I like having the physical display, even though my Switch collection is 95% digital.

I remember back in 2011 I sold my Wii games to help afford me a PS3, and I've regretted that ever since. I spent idk how long re-buying and re-collecting games. Thankfully I was able to find some games early on like Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom and Fragile Dreams before they shot up in price.

Even if they're in a box somewhere (which they are now as I'm in between houses) I like to have them.
If that makes you happy, then go for it :)

God I love the look of individual shelves for different franchises. If I wasn't so particular about my amiibo collection being ordered (especially the Smash Bros. ones) I'd do something like this. Don't want to buy doubles or admittedly triples of certain figures and cases haha.

What ever floats your boat. Sounds like you enjoy collecting, and there's nothing wrong with that, so it should just be a lesson learned to buy physical going forward.

Myself, I couldn't care less about collecting games or other physical media anymore. Realized, games, movies, CDs etc. were a waste of money and space as we were seldom using any of it and just consuming new things for the first time. Now I only buy games physical if I want to sell after beating to keep costs down. Don't by movies or music at all anymore, streaming is better for our disposable consumption.

What I don't get is people in this forum don't getting it lol... There is a monthly thread in this forum where people show how they spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on "useless" stuff.

When people collect and display games in their cases I bet a part of their 'happiness' comes from seeing the wall space being filled with the little plastic boxes. Nobody is going to open the boxes to see if there is a game inside. If OP is not filling the shelves with cases for games he doesn't own, I don't really understand how this sounds so bizarre for the people of this forum TBH... and even if he was, I've seen worse in here lol.

And for the worries about his financials, not sure how much is OP paying for the boxes, but they probably retain the value if he decides to resell them back again for the fifth or seventh time at this pace

yeah I also have the full smash bros set, but decided after my wife rearranged all the zelda games with their amiibo that I would break my sets up to put them with their games and I haven't looked back :D I was tempted for a time to buy doubles so I could have all the smash bros ones at least all together, but honestly I think I would rather buy more games with that money than spend it on amiibo I already have. Especially because pretty much every game left on my list is selling above retail and shows no signs of getting any cheaper :\

OP probably has more empty cases than me having Switch physical copies + digital library combined.

I actually think those Switch cases look pretty good in that red color. Not as good as buying empty ones, but still

I went all digital on Wii U. It was nice not having to get up to change discs, but now all my games and virtual console purchases are stuck on the worst console I've ever owned. I definitely would have traded in most of my Wii U games and put them towards the Switch variants. I'll never go digital with Nintendo again.

I wouldn't trust Nintendo with my digital library ever after they screwed up Wii and Wii U so far. I went all digital with Xbox but stayed physical with Switch

mate if you really are a collector why dont you just buy a bunch of blank cases and print the art on them? Buying boxes is just too much

I would go all digital all the time at this point if it wasn't for the fact that digital pricing in my region is effed beyond belief.

I even stupidly bought a digital only PS5 because it was all I could get.
I'm hoping as we get further into the generation sony will have more sales on ps5 games, because right now there hasn't been much.
