Alright, so who's ready for the influx of "HOLY SMOKES DARK SOULS CHARACTER CONFIRMED FOR SMASH"?
Me? I'll personally be supporting Funky Kong.

A port of another game doesn't mean anything for a Smash 4 port.
Dreams are for kids!It doesn't, but us Smash fans are always desperate to keep the dream alive.
I swear, every time I put the idea of a Smash 4 Switch port to rest, something else comes along to pick it back up. That something today is the Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition; if that can get a Switch port, so can Smash!
Anyway, I think this would a good direction to go in.
Doesn't matter how many characters or stages you add, lol. A port is a port.
Disagree. Could be built off the previous game's code entirely with a substantial addition of content, and I would not call that a port. Doesn't matter that it has the same gamefeel as the previous games.
Well, that's the beautiful thing about non-arbitrary terms. It doesn't matter if you agree with it or not, it doesn't matter what you think; the term "port" has a very clear definition. You're just creating a sorites paradox where none exist.
You mean we're not getting Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS + Super Smash Bros for Wii U for the Nintendo Switch?
It's true that Ehoavash has not provided evidence to the Admins that they are in fact in a position to know what they claim to know. Therefore, the admin team can not verify that they are telling the truth.
However, based on what I know about this year, I have no reason to doubt Ehoavash's recent claims. It lines up with what I've personally heard about this year's software lineup.
I wasn't really trying to argue I was just posing a lil question but I guess I was out here making paradoxes by accident
Oki well keep hyper-aggressively putting your foot down on the semantics of video game development and I'll keep thinking that games built off of other game's code aren't always necessarily """""ports""""" under certain sets of circumstances.
I don't know how much stock people put in that old Bamco job listing, but it sounds to me like they're gearing up to call whatever this is "Smash 6," which I do not think they would do if it weren't a sequel but hey I dunno
I don't think Smash Bros will be a straight simple port. They will probably position this as the "Ultimate version of Smash Bros". Anyways, we won't have to wait too long to hear about it.
Nah, I'm just saying you'll hear about it either before or by E3.
I mean, you're talking about a Microsoft character here.

I'm pretty confident that this will not be a straight port, and there will be plenty of new content.
Anyways, I wonder if this is a "Hyrule Warriors" situation where they combine the Wii U + 3DS content together in the Switch version.
Yeah, I'm expecting Smash Bros to have a significant amount of new content. My expectations: New stages, new playable characters, possibly returning characters. Maybe we'll see some stages from the 3DS version recreated in HD.

At the bare minimum, it will at least be around Mario Kart 8 Deluxe levels of new content.
MK8 Deluxe was not exactly a slouch in the content department: All of the Wii U DLC + 7 brand new playable characters + Brand New Battle Mode + Eight Switch exclusive new battle tracks.
No need to even change the artstyle at all, Smash already looks great in HD on Wii U. No sense in redoing all the graphics when there would be minimal improvements in that area going from Wii U to Switch anyway. So Smash 4 was based on Brawl's engine, who's to say Smash 5 isn't based on the same one? Tweak the artstyle, add a few characters, new stages, BAM!, cash money.
Or at least that's how I'd do it.
Why do you think Sakurai's new project isn't Smash Bros.? If that's what he's been working on all along, there would have been plenty of time to add new content. I think that's likely the case, with work on this Switch version of Smash having taken place at a leisurely pace since the DLC for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U wrapped up or even earlier.Sakurai's probably still busy with his new project, and given how hands-on he likes to be, I doubt this'll be a full-on sequel; just an upgraded port he can sign off on.
I know some will think this is crazy talk, but it's actually why I'm wondering if we won't receive any new characters at all. Kinda like MK8 Deluxe if you think about it (new everything except for tracks).
I doubt they'd release an enhanced port with missing characters. The port might even have fewer characters, depending on what their license deal for the third party characters looked like.
If Sakurai is working on this, that would mean he's been working on this one game since fucking 2012 lol. That's like, over half a decade of Smash.
Considering he left HAL to get away from Kirby and his stance on sequels and originality in general, I was thinking Sakurai would eventually want to take a big break from Smash to work on something else, like how he did with Kid Icarus.

Just to add more fuel to the fire...
So I've gone back and forth on this, but with Emily and Ehoavash's comments and the above, I'm convinced we'll be seeing Smash Switch come out later this year.
It'll be the big reveal at E3, and it will launch alongside the online service in September. Book it.

"I can't positively declare there won't be [another Smash Bros. game]," Sakurai said. ""With both Melee and Brawl, I made those games with the thought that there wouldn't be any more sequels. Thus, I really can't deny the chance for another.
"However, as for myself, I don't think there will be."
The reason, it seems, is that just how massive Smash Bros. development has gotten with the current 3DS and Wii U versions. So future titles would take the same amount of effort or more to satisfy players—something that Sakurai likens to "a noose around [my] neck." And even with all that effort, Sakurai thinks there would be unhappy gamers.
"Our intention [with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U] was to provide extra merits to the game which go far beyond the sale price," Sakurai told Game Informer. "In terms of scope, and in terms of sheer number of characters, we went beyond our limits long ago.
"And yet, if we cut the number of fighters or modes in a future game, I'm sure there would be complaints."
Yeah, at most I'd imagine Sakurai providing feedback and direction alongside working with his other project. He was very outspoken about how he didn't want to work with another Smash.

To be fair though I'm certain there are many talented people at Nintendo who could fill his shoes, and the team itself is still there. Sakurai or no Sakurai I'm sure they could add more characters and stages.
