I'm becoming aware that I may be voting Bernie after all.

Warren's biggest weakness is that this country is too damned sexist.

Yeeeeeep. Basically why I'm going to formally introduce myself to this thread.

Comrades, hello. Loooooong overdue participation here. I never poke my head in OT Community and this thread wasn't on my watchlist, so it just didn't exist to me for the entirety of this forum's existence.

Anyways, my heart aligns with socialism but I'd call myself a dem socialist. That's my compromise position at least on this sinking ship you call Western civilization.

I'm not the most prolific poster, especially in community threads, but I hope to join some nice discussions here as we barrel towards the 2020 election.

I think that while the country is too damned sexist (that's inarguable) Warren got caught in a trap of her own making. Bernie never denied that taxes would rise on the middle class. Warren got cute with it and that hurt her.

I'm probably a bit more bullish on Warren than some others here. For me, she represents the minimum level of incrementalism I'd be ok with in 2020. She's more or less a social democrat. That's a left position in the US. I fundamentally disagree with her about capitalism being rehabilitated in any meaningful way, but I think she does have strong beliefs, and she is running for a reason (unlike, say, Buttigieg).

You know, if your perfect candidate is one of them and you're getting the other I think you should consider yourself amazingly lucky.
I have never in my adult life had the chance to even vote for a candidate whose opinions were as close to me as Sander's is to Warren's.

I think a lot of people are going to resort to only posting in this thread as disingenuous bullshit that only riles people up isn't really done anything about.

Oh hey, another data-point in a long list of them showing the utter failures of electoral progress. As always, the street will decide everything.

My only consolation about this century of dread is that the rich who steered us here will be made to suffer and account for it. After that? We have to survive and rebuild.

i see there's people saying its due to corbyn, but in reality any leftist would be considered the anti-christ to the conservative media, the only labor candidate they would accept is someone like blair, in other words a right winger in a leftist party, to maintain the status quo.

Show of hands for sinking the UK into the ocean and making it New Atlantis?

But yeah this is incredibly disappointing. Solidarity with everyone who worked so hard over there to make a change. It's a fucking travesty Corbyn got Corporate Media'd so effectively.

There is literal victim blaming on Corbyn for losing against the most powerful press in the country. Just unfuckingbelievable.

I don't think they'd even accept that anymore tbh. The Murdoch press has taken another massive lurch to the right since the relative soft touch approach they granted Hawke/Keating/Blair/Rudd.

I just hope Labour's left wing platform stays mostly in tact. I cannot really see the membership suddenly going full centrist with the next leader. But the current leadership will need to go regardless...

I mean the real secret of centre left (if we're generous) Anglo-sphere politics is charisma, because it's apparently the only thing that can properly counteract a hostile media narrative and scare campaigns. See: Hawke, Keating, Blair, Clinton, Obama, Tredreau, Arden, Rudd (which I strongly disagree with, but somehow he was incredibly personally popular) compared to the losers. Unfortunately, most didn't/don't use it to do anything of real substance.

Next election i think the scenario is better for labour, brexit Will be done and this was the conservative main selling point, unfortunately uk Will enter a recession, but most likely this Will bomb the tories popularity.
Next step i see happening are Blairities trying to get labour back, with the support of the media, Rowling etc. I Hope they fail, leftists Will have work in the party and internal elections.

The reason they won was because there was never any chance of them doing anything of real substance.

Yes and no. They could've done more within the permissible window of moderate social democracy. Obama, Blair and Rudd especially. Like, Hawke introduced Medicare, our equivalent of the NHS, despite being a neo-lib.

Yeah it's utterly despicable if not wholly expected. And then you have what's going on here:

can't wait for weeks of think pieces what Labour's loss means for the dems and especially Bernie.

I already saw Chris Hayes kind of smarm it up a bit on Twitter with something to the effect of like "oh you can't say Corbyn lost because he ran toward the center." He's already deleted it and has thrown the switch on his concern trolling about the US left.

Well, I had a good cry. I didn't even cry over the Trump election. But it's just getting to me. We cannot get any real left-wingers in power.

We have to figure out a way to mobilize the people besides just the booths.

Very sad that our English friends will soon have to experience deciding between the PPO Silver NHS plan from Blue Cross Blue Shield or the HSA Gold+ NHS plan from Aetna.

I cried when Bill Shorten lost lol. Imagine if one good thing, even a slightly good thing, happened.

I think calling it a compromise position is pretty reasonable and I'm gonna start using that. That's kind of the checkpoint I'm currently hoping for and working towards, but not necessarily my end goal. I'm not picky, though, and I'll support whatever leftist movement is out there and gaining steam provided it isn't full of terrible human beings.

Its just infuriating. When era has blind spots, they are the size of the Sun. How one can be progressive and hate TYT at the same time is a mistery to me. But then again, there is progressivism and there is social progressivism with fiscal conservativism, and ERA is more the latter.

I'm not even a UK citizen, but man, you keep hoping at least someone in western civilization would escape this hell.

2020s are gonna be some shit.

I ignored the thread. Don't feel like I have anything constructive to add to the conversation since I don't know Cenk very well and I'd rather not have to argue in his defense.

This Cenk thread is so embarrassing and disingenuous. What a pessimist view of humanity if people aren't allowed to introspect and change their views when they realize a belief they once held was ignorant.
