Marx was like best buds with Abraham Lincoln though!

Certainly celebrating a friend of Lincoln wouldn't engender a rebuke.

Unlike Karl Marx's birthday thread, nobody can close off the yearly renewal and growth of the coming storm.

Hmmmmm.

Then this new rule should have been made public, after the Pelosi thread.

So now are we just not going to have any threads, made about historical figures, that in anyway controversial. ?

I am not comfortable with that, at all.

lmao, this story is wild:

A nug you may have missed from the
@MS_DHS
audit released today: Mississippi paid $1.1 million in welfare money to quarterback Brett Favre to appear at events. And then he didn't go.

I mean, this is some messed up shit. That audit is crazy. A bunch of entitled rich celebrities and other bougies have been stealing millions and millions of dollars from welfare intended for the vulnerable. This in a state as fucked up as Mississippi is.

Hello, socialist ERA!

This will be my fourth post here. I'm a libertarian-socialist ideologically, but a social-democrat in practice. Those would be my positions.

Now, for the question... I recall an anarchist saying "we are more liberal than liberals, and more socialist than socialists". I recall that being said by Bakunin, but I've searched that on Google and I can't come with a result.

Can anyone give me a hand?

This does sound incredibly familiar but I can't find anything on it either. And it doesn't seem to be one of those fake quotes misattributed to anyone. Very interesting!

Rushersauce You won't find the quote because it's a rephrasing of Nicolas Walter - the correct quote is "we are liberals but more so and we are socialists but more so", in About Anarchism

edit. You can find it here, from the original text: http://www.ditext.com/walter/about.html

I've been thinking about how incredibly important something like this is, possibly even more so than theory. And in ways that goes way beyond left twitter debates.

I think most people already have generally decent intuition about what's good or bad morally, but either offload all thinking about real world application to authorities, or come to a wrong conclusion way too quickly on surface level info. We need much less trust in all authorities, be it corporate, government, grifters or even academic, not to discount everything they say but to have faith in ourselves to criticize it.

And I think the only way to do this is to be ok with being wrong, even expecting to sometimes be wrong. Sometimes it can be really hard to know what you don't know unless you speak up to be corrected. And as long as you're ok with being wrong, being corrected should be a great thing. Neoliberalism teaches you that going against the grain itself makes you wrong, and makes you worried your livelyhood will be hurt if you're wrong, and that needs to die.

I suppose leftists have probably already taken that plunge to some extent, but need reminders to periodically challenge themselves to dig deeper, especially on Twitter which trains you to rest on headlines and hottakes.

Basically "trust no one, not even yourself".

This can come across like (when translated into practice) an abandonment of socialist politics / questioning the fundaments of marxist theory/framing and a push for individualized intersectional 'politics' - where understanding of oppression is formed in isolation and based on our subjective experiences and individual thoughts?

trust no one but yourself is not a particularly good dictum for solidarity and community - for an abilities/need dictum to work you need a lot of trust outside of the self.

It's "trust not even yourself", which is honestly the key to bring the whole thing together.

But I also think we should believe in everyone including ourselves too. Everyone should have opportunity to be heard but no one should be unchallenged.

The solidarity comes once you're listening to the vulnerable with as much or more reverence than you are to their oppressors. The failure of solidarity usually comes from trust in your own worst instincts and trust in the worst people.

Sorry, I'm still trying to figure out the language to explain this. I feel there hasn't been nearly enough thought about what creates people's perspectives and how that should change. It's not as simple as treating them like they're already intellectuals or like they're pawns to intellectuals.

Do you think this site leans more liberal, conservative or left?

Some of the discussions being so anti-capitalist makes me think it leans a bit more left.

But then seeing who has the power to receive concessions and changes, it makes me think it leans more liberal?

But then, the site also had a conservative OT? What was THAT all about?

I can't say for gaming side, but overall it leans socdem, I think. Liberal, but not actually neoliberal. More left than you'd imagine, but not so left that they want literally revolutionary change. I think that's where Millennials in general are (and I'd say this board skews older Millennial-to-Gen X).

Even with all of the conditions that are crushing them, Anglosphere Millennials are still liberals at heart. They like buying things and getting money, or at least the dream of it. They don't have a desire to destroy the market system or eliminate the concept of "jobs". They want better pay and better benefits. They don't really want to establish a dictatorship of the proletariat or something like that, they want Sweden. And that's not a "bad" thing, even if it's insufficient. People have to work within the society they've got.

It's a good starting point for us though.

I agree. Majority are socdem. Though even some self identifying socdems actually advocate for neoliberalism, cus they don't like being called "neoliberal". But yeah, the board denizens are largely on the "softer" side of liberalism (socdem). The forum itself is operated in manner consistent with liberalism as well.

Mostly liberal but it depends on the topic or issue IMO. Sometimes it's more to the left, much less often to the right. Usually whatever consensus is reached is the only "acceptable" opinion too which sucks especially for us leftists. I used to think the forum was more to the left but I'm not so sure anymore.

Also, this is only my second post here (I usually lurk) and I'm trying to avoid the OT forum because it's so frustrating recently. However I've seen a lot of you here fighting the good fight and I just really want to thank you for that. Keep persevering and stay awesome.

More or less my thoughts as well. The fact that it's so broad tent as to include us and "conservatives" should indicate how liberal this place is in total, liberals love their big tents.
