Here here. 3 in particular has the best story of the series, but poor graphics and sub-optimal gameplay (so much backtracking, friendly fire on spells, awkward pair-up system, etc.). A face-lift and tweak to the battle system could really propel this game into the top tier of JRPGS.

I replayed it in Japanese for the first time since it originally dropped and, while the gameplay was abysmal as you pointed out, I'm inclined to agree that the story just might be the best overall.

Hell yes. I'll probably buy it physical for all 3 consoles, because why the hell not. Assuming they all get a physical that is.

Not better than 2 no. To me 2 is peak Suikoden.

Because you could use the $ to get different games? Surely you won't be playing it simultaneously on all three systems, but if so, ignore this comment.

I'm a physical collector (Over 6500 physical games) I will only open one of them and play (PS5) and the other two will go into the collection. I might skip the Xbox one in the end but I will 100% be getting the other two.

Huh. Konami really is going all-out on this remaster. Not going to complain. Two games for the price of one, and it isn't overly priced like the Secret of Mana remake from Square-Enix.

... Damn, I actually really can't complain about Konami for once. I feel weird.

imagine not owning a copy of the original north american printing of suikoden 1 complete with the western fantasy jewel case
oh its worse... at one time I DID own a copy, and have subsequently no longer own it. Have a beautiful copy of Suikoden 2, and the four PS2 games... but my shame.

at least I will eventually. This one will come home (maybe two even, switch and PS5...)

Am I alone in not digging the before/after images for the environments? Something about them just feels weird, maybe it's because the character sprites are still the same. That campsite one really messes with me.

So how do we know those aren't just placeholders from that particular store...? Cause those covers are clearly not final as they have no Konami logo or ratings.

I'm also not crazy about some of the remaster's art (the S1 world map footage looks goofy). But then it seems like most remasters struggle with inconsistent art assets or little differences that rub players the wrong way. Gotta take the good with the bad, I guess.

No shame. I only have one because I accidentally stumbled upon it at a mom & pop game store that was closing down.

Can't speak for that person, but for me, I'm highly tempted to buy a PS5 & Switch copy. PS5 because I want to Platinum the two games because I love them both. And then a Switch copy to play on the go!

I mean we all knew this was going to be an incomplete at best product due to the lack of save import forward to suikoden 3/suikogaiden/etc but... I dunno it's just weird!

Were "Gate Rune" and "Dunan Unification" Wars regularly used terms in the original release of these games? I've admittedly never played these games despite always intending to (and at one point owning the physical PS1 discs of both games), but this remaster is the first time I have ever heard those terms.

It's the first time they've been used in the actual titles of the game, but those terms have been used in official media before.

The terms were used for sure in the Old Book Vol 7 in Suikoden 2 and Suikoden 3, which describe the plots of the preceding game , and some quick googling shows me that Caeser Silverburg refers to the wars as the Gate Rune War and the Dunan Unification War at least once in Suikoden 3's dialogue.

"Cover art may be subject to change" that mean this is not final boxart and it is a placeholder.

Right, I just meant if the listing themselves were driven by the retailer with no contact from the distributor. It's happened from time to time where a listing goes up for a physical release that never comes.

Switch's vertical case more suited for that composition, while Xbox & PS wasted much space for the left & right side, in my opinion. 🤷

Konami could've done new art completely for this collection from maybe by Kawano & Ishikawa themselves.

ill buy this, maybe more than once, but mostly because i want them to think remaking the rest would be profitable. i stopped playing after 3 since murayama wasnt involved (as much? at all?) in 4 and 5 and they dont really continue the story, but i might be down to play them if i could do so on the go on switch.

Don't know how new this is, but the ESRB has rated both the HD Remasters, not sure if it's just standard procedure for compilations but they have separate ratings. Which are unsurprisingly the same as the originals.

But at least they're not going to make any major changes to the games at this point if they've submitted them so the release could be getting close.

Suikoden I HD Remaster Gate Rune War - ESRB

Suikoden I HD Remaster Gate Rune War - Everyone 10+ - This is a role-playing game in which players assume the role of fighters trying to defeat an evil emperor.

Suikoden II HD Remaster Dunan Unification War - ESRB

Suikoden II HD Remaster Dunan Unification War - Teen - This is a role-playing game in which players assume the roles of fighters building an army to defeat an evil villain.

Interesting. Maybe they're planning to sell them separately digitally?

Maybe? Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot Camp is rated as a package so it's a bit weird otherwise.
Actually I just took a random look at FFX/X-2 HD and those were rated separately for PS3 and Vita but as a package for PS4, XBO, PC and Switch. Maybe it just depends on how the publisher submits it to the ESRB.

It has been doing very well here when it comes to pre-orders. Would be nice if that's going to indicate remasters of the subsequent titles too.

Anyway, I'm stoked for the games.

I played through Suikoden last year and Suikoden 2 at the moment, and I really don't get the love for them. As RPGs they are pretty rubbish, with a weak and lifeless combat system, no real ability to do anything with characters (in terms of specialisation) and a story that feels exactly the same as the first game.

There is a limited charm in populating your castle, but most characters serve no actual purpose, have no specific dialogue and the castle itself is pretty underused.

What am I missing? Why do people love them? I can't remember what they were up against at original release, but they just feel so basic and, frankly, boring as hell.

I feel the story is great, most characters very interesting with high stake choices with consequences, love the settings, the different kind of battles, the music...
Top 5 rpgs of all time for me.

I'm afraid it's a you problem, and that's fine. Nobody said everyone must love everything.
