Dear diary, today I finally reacted negatively to a Star Wars ship:

Any version of this interaction that doesn't end with *gutstab* "That was for my sister" is wrong and bad

I think there's something to be said about the diversity of power fantasy now. For (male) children, mythological power fantasy is an important vector for popularity. In the 70's, SW really resonated because there weren't that quality of mythological power fantasies on big screen. But now we live in the golden age. Kids can pick the hero of their choice. The same goes for teens and adults.

Jedis are a form of superhero, and kind of the only superhero that exists in the SW universe. Focusing on soldiers and spies is cool, but the SW future needs superheroes to compete on a mass scale, imo.

Agreed, but I'm thinking that between the likes of video games like Fallen Order (assuming it's delivers and warrants sequels), the continued hinting at something pertaining to the Old Republic setting and the like, I don't think there's any real threat of Jedi or whatever name they take next not having their place in continued Star Wars media. It's just a matter of getting that stuff out there, at long last.

Meanwhile, I'm just patiently awaiting when the EU comics, books and games can do more interesting things, once it really becomes "okay" to tell more stories that don't have to involve familiar settings, characters or even taking place in close proximity of the movies' themselves. That's where my favorite bit of story bit of SW storytelling comes from, and I can't wait 'til we can go back there, again.

I've noticed Star Wars threads in Off Topic are slowly but surely becoming more positive and bearable.

So I have the rare opportunity to introduce a 20-something to Star Wars. He's never seen any of the movies and we're gonna watch them all before IX. Really struggling to decide what order to view the movies in.

The spin-offs make release order kind of funky now.

I'd say for a newbie:

IV - V - VI - I - II - III - VII - VIII - IX then throw in Rogue One and Solo after if they are still on board.

I did this a couple years ago and just did the OT and TFA and told them to watch the PT whenever they felt like it.

I had this happen with my boyfriend, who had only seen A New Hope (but he lied and said he's seen the originals) so we skipped to the prequels first so he could "see the new stuff" first and it totally ruined the Luke/Leia being twins twist. He was like "wow, I didn't know they were twins." So, yeah, release order.

I'd recommend release order still but Rogue One makes watching it chronologically much smother.

Whenever I introduce newcomers to Star Wars (which has happened... er, twice; one time it was a girlfriend and the other time a fellow student) I go in this order:

ANH -> ESB -> ROTJ -> TPM -> AOTC -> ROTS -> ROGUE -> TFA -> TLJ.

(Solo wasn't out yet either time.)

It's a kinda strange order but I have my reasons. I don't like starting people off with the prequels because they aren't nearly as good. It might put them off. I watch those with them afterward and then let them know the next film chronologically is (...was) Rogue One and it ties into ANH quite well. Only after all that do I move on to the sequels.

Maybe there are better methods but anecdotally I can tell you that both people are absolutely hooked these days.

Lift their spirits before crushing them, then lift them once more. I can get behind it.

This is exactly what I did with my wife. Seemed to work well enough. Disney era is her favorite mainly due to modern sensibilities and female leads. Of the OT, RotJ was her favorite because she's a woman of great taste.

I know complaining about the prequels is like beating a dead horse, but.....why is the cinematography so bland in them? There are iconic moments and scenes but the Disney era films just trounce them in terms of amazing shots.

I don't really agree. The CGI of the era holds them back a bit (especially AotC where the brand new digital cameras also hurt the film aesthetically) but I think Lucas really puts together some very beautiful shots. Especially in TPM.

My biggest issue with Lucas' shooting style is that he locks the camera down pretty heavily outside of action scenes. So the shot compositions, while beautiful, almost feel more like still photography. Abrams and Johnson (especially Abrams) do a much better job at moving the camera consistently, giving even exposition heavy scenes a sense of energy that is lacking in the prequels.

I am going with this order next time someone asks me:

The Last Jedi > Revenge of the Sith > Caravan of Courage > Solo > Return of the Jedi > Attack of the Clones > The Battle for Endor > Rogue One > The Phantom Menace > The Force Awakens > The Empire Strikes Back > The Holiday Special > R2-D2: Beneath the Dome > A New Hope

That is an afwul list, Cheebo. How is anyone meant to the follow that...

... when you leave out The Clone Wars movie?

Back before TFA came out, I got my sister to watch the OT to get her prepared for TFA and she really enjoyed them but we never watched the PT. I think getting younger people into Star Wars is gonna be harder and harder because it feels more dated every year. Obviously, there are some people who don't care that they're old and will still enjoy the story but there's some people who cannot get over the hardle. Then you have the PT which feel less and more dated in some ways but they're also not as good as the OT.

Which is one of the reasons I think we're getting all of these Star Wars Galaxy Adventure shorts, it's a way to introduce this world to younger kids who might not want to watch the old movies. And it's also one of the reasons I'm really existed to see what D&D and RJ are gonna do soon.

I really hope they release all of the Galaxy of Adventures shorts as like one long supercut. Would be cool to see it all stitched together.

I prefer to put Caravan of Courage between The Empire Strikes Back and The Holiday Special. It puts a little bit more space between the ewok movies which gives viewers more time to mull over their implications. That and I just don't like how The Empire Strikes back flows into The Holiday Special.

Otherwise this is spot-on.

I'm gonna do Memento order next time

VIII I VII II VI III V Solo IV RO

I like this

Do you have any idea how many hours I've lost to Battlefront 2015

Do you play Battlefront II? Play me sometime. My PSN is QuintonChloe.

...assuming you play on PS4...
